There was a lot of "theory" that Grisham lead-off / Tatis 2nd would be ideal to get Tatis' power up with Grisham on base and followed by Machado. Yes not a lot of data but that clearly was not "reality".

Consider wRC+ in 2021 (about equal AB for Tatis):

Batting #1: Tatis (225) v Grisham (157)

Batting #2: Tatis (37) v Grisham (100) ... what took them so long to see the difference?

From a Career perspective:

Batting #1: Tatis (162) v Grisham (110)

Batting #2: Tatis (104) v Grisham (121)

So history shows the Tatis #1 - Grisham #2 produces the superior combined wRC+ .... so why fight it when it is working. Plus Tatis on 1B with no out is a major disruptor for the pitcher and defense.

The last inning was unfortunately indicative of our season to date: bases loaded, no one out, 7 and 8 hitters pop out to 3rd and the pitcher lines to center! Sure would have liked to get 2 more there.

Paddack hasn't pitched or had a side session / bullpen for 10 days ... he has already exceeded my expectations for today going the first two innings with only 31 pitches. Surprised he is out there for the 3rd but he looks fresh throwing hard with uncharacteristic command. Expect him to get pulled as soon as it seems he has run out of gas.

Actually Tatis (R) - Grisham (L) - Machado (R) - Hosmer (L) - Myers (R) - Cronenworth (L) - Pham (R) - Caratini (S) fits that picket fence. When Nola (R) catches sit him at #7 and insert Profar (S) #8 and still the picket fence.

Grisham is a good lead-off hitter ... in part because he works the pitcher in long counts and takes BB so I understand that part. The part of Tatis batting #2 had to be more "theory" that Tatis would flourish sandwiched between Grisham and Machado ... result more offense considering Tatis' power. Actually recall a number of posts on this site suggesting Tatis at #2 / #3. "Theory" sometime does not become "reality"

Actually there is a strategy that has emerged since the rule of a 3 batter minimum ... trying to neutralize those LHP specialists. Line-up: L - R - R - L - R - R - L - R . Idea makes sense IF you have the right batters to fit that model.

I don't know his marching orders starting the game .... but he looked different ... go right after them with the FB seemed to be the formula (velo was up give the "rest").
