2021 Season

PreviousPage 99 of 114Next

Saw a note that Acee spoke to some players "off the record" and those players did not blame Rothchild but blamed the organization for not trading for a starting pitcher at the deadline. WHAT! Talk about not stepping up and taking responsibility.

The front office that has put together one of the highest payrolls in MLB and gutted the farm system to bring in the high profile talent of Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove (and would add Clevinger for last year's push). Apparently they can't remember 4 months ago this team was touted as a NL top team and it is them collectively that are failing.

I can understand the impact of injuries ... less the regression in production by almost all the staff from last year. Now IF these comments came from the offense ... better look in the mirror ... in the last 15 days against some of the worst teams in the NL:

188/220/229 ... Frazier the add who was supposed to be the hitting machine

196/222/275 ... Machado our $30MM team leader and MVP candidate NOT carrying the team when needed

189/318/351 ... Pham the on-base machine at .318?

233/327/419 ... Grisham

If the comments came from the pitchers ... just don't know what to say except they must be in their own worlds and out of touch with reality.

If that's true, we've got the wrong guys in the clubhouse.

And since Preller was the one who put them there......

This is of course if you accept Acee's reporting and does depend a bit on who said what.

I could see a RP (or two) just getting burned out and wanting some up front help to ease their role (they have been good) ... but unless we actually know hard to extrapolate to the entire team.

The entire problem of the 2021 season lies with the SP staff. And the reason for the fall of the SP is what?

Rothschild?

A weird season and a half, because 2020 was shortened?

Injuries, was there a change in the training staff, and something hasnt clicked?

Probably a combination of all 3. SD has changed one already, with dismissing Rothschild. While I dont think it will correct enough this season to help, still could make the WC IMO. I think the next Pitching Coach will determine a lot for 2022. On paper, we should have a rotation to dream about for 2022. Darvish, Clevenger, Snell, Musgrove, Lamet, not to mention Paddack, Weathers, and others. The SP gets back to doing what they should, 6 or 7 innings, and then the bullpen should fall right back into place.

This should be a very desirable position for anyone in MLB.

Might be interesting to see if the Padres go with a younger more “analytics” oriented pitching coach than a 50-60 year old veteran of the “old school”. Rothschild by all accounts was the latter (and part of the reason NYY let him go). Add that the Padres are getting more analytic every year (underlying the critique of Green and Tingler in my mind).

“Younger” may also help the new pitching coach relate to Tingler and some of the coaches … and clearly the young pitching staff.

Another view on why the Padres SP was viewed highly before the season and (if health returns) will be viewed highly going into 2022 .... 3 year ERA (2018-2020) vs 2021:

Clevinger ... 2.91 (out all season TJ)

Snell ........... 2.85 (craters to 4.82)

Lamet ......... 3.11 (mainly injured in 2021)

Paddack ...... 3.74 (plummets to 5.13)

Darvish ....... 3.80 (actually holds at 3.70 but excellent early then fell apart in July before injury)

Musgrove .... 4.23 (better at 3.04 which is aligned with 2020 performance when he came into his own in PITT)

That is SIX SP candidates with historically excellent results ... frustrating to see only Musgrove productive in 2021 and relying on bullpen days and Weathers who had barely pitched above low A ball.

Used a lot of prospect capital to get Snell, Clevinger, Darvish, and Musgrove. Dealt "call-up" options in Quantrill, Patino, and Allen. TJ wipes out Morejon and Baez leaving the minors with prospects not ML ready (e.g. Weathers and Knehr).

2022 with the six ML SP returning and the what may be a very strong AAA cadre of prospects with the returning injured and the more experienced prospects ... Padres SP could swing from painfully bad to outstanding ... the talent is clearly there.

Big game tonight!

Not that our season rides on tonights outcome......but it kind of does. If we go out there, battle, and win, sets us up to do it all again tomorrow night. Lose however.....morally, I think it destroys any hope( not just of catching the Duds but we all know the Reds will not lose another game the rest of the season AND the Phillies and Cards are charging hard)

A loss tonight and we end around .500 this season. A win......then anything is possible!

Go Pads!

Pierce Johnson getting the starting nod tonight. If he can give us 3, preferably leaving us even, I'd be ecstatic.

Now, who comes after him??? Diaz?

Diaz optioned to AAA …. Camarena recalled (maybe to PH against Scherzer?)

Snell is going tomorrow. Thursday could be Camarena but Darvish is throwing a bullpen today … maybe if the work is light and good we see him.

You know you’re in trouble when the Reds even beat the Brewers with Corbin Burnes on the mound.

This season will have come down to our inability to dominate the Rockies and Diamondbacks.
