Something the front office has to be thinking about to accommodate the 6 players on the 60 IL and Clevinger returning from the 15 day. Sure maybe new 60 IL candidates ... trades possible ... DFAs likely. Consider before the end of June:
Clevinger will return based on all reports at the end of his 15 days ... likely Wilson optioned.
Baez (60 day) will end his rehab ... likely be optioned ... but need a 40 man move ... Beaty to the 60 day?
Morejon (60 day) will end his rehab ... likely optioned ... but need a 40 man move ... ????
Tatis (60 day) could be activated to the 26 man ... but need both a 26 man and 40 man move ... Alcantara DFA?
then a good chance in July (before the trade deadline):
Pomeranz (60 day) is already throwing ... likely activated to the 26 man requiring both a 26 man and 40 man move ... the 26 man may be the hardest given the limited number of RP with options ... and if they do option someone the 40 man needs another DFA.
Johnson (60 day) and Adams (60 day) both are in the "fuzzy" area of health but reports are not suggesting season ending injury ... so if in late July they are ready to be activated (and neither can be optioned) ... another 26 man / 40 man DFA scenario.
Plus that does not even address Beaty who may also be returning in July / Aug ... although he may be his own DFA but does have an option.
So by the end of July ... best (worst) case scenario is that 6 members of the current 40 man have to be moved and 5 members of the current 26 man roster (4 being pitchers to accommodate Clevinger - Pomeranz - Johnson - Adams). If the Padres are still winning and the pen is effective ... not sure how it will play for the team to option / DFA off the current staff.

A below the radar trade option for SD to look at to improve the OF production could come from PIT, and not Reynolds.
Preller should look at acquiring Ben Gamel. There are a few reasons he could fit well in SD. He is a LHH OFer that can play both LF and RF. He is a FA after the season, and on a modest salary of $1.8M so he should fit in with SD payroll issues. And since he is more a "B" level than a ML star, he shouldnt cost a lot in a prospect package.
He is batting slightly above his career norms, but not enough to be overly concerned with a big drop to his past reality. He has never been a big home run hitter, more doubles and triples over his career, so maybe the "deader" ML ball is playing into his strengths this season, which is leading to his BA and OBP being up over his career norms.

Good call on Gamel … prospect to Pitt should not be very critical price to pay.
Would push a tough call on the 26 man if we assume Alcantara is DFA for Tatis … who goes for Gamel? Gamel is a LHH so maybe logic would lead us to Cano but if the team is winning and Cano is important to the players in the clubhouse … might not be him.
Doubt it is Azocar since he actually can play defense in CF as an alternative to Grisham.
Would that put Voit on the bubble if he does not start to hit? Yes, he has a large contract for 2022 but given his work … a good chance he is non-tendered this winter. (Dead money for 2022).
This scenario will play out no matter who they add to bolster the offense.

I would say that it would have to be Voit. No room on a championship roster for a RHH DH/1B that cant hit his weight or hit more than 1 HR per 40 ABs.
Then you could slide Cano into the DH role.

Also if everyone is healthy come the deadline I can see a re-alocation of $$ or even a big trade for a rental + prospects using Snell (most likely) or Yu (less likely) as a means to ease $$$ current and future in exchange for upgrading position players.. be it on a straight trade or a 3 teamer... something like Reynolds to Pads..Snell to Mets ..specs to Pitt...
Don't forget Castillo RP too... he has been throwing extremely well
I can see a +6/-6 type of 26 man roster moves between now and deadline..with so many P getting healthy ..and a couple positions in need of upgrades....

Since Gamel can play LF/RF/1B and DH … expanded versatility over Voit opening up the DH slot for “resting” players during the hot summer / long consecutive game runs.
Gamel could DH (If Cano’s hitting does not start joy) … when Tatis returns, Kim could get some run at DH/INF sub allowing the INF get DH days. Gamel opens up some DH time for Profar and Myers.
Also, given the thin OF … Gamel would be better insurance against injury to Profar / Myers than anyone in AAA.

Given the crunch created by the 60 day IL types returning … maybe Gamel could be had utilizing someone off the current 40 man (Avila / Tyler / Sullivan) … all are low cost with control which should appeal to PITT.

Once Tatis Jr comes back ...i wouldn't hesitate to bring in a JD Martinez or Josh Bell or Benentendi or yes Gamel ..none will cost much since all are rentals.. obviously the 1st 3 would cost more than Gamel (with JD being my #1 target )...

Martinez, Bell, and Benintendi are all big name splashes that I think multiple teams will be in on, and in that case driving up the cost in prospects.
Plus, Martinez 2022 salary over $19M, Bell 2022 salary is $10M, Benintendi 2022 salary is $8.5M. And except for Benintendi, none of the others can help in the OF.
And the concern with Benintendi is that this season he is way over his career norms, and therefore a bigger possibility of falling off towards his norms. And then his careers norms are not that big enough of an upgrade over Gamel for the $2-3M salary extra that Benintendi will carry.
Plus, with our pitching injuries lingering in everyone's memory from 2021, I don't see Preller depleting the SP to offset salary and risk being short of SP for a playoff run.
