2021 Season

In another episode of "This ain't Your Daddys Padres", MLBTR is reporting that SD ownership says What Luxury Tax. Sounds like dollars will not be an issue prior to the trade deadline.

Man, what fun it is to be Padre fan right now!

Speculation is that both Nola and Weathers will be added to the active roster during the Miami series (baring a setback).

Stammen out a paternity leave ... Diaz backfilling.

Listen to Jim Bowden (former GM) on the D. Smith show today ... spoke on the trade deadline speculation.

Should note that he had come out with a number of his pure speculation options for the Padres a few days ago ... BIG moves ... a lot of click bait.

In the interview he was much more contained. Couple of comments:

  1. did not think the Padres would deal any of: Gore; Abrams; Campusano; or Hassell
  2. the limited number of likely available SP are not all that great and every contenders needs SP and likely to be costly essentially a pool of bottom of the rotation guys on a contender
  3. Berrios is the exception and be the prime target of most teams if MINN makes available
  4. Hamels would be worth a flyer for some contender but at this stage a #4-5 starter ... velocity down but knows how to pitch
  5. Despite all the "national" speculation that Preller is all in and will go BIG ... he does not really think Preller will. Going back to his time as GM, he would go to the manager and coaches and tell them to "fix them" ... basically got you players that produced and am paying you to get the best out of them ... do it.

As an aside ... fans normally call for the head of the hitting coach when the offense struggles. So, should we not be calling for the head of Rothchild for not getting the best out of Snell and Paddack? Both having their worst seasons in 2021. For those who like to "pile on", can Lamet's injury be linked to how Rothchild handled him? Add that if you look at Musgrove, after his first part of the season his last month has be poor (ERA over 5).

I know his departure from the NYY as pitching coach had mixed sentiment ... a lot of writers did not like his work. Plus Sonny Gray really came out anti-Rothchild. Remember Gray was an elite SP in OAK ... traded to NYY and stunk ... trade to CINN and excelled.

Maybe we have the arms but not the coach?

Strahm (60 day IL) sent out on a rehab assignment ... if all goes well we may see him in August. Roster spot is open after the outright of Humphreys.

Help!

I’m a two hour drive from Atlanta so the game is blacked out.

So I’m about to miss my first game of the season if I can’t find a way to watch it.

Anyone have a link?

Greg Allen is playing RF for the Yankees tonight.

I’m  guessing this hurts our chances of acquiring Joey Gallo.

😉

Had little chance to get Gallo in the first place (price too high and those trade assets need to be directed to pitching ... if anywhere) ... NYY should make the push but Judge is only out due to COVID so just a short term hole. Clint Frazier though has some vertigo issues and that may not be resolved soon.

Have I missed something? What does one have to do with the other?

Greg Allen is not very good.I’’m thinking this increases the Yankees need to get someone…….anyone…….Gallo.

Bowden is usually dead wrong on most of his predictions, so I tend to think just the opposite of whatever he says.

I agree with Rothchild. Didnt like the hiring in the first place.

You're right, Balsley back in the dugout might be the best deadline move that they can make. Go to Balsley with a blank check and have him waiting for the staff in SD when they finish in MIA this weekend.
