2022 Season

Even at league minimum I don’t get this?

We need outfielders that can hit….not 39 year old infielders that can’t.

I’d rather see Mazara or Rooker get a shot.

I think this move tells us a lot about what they see (or don’t see) in Mazara’s work in AAA.  As for Rooker … he can’t even hit in AAA.

I don’t have an issue with this move … basically a no cost look for now at a point when I really don’t see an internal options that are better. Even at 36-37 he had good offensive seasons (2019-20) … he was a pure hitter. Does he knock off the rust and at least be better than the internal options?

Just not the point in the season other teams are dealing any quality OF … so we will have to wait on that. IF Cano is decent he may hang around but if not he becomes at risk when Tatis returns or when Preller makes a trade for an OF. If he really stinks, at risk when (if) Beaty is healthy or Mazara convinces the Padres he is more valuable … both LHH options vs Cano.

Just wanted to give a shout out to Nabil Crismatt.

The Columbian has come in and done a REALLY GOOD job of basically doing "the dirty work" i.e. going 3 or 4 innings if called upon, taking the hill when a starter fails, and just being AVAILABLE( and doing so at a quality level!)

I had no idea who this guy was before we signed him but I've happily become a fan.

I'll happily join you in that shout out. The dude has low key been bullpen MVP since joining the team. The length and quality of his appearances bridging the gap between short starts and the back end of the bullpen, or even just the general eating of innings, has been nothing short of essential.

Dude is a boss and I'm very happy to have him as a part of our squad.

Also, I can't begrudge the team for throwing a dart at Cano. He's probably going to contribute very little on the field, but he's a quality addition to the clubhouse and it's not like we can do much worse than what we already have. Preller has worked himself into quite a tight corner with his roster construction, payroll construction, and prospect capital, and at this point I've somewhat given up hope at any kind of quality offensive addition to the team.

Cano activated

Lamet to EP

Just listen to some negative commentary that basically Kim is not a ML quality player … can’t hit.  Easy target but not a fair analysis.

2022 MLB composite SS stat line: 238/302/360 … 96 wRC+

2022 Kim stat line: 200/326/388 … 113 wRC+ (which would have him as #8 SS if he qualified).

Yes, still a long season and yes, he is not Tatis (few are) but his evaluation should be against his current alternatives … who are collectively worse. Then add in his plus defense and is IS (in the current vintage of baseball) a ML level SS.

Lamet is going to remain with the ML squad for the next few days and work with the pitching coach who will try to get him back on track. At some point he will go to EP and see if anything took.

Looking at the bullpen in the near future, it would not surprise me to see Jose Castillo come up in mid-May and us DFA Alcantara.  I thought about Tyler or Kerr but both still have some potential and it's likely Alcantara can sneak through and, with Cano on board, not as critical to the roster.  I personally would like the rotation to be Clevinger-Snell-Gore to finish out the Philly series and open up in SF with Darvish-Manaea-Musgrove but there are a lot of possibilities.  With pitchers having to go on a 15 day IL and I believe the same amount of time after being optioned to the minors, it limits the moves the parent club can make.  For that reason, Gore may be sent down early and Kerr retained so that the 15 days will lapse sooner rather than later (Of course, Gore could come back earlier if any of the starters are put on the IL).  This might mean we could see Martinez for the last game in Philly, otherwise, we're back to a 5-man and have two "long men" to back up Clevinger and Snell.

I believe we might see Jose Castillo soon, replacing Kerr, as soon as it looks like he can handle the workload.  Baez in early June is another possibility and by that time one of the other relief pitchers may have started to falter.  With Pomeranz and Johnson likely to come back later in June or early July, it seems we will have RP reinforcements when we need them.  I'm not counting on Petit or Kopps until they show more than they have so far.  Lamet is a wildcard, if he remains on the roster and I think Adams is done for the season.  Outside of Gore, not sure we have any other starters who are ready to pitch in the majors who are currently in the minors - Avila, Knehr and Weathers have been inconsistent and Morejon, Lawson and Contreras have a long way to go in their rehab going by their latest outings.  Dark horse might be Scholtens but the rest need more experience.  We need to keep our big guns healthy and we should be competitive all the way to the end of the season.

I know the offense has been coming around; however, I still Preller will chase a bat to help SD even the return of Tatis looming in the next 45± days or so.

On CBS the guy who writes the power rankings basically implied that SD should try and get Josh Bell, 1B/DH type guy, and a FA after the season. I dont see WAS doing much this season, as they are already 12 games under .500.

What would it take to get Bell out of WAS?? Would WAS be interested in Voit, same 1B/DH guy, except for this season, their career numbers in BA, OBP, and OPS+ are very similar, and Voit is under contract for two more years.

So Voit and lotto ticket MiL for Bell?
