2021 Season

PreviousPage 84 of 114Next

I wish I was a bigger fan of Gallo. One concern is the transition for the AL to the NL … that always seems to take some time for the hitters to adjust. Then Gallo is only controlled through 2022.

Now moving Hosmer is fine dependent on the money going with him … but getting out of the next 4 years seems a plus.

Don’t like moving Hassell but IF I needed Hassell to swing major deal … would have hoped for a more needed add (e.g. SP) under control for a couple of years. Hassell likely would not be a ML factor until 2024 … and by then the Padres likely are in a rebuilding mode with the bulk of this roster gone and little remaining in the system … especially pitching.

Such a deal is all dependent on the Padres winning in 2021-22 … is Gallo enough?

Add Gallo and remove Hosmer and check the OBP/power numbers on our starting 8!

Frazier-2b

Pham-LF

Tatis-SS

Machado-3B

Gallo-RF

Cronenworth-1B

Grisham-CF

Nolatini-C

Maybe Grisham 8th or even 9th with the P 8th?

With Myers improving the bench and starting at 1b or RF against Lefties.

Bench-Myers/Kim/Profar/Caratini

So many scenarios on positions and lineups possible with this group.

Hosmer is 1b only...Gallo is 1b/all 3 OF

And we would have Frazier and Gallo through next season.

Not just Gallo

Gallo + Frazier + an arm.

If we get Gallo I dont expect Scherzer or Berrios but i would think AJ still gets a starter.

Adding Lamet and Strahm to the Pen pretty much strengthens it enough IMO.

Given recent performance … not sure the Padres have a #1 for the wild card play in and at least 3 quality SP to cover the Division playoffs. In the past 30 days:

24.1 innings … Musgrove … 6.29 ERA

27.0 innings … Paddack … 6.33 ERA

19.2 innings … Darvish … 7.32 ERA

15.1 innings … Weathers … 3.52 ERA

14.0 innings … Snell … 3.21 ERA

The plus offense should help the Padres crush the poorer teams they will face in the next month but if you buy into good pitching beats good hitting … could be a problem in the playoffs. Maybe this is the best they can do but dealing your valuable trade chips for short term bats?

I'm not ecstatic about the rotation right now either.

But with this improved offense, esp if Gallo comes aboard,I'd feel pretty good with Darvish/Lamet/Musgrove/Weathers in the Playoffs.

Don't have to hold them to less than 3 if you're scoring 6.

I would think that with the strange last year and a half, that a pound them into submission tactic might work in the playoffs this season.

Then for 2022, we will return Darvish, Musgrove, Snell, Paddack, and Weathers, plus hopefully have a fully recovered Cleavinger and Lamet. Giving that the labor agreement goes well, and guys are back to a more regular offseason and Spring, we should have a very strong rotation and nasty line up with a full year of Frazier and possibly Gallo. LOADED!!!

Have to feel really good about the balance of this season, and even better about next season.

To quote a friend of mine ... watching Snell is worse than getting a root canal ... he has little to no command with any of his pitches 🙁

Coach K on 97.3 says he has heard Gallo and PNL for Hosmer plus money and ROBERT HASSELL JR .  Very torn over this. I really think Hassell is going to be a stud and won't be easy to replace him . That would really shorten the window and make us win now for next 2 years. Best case would be the Cubs, win it all and then garbage 3 years later. Worst case is the Tigers, never winning then garbage . I would be fine with that as long as we end up winning though I hate the thought of be garbage again.

Thoughts ?

Rosenthal reporting Rangers offering Gallo HUGE extension.

Hopefully he takes it.

It would be HUGE to move on from him this week. He just cannot be counted on and NO WAY is he part of ANY post season rotation. And unless they think he can out pitch Pomeranz, Hill, or Strahm from the pen, I'm thinking he doesn't make the post season roster.

Report (not verified) is that the NYY will get Gallo plus a RP. If consummated … it should be interesting to see who goes to Texas
