2021 Season

PreviousPage 66 of 114Next

Well this should be an interesting run to the All-Star break:

1. Snell put on the 10 day IL … Diaz recalled

2. Weathers being recalled on to start tomorrow and someone to be optioned (likely Diaz?)

3. Lamet is on the IL with return TBD.

So a chance we sit with Darvish, Musgrove, Paddack, and Weathers and a SP to be named later! (Or a few bullpen games).

No one really ML ready in the minors (might go with Camarena who is on the 40 man) or we get that emergency trade by Preller … especially if the Lamet situation is really serious.

Perfect timing for Slam Diego to show. Slam. Rain. Win! And save some bullpen. Nice.

Wheeler is a great pitcher.

This one may be tough.

Can Paddack go toe to toe with Wheeler?

Paddack showed well yesterday. I'm glad Tingler left him in to pitch the 7th, and gave him the chance for the 3rd out after the 4 pitch walk.

Now we just need to get Snell past 5.....

When is Hosmer's opt out year? Dude, is giving us nothing.

Myers deal done after....next season? He did so well when left in the 6 hole last year, I hope he gets left there the rest of the season.

I realize Abrams is the only non pitcher almost SD ready but without a bump in production from these 2 guys, I'm thinking he could replace either guy in the lineup, with Cronenworth or Tatis( yeah, I know, don't really want to do it)shifting to cover 1B or RF.

Hosmer can opt out after NEXT season … that will be a coin flip given that Boras is his agent. 2022 he is still at $20MM but then 2023-25 drops to $13MM/yr. Boras has a lot of confidence in getting deals done at levels higher than most expect … so can he swing better than $39MM for Hosmer? (Side note: I think the Padres have the right to trade him before that opt out but after can’t given his 5/10 rights kick in then).

Yes, Myers’ deal ends also after NEXT season … and his $20MM will be off the books.

$40MM between the two off the books (maybe) in 2023 … would expect FA signings for trades for players with money on their contracts.

=====

With Pham (FA after this season), Myers (FA after next season), Hosmer (possible opt out after next season, and the DH likely starting in 2022 … that will put pressure on adding FOUR ML quality bats … two in 2022 and two in 2023. Preller will have to do some work in the FA market and get “multi-year” bats in trades … using limited prospects as trade chips for someone with only one year control will hurt them going forward.

Pretty sure they will try to re-sign Pham (3 year deal?), Abrams will likely fill one spot either starting in 2022 or 2023. Don’t see two more prospects I can rely on being ready for 2023 (Hassell, Angeles maybe but more like 2024).

Then don’t forget money … think their current payroll is near the top of MLB and any costly add puts them over the luxury tax … and not going to naturally drop for 2022 … making a FA signing challenging … so, maybe think trades.

It’s 5-0 Blake….throw strikes!

Mateo should do nothing in batting practice but practice bunting.

He can’t hit….so bunt and use his speed which at this moment is his  only attribute.

I am seeing the end for Mateo coming soon … still betting it is consistent with the activation of Nola.

Mateo’s “speed” is just not a factor since Tingler rarely uses him for that … even in the rare time they are in the 10th. Probably afraid he will have to field or bat later in the game.

From the recovery reports on Nola … they are still cautious about Nola’s ability to catch regularly with his knee … but he is a better hitter than Mateo and can play 2B/1B if needed with less impact on his knee. I bet he might even bunt better than Mateo.

I would be OK with O’Grady until Nola is ready as long as Mateo is moved off the roster.

Don’t think that is possible.

Snell goes 4 shutout innings (but 89 pitches) … still frustrates BUT considering his 10+ ERA on the road this season … a major success for Snell.

Someone I was listening to addressed Snell’s career … his HOME stats are vastly better than AWAY … and his 2nd half stats are vastly better than the 1st half. So I guess some room for hope!

It is the 2nd half … so if the Padres just pitch him in HOME games the rest of the way … maybe?
