2021 Season
Quote from Jeremy Hill on August 5, 2021, 10:18 pmHaven't posted in awhile. I think this next set of games could be critical. 13 straight against 3 of the worst teams in the NL. Time to string some wins together and hopefully gain some ground in the divisional race.

With tonights one of the most critical.
We've been win 2,lose 1,win 1,lose 2 for way too long.
We need to win tonight to set the tone(and keep the Reds at bay) and then run off a 4-5 game win streak at some point during this stretch.
But we've had the habit of playing down to our competition which needs to stop.
At least we miss Gallen and Kelly in this series but if I recall correctly Widener has had our number.
I'm not worried about Bumgarner.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 6, 2021, 10:22 pmI stayed up for that?
What is going on with this team?
We can’t beat the D Backs and Rockies…..We win 1 lose 2.
Where is the winning streak to show we still want this?
I thought the Reds May catch us when our schedule gets hard in September….never considered it could be before the middle of August.

Quote from 3fingersplit on August 7, 2021, 9:52 amThat was just ugly......Arizona looked like a team playing for something.....the Padres....not so much as they slowly sink into the West

Quote from TarheelPadre on August 7, 2021, 11:26 amSeems like just a matter of time until the wheels come completely off. It’s a damn shame this season is ending up like it is right now. Can’t wait until Tingler is gone. Preller may be on thin ice as well. He should be quite frankly. In retrospect, upper management may have handcuffed Preller on any deals because they have lost faith in him. Just a thought......

Not Tinger ... Not "upper mangement" ... not sure even if Preller ... but focus should be on the collapse of the SP ... SP that came aboard with "elite" qualifications (and at a high cost in prospects). Nationally that group of Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove were being praised (before the season).
With a stripped minor leagues system and an all time high payroll near the luxury tax threshold I can see management saying "fix" the guys you got since if you don't, we will not win even with one major SP add.
For some reference: going from July, 2021 back to Aug, 2020, ERA for starting pitchers:
Darvish: 7.36 ... 3.07 ... 2.20 ... 2.13 ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, (Cubs) 2.73 ... 1.09
Snell: 6.00 ... 4.66 ... 6.84 ... 3.92 ...................... (TB) 2.66 ... injured
Musgrove: 3.95 ... 3.81 ... 2.84 ... 1.24 ................ (Pitt) 2.16 ... injured
Paddack: 6.33 ... 5.59 ... 3.09 ... 5.40 ................. (SD) 5.51 ... 5.40
Lamet: IL ... 4.43 ... 3.00 ... IL .......................... (SD) 1.76 ... 2.54
Weathers: 6.52 ... 5.54 ... 2.00 ... 0.55 ............... (SD) Minors
End of 2020 and the start of 2021 the SP were delivering as advertised. Then in Jun started to erode and in July just collapsed. (guessing not from pitching too many innings).
Even Musgrove (although still performing effectively) has had a steady increase in his ERA. Weathers (who had a lot of hope for) just lost it.
It is the across the board collapse of the SP that is worrisome and apparently Rothchild has not been able to fix any of them.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 7, 2021, 12:42 pmI think the fact no deals for pitching were completed was up to Preller.
Every other GM knows we traded most of our Farm away the last two years….so they were holding out for one or more of our top four.
The only other factor would be max payroll.
If Preller was not given the go ahead to take on a Scherzer type player without unloading Hoz or Wil and his hands were tied…..which how can we complain about that?
Any Padre fan of any amount of time would understand there has to be a limit and would also have to appreciate the fact Seidler has gone where he has gone with payroll as it is.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2021, 1:01 pmNo question money was an issue but they might have been OK with that "for the right player" and that may have limited the choices to Scherzer and Berrios ... both were dealt for a couple of top prospects each ... and that may have been the bigger roadblock. Spending (money / prospects) on other SP that were not season changing in their view just was not going to play out.
If the current staff (talking about all of them) does not turn it around ... doubt adding even one of Scherzer or Berrios would change the season outcome. Keep in mind that a Scherzer was only a 2 month rental (if he would waive his no trade for SD if he really wanted to go to LA) If the Padres were hot in July and most of the SP were effective ... better chance they would have pushed for a deal to take them over the top. They were not and they did not.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 7, 2021, 1:20 pmDarvish needs to dominate the D Backs tonight or I will officially be worried about him….and the our teams chances this year.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 7, 2021, 4:45 pmAgreed....our SP MUST start to show up.
The O, although not great, has been scoring runs. Our pen has been pretty good too. The D has been sufficient, if not good.
Your right Mr. P, if we don't get it together TODAY, we'll be chasing Cincy, and probably Atlanta, by end of the month.
This season is a HUGE failure without a post season visit. And heads should roll.
