2021 Season

The bat yes ... but my concern with Cron (or any hitter limited to 1B) is that with only 12 position players ... having two statues (Hosmer and Cron) really puts a crimp on position player flexibility. Mateo is the likely DFA leaving only Profar and Kim for the OF/INF plus we are not sure the level of catching Nola can handle with his knee brace injury.
If they can land an OF ... Padres can always use Myers to platoon at 1B with Hosmer if not Nola.
Maybe a one stop shop for both a SP and bench/RHH platoon for Hosmer via DET. It would depend on the health of Boyd. A package of Boyd and Schoop could really help SD.

At this point Padres need to look for a more certain add as a SP. Boyd has not pitched for a month with throwing arm issues … no idea of return (and no idea if he will be effective upon return). Still like the Davies idea.
Report is that the Padres come out of the break with Paddack, Musgrove, Darvish, and Snell all back then ? Probably not Weathers for some weeks and still no real forecast on Lamet. Probably Preller has to do a lot of strategic thinking on the health of Weathers and Lamet before committing to a SP add (at least from the mediocre list of reported available names). Has to also consider the rest of the schedule which gives the Padres a lot more off-days than in the first half. Not likely to need 6 starters and potentially could go at times with 4. Given the demand across the league for SP … the one guarantee is they will be over priced.

Schoop is hot and would be a good 1B pairing with Hosmer at 1B and could spell Cronenworth at 2B. I would expect a Mateo DFA to make room. Preller’s debate has to be the future of Nola since he can hit and play 1B/2B but at this point he is NOT doing any work as a catcher in his rehab in EP … knee / knee brace is an issue. His rehab will end this month and if recalled (but can’t catch) will need to keep Rivas and he then replaces Mateo. Basically Nola replaces Schoop plus gives some catching insurance for the future … without giving up a prospect.

I guess there is a lot more ways to look at upgrades considering the names being toss around are not all the “game changing”.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 14, 2021, 11:55 amRather have Davies and Kimbrel.
Then get a 4th outfield type better than Profar and release Mateo.

What do you think it would take to get Kimbrel?
He carries a club option for 2022 ($16MM?) vs a $1-2 MM buyout … plus a vesting clause (but can’t figure out if still viable after the shortened 2020).
Have to think he will be in great demand given his 2021 performance so far and pretty sure some team will want him for 2022 besides the playoff run for this year. Simply put … expect a lot of competition to raise the price.
Cubs may eat some money for better prospect return (they have a lot coming off the books next year). Padres will need a closer next year (Melancon a FA) and are very close to the luxury tax threshold. On the flip side, will any team get full value of Kimbrel next year if their is a work stoppage consider the prospects that have to get moved? Do the Padres have the prospects any more to outbid the LAD, HOU, RED SOX, A’s, and others?
I guess the question is what would the CUBS want … not who we would be willing to trade.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 14, 2021, 3:49 pmNEVER spend big money on a closer!
See Hand, Yates, Melancon.
The league is littered with guys who can get three outs without giving up more than a run or two over an inning.
Spend money on pitchers who can get outs over MULTIPLE innings, like 5 or 6.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2021, 5:31 pmKeep hearing the Gallo rumors heating up. Would take some major trade chips. He is an All-Star who is controlled through 2022 at a bargain cost ($6MM pro-rated for this year and Arb for next). Two months of overlapping Myers probably being fitted in 1B/RF/LF as needed then they make a separate decision for 2022 on re-signing Pham if the DH is in or they could go another way to fill the DH. I would guess the price would come from one of Gore - Abrams - Campusano - Hassell - Weathers plus.
However, why not do one stop shopping IF they are going all in ….. Texas has RHP SP Gibson who is eating up innings and has a low 2 ERA (note that this is way above his history / expectations). Carries a $7.7MM salary for 2022. Adding him might free up a ML SP for the deal … likely Weathers or Paddack based on the other pieces.
BUT WAIT … there is more. Want that RP who has been effective this year … I give you Ian Kennedy who is also in Texas and a FA after the season. Add him in too!
So in the midst of a pennant all in run and the structure to also be in the pennant race in 2022 … how much would you give for all three?

Playoff contenders do not trade current MLB pieces. The Padres will not trade Weathers because they need every pitcher they have this year. Also I would seriously doubt they trade Gore when his value is low. I hope Abrams is not on the market but I don't know for sure anymore.

Quote from fenn68 on July 14, 2021, 7:15 pmI really don’t see Abrams getting dealt … of all the prospects he has moved to my head of the list as a potential “star” at the ML level. Plus with the potential DH next year, Pham a FA after the season and Myers a FA the following year … Padres will need his bat sooner than later. Maybe the Tatis trajectory with 1/2 year in AA, get injured, vault to the ML.
Gore is a difficult one to frame and really hard to know what Preller thinks. His value is lower than it has been (but maybe not to some team) but it is possible that Preller sees flaws (command / blisters) and thinks he is not going to meet early ratings (think Trammell). Add that pitchers are greater injury risk.
Campusano and Hassell are hitters … hitters are hard to find (especially in a catcher) so I would be putting a very very high value on them. Plus with Campusano (defense aside) may be needed sooner than expected since I have had concerns since the dealt for Nola that Nola might not be able to handle the wear and tear of a season catching (plus he is already in his early 30s … never good for a catcher).
After that four … and if they are going for an elite player add … not a lot compelling in the system.

I think I have brought this up in the past. I would be willing to build a deal around Gore and Marcano. Add a couple of additional mid level prospects, and I think it could get done.

Quote from WindsorUK on July 15, 2021, 10:00 amSo, we'd be trading A LOT of years of control on 2 possible contributors, for 1 year of control for a guy who will most likely demand a A LOT of money after next season?
Not sure Booster. If I'm moving Gore, I'd want A LOT more years of control. And I certainly wouldn't add anything else to the pot.
Our offense HAS TO get hot at some point this year. They're too good to be this blah.
I'm more concerned about getting enough innings out of our starters. Somebody threw out Zach Davies name- I'd love to have him for the second half. Cubs are most likely sellers as well. Not sure what it would take but I'm sure Preller is enquiring.
