Excellent piece. Obviously there will be reversion to the mean with the bat and the Padres can only hope it holds out long enough for Tatis to come back, allowing Cronenworth to be part of an unconventional lefty-lefty platoon at 1B.

Jay doesn’t mention it, but Hosmer is posting much improved defensive numbers (in a tiny sample). He did lose last sunday’s game on a lazy play, but he’s otherwise passing the eye and stat test so far. 0.8 dWAR is not earth-shattering, but for a player who has NEVER posted positive dWAR it’s a welcome sign. Maybe Melvin got through to him, or he’s pissed about the trade rumors or he’s motivated by the opt-out, but I can’t shake the feeling that he simply cares more this year.

If you want to see a classic example of the 2022 baseball, check out this game-ending fly out to the wall that, I believe, would have been a Grand Slam in 2021 (and before) ... I know I about had a heart attack ... you, too?

Yeah, I thought that ball was gone off the bat. Thats the type of thing that needs to happen in order to have a good season. Take the luck, take the win, and get the series win today!

He aint opting out 3/39 $13 per is more than he will get in the open market... and to be fair right about right for him...

Just would not be that absolute on Hosmer's choice. Yes, he is carrying a lot of baggage with we Padre fans but other teams may not care about what Padre fans think.

If he reverts to his past the odds are low he opts out ... but in the new MLB offensive world Hosmer is sitting #1 in WAR for 1B ... #3 in wRC+ ... #1 in dWAR. If he stays anywhere near the top 10 1B, that $39MM/3 year level will seem possible to top as a FA (or at least match and move to a team that wants him). Then maybe the key factor is that his agent is Scott Boras ... and loves to take players to FA and is usually successful in securing quality deals.

A long season yet to play out but the power hitting 1B are struggling in the new environment and Hosmer (reverting to his old style of line drives) is excelling. Only need one or two teams that embrace the new world order to get Hosmer his money.

Also, we should say IF Hosmer remains a Padre to the end of the season. If the Padres fall out of playoff contention by the trade deadline and Hosmer is still hitting well, would not be surprised to see Preller offload Hosmer before his 10-5 rights kick in.

I still don't get why some of you guys are still trying to get rid of Hosmer.....who are you going to replace him with ?

Trying to justify getting rid of him is nothing more than haters just gonna keep on hating.....find somebody else to blame for all of the woes this team has had and will continue to have

Padres Nearing Deal With Robinson Cano

Worth a shot ... Mets are paying his contract so the Padres would get a "look-see" for league minimum. LHH DH and "emergency 2B".  Some insurance if Voit or Hosmer get injured.

Keep in mind on May 29th the Padres have to add a position player and drop a pitcher to meet the 13/13 league required mix. Cano may be a more useful add than anyone in AAA plus leaves Abrams / Campusano in the everyday development mode in the minors.

Was suspended in 2021 and off to a slow start (something the Padres understand) in 2022 ... but the old man can hit throughout his career ... so maybe just shaking off some rust after being idle since 2020.

If he does not pan out ... release him with no real cost. Side: all reports seem to suggest he is a plus in the clubhouse too.

11:46am: The Padres are likely to finalize a deal with Canó tomorrow, tweets Dennis Lin of the Athletic. San Diego already has a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so they’d only need to make a corresponding 26-man transaction.

Dennis Lin:
Fernando Tatis Jr. grew up minutes from Canó in San Pedro de Macoris. There might not be room for Canó on the roster when Tatis returns from the IL, but the Padres evidently are considering more than on-field factors here.
