What's not to like ...Basically Josh Bell 2.0

He won't be there at #15... he is projected like #7 in most mocks... But if he is... got to take him no?...switch hitters with power are like UNICORNS

Agree probably not going to be there but IF he is projected that good a bat ... have to look at the success of JD Martinez, Schwarber, Castellanos, Bell to know there is a real value a big bat / no field. Actually 3 of those "no field" players are playing a lot in the field ... the bat is that important.

So not out of the question since picking #15 has a selection of options with all with pros and cons.

15. San Diego Padres: Jacob Berry, 3B/OF, LSU

A lot of scouts think Berry is the best pure bat in the college ranks, so while I hear he and Jung are both sliding, I don’t think either goes too far, with this run — the Mets, Padres, Guardians, Phillies — a sort of general floor.

If our Scouts agree this is the guy I’ll be fine with it.

But,I prefer the Uber athletic prospects that can help on the base paths and in the field even when the bat may slump(they all do sans #19).
This year in particular I prefer pitching pitching pitching.

  • With Berry dropping (remember Seth Beer did too the closer the draft got) at one point some had Beer in the top 3 back then...went in the comp rd (or 2nd ) if I remember correctly...

I would be "over the Moon" happy with this draft (top 5 picks) PADRES

1 Jacob Berry DH/1B/RF

2 Jacob Miller RHP (very Peavy like)

3 Jake Bennett LHP

4 Micheal Kennedy LHP 17 yrs old

5  Ben Joyce Mr 105

Joyce will go in top 3 rounds…maybe 2.

I know we always fall back on “take the best player available” but a lot of reporting suggests the real strategy is to get the best draft available and that could be achieved by strategically manipulating over / under slot signings. I guess Berry or one of the injured SP could fill the “under slot” role if not the best player available and under slot per the Padres’ draft board with certainly is different than any of the published listings (it always is).

Although not likely a part of the process … given the high level of athletic prospect talent already in the system and controlled for a long time … might Preller be willing to shift from his past IF the choice among similarly rated talent is “close”?

Clearly Berry adds another debate point if he is there and who else is still there. Risk any choice … is he Seth Beer or Schwarber? Beer slid in the draft and basically faded away. Most were surprised Schwarber went as early as he did given lack of D and he is an All-Star. Flip side, Buddy Reed was the uber-athletic stud … who also dropped in the draft and faded plus a load of uber-athletic early picks that never learned to hit and disappeared into history. No clear winning profile … all in the assessment of the scouts.

If this kid can really hit … in a day and age of struggling to find hitters … might like him.

If he is the next Ty France who cares if he is below avg D or a bit slow a foot right??

CF Jace Grady someone I would want in 4th-5th round ..a bit undersized but switch hitter /high baseball IQ with some developing power *15+ HR ..high OBP/BA type.. with good speed.. we can have a Wood 6-7" and a Grady 5-9" duo in our OF ..i love baseball.. big/small/skinny/muscular/fat/fast/slow it doesn't matter..you can succeed at it

-Jacob Berry is short, slow, bad defensively and has an average arm. Those are the only reasons the Padres may even have a shot at him because his bat is a difference-maker. Yes he would ultimately end up at 1B after Hosmer leaves, but he can spend a year or two in LF\DH. Getting a plus bat with big power in a switch-hitter at 15 is great value.

-Dylan Lesko is an average sized high school RHP who just had Tommy John. Those are the only reasons the Padres may have a shot because he looks like a likely future ACE. Yes we would have to wait several years for him to not only recover from TJ but also because he is just leaving HS. He will take time but the payoff could be huge.

Both of these players have the tools to be special. If we have a chance at either the Padres should run the pick to the podium.

So we can take one of the top 15 players in College or High School and we should run to the podium for a one tool player?

I’m not saying you’re wrong…but counting on one tool to continue to develop for four years and levels without any others to fall back on seem pretty risky “in the first round”.

Especially when our system is mostly without promising pitching.

Obviously I’d prefer a pitcher with 3 promising pitches or a position player with “at least” 3 well above average tools……in the first round.
