2021 Season

PreviousPage 72 of 114Next

Davies (with the remaining part of his contract) should not cost more than a RP prospect ... mid-range from A ball ... since he is a FA after the season.

=========

Gore is now at a new level of debate.

IF the Padres were their pre-2020 selves ... clearly a no trade on Gore with his upside as an elite SP. However,

  1. Gore is now 22 and has demonstrated some flaws over the past two season ... maybe not that slam dunk elite pitcher ... and "elite" is the key ... even if he still develops as a MLSP. His real value sits with the "elite" projection.
  2. The "window" to get to the World Series may be now through 2023 .... after that a lot of pieces have to be replaced ... sounds easy but never is. Are they now in the win now mode and does that eclipse saving a prospect that may not be at peak form for 3 more years (if ever)? Pham / Melancon FA after this season, Musgrove / Myers FA after next season, Darvish / Snell / Lamet / Pomeranz FA after 2023 plus the DH will demand another bat and Cronenworth, Grisham, Weathers, will start getting big bucks in Arb. Like individuals or not ... they got the Padres into contention and that is a lot to rebuild considering the farm system is not stacked and will have to rely on expensive FA.

NOT saying just give any prospect (including Gore) away for less than some measure of fair value ... but saying not untouchable if the return gets them the gold ring. (note we can always debate "fair value" for a prospect vs the chance of winning it all now.)

So, we'd be trading A LOT of years of control on 2 possible contributors,  for 1 year of control for a guy who will most likely demand a A LOT of money after next season?

Not sure Booster. If I'm moving Gore, I'd want A LOT more years of control. And I certainly wouldn't add anything else to the pot.

Our offense HAS TO get hot at some point this year. They're too good to be this blah.

I'm more concerned about getting enough innings out of our starters. Somebody threw out  Zach Davies name- I'd love to have him for the second half. Cubs are most likely sellers as well. Not sure what it would take but I'm sure Preller is enquiring.

I agree with Fenns last post. This is not our cheap Padres any more. Really have no pending need for Marcano (Tatis, Mahcado, Cro, Kim, and others coming Abrams). Both Gibson and Gallo are under control for 2022, so only Kennedy would be leaving after next season. And while I understand your concern about Gore, the national pundits are still excited about Gore, so before he possibly craps out, get value for him.

And if Fenn is right about the cost of Davies, go get him too! Lawson for Davies straight up?

So we could finish with a rota of Darvish, Gibson, Snell, Davies, Weathers/Paddack and maybe Lamet to power through the end of this season and into the playoffs.

Plus, we have Cleavinger coming back for next season. So you could have a starting rota of Darvish, Cleavinger, Gibson, Snell, Lamet, Paddack, and Weathers to choose from for next season.

The timing is right, right now. Go get it done!

Prospects are cool, PARADES ARE COOLER!!

Wouldn't that be great?!

One of the only things missing from America's Finest City resume!

A lot of feeling that Preller (as per usual) is working towards a BIG trade … not just tinkering on the fringe.

Also, even though completion for starting pitching is very high, getting a upper rotation SP seems to be the target. Less so, offense.

Apparently although Weathers’ injury is not season ending … beginning to look like to late August / early September. Lamet is an unknown as to return and reliability as a starter if he returns. Still some to TBD on Darvish / Snell. So … especially for the playoffs … need a strong piece for the upper end of the rotation.

Jose Barrios from MINN? MINN is out of it … Barrios is an innings eater with a very good track record (ERA below 4.00) … under control for 2022 (arbitration) and only about $6MM (prorated down to about $2MM for the rest of this season).

Would cost a couple of upper end prospects … probably at least one SP (Gore or Weathers). Maybe?

Report is that Marcano is in WASH with the team ... likely to be activated and Weathers to the IL.

Then we should be seeing a string of roster moves over the next week:

Snell is scheduled to pitch tomorrow ... maybe O'Grady goes down.

Next Monday or Tuesday targeting Darvish to be activated and my guess is a position player is optioned to get them back to 14 pitchers and 12 position players (Marcano?)

Still leaves a starting slot open for the day Darvish does not go ... Camarena is on the Active Roster and could go or Lamet may be ready and then option Camarena or Norwood?

Nola caught yesterday for the first time ... so he may be ready for a call up next week ... Rivas down?

Don't forget Pomeranz is on the IL and might also be activated.

Oh yea ... maybe a trade to spice up the moves.

Paddack looking very soft again.

Team goes out and gets him 3, he gives it right back up.

Now that we've got another 4, let see if Chris bares down and pitches into the 6th.

Myers slams … 10 - 3 … not shabby to start.

Hopefully Paddack can settle in but at least the full pen is rested and should be able to preserve a 7 run lead.

Note: hour and ten minutes for one inning and a half … going to be hard to stay up for the entire game unless WASH just gives in and speed it up.

Okay, I'm following the game on MLB.com.

It shows Pads up 7-3, then a pitching change as Myers comes to the dish with bases loaded. He hits a slam and the score is only showing  10-3.

What gives????

Cronenworth drives in Tatis, which should now be 12-3?

Good to see Paddack settle in.

It's a bit unnerving though if it's going to take an 8 run cushion to get him in his comfort zone.

Does it make any sense to send him down, somewhere,  to work on his mental approach? Granted, we have no starters left at the major league level but Chris just doesn't seem tough enough to compete, night in, night out.

There was a rarely seen play in the middle of the inning that took a run off the board and created an out. Basically with the bases loaded … a ground ball and Cronenworth interfered with the SS (clearly veered into the fielder going for the ball) …. Cronenworth called out … man on third sent back to third … runner on first to second … hitter on first with fielder’s choice. The TV initially had the run up than had to take it back off.
