Musgrove as a potential innings eater might get the not to preserve the pen.

I like the piggyback Lamet & Weathers idea, but doubt they do so with no Paddack. But once Chris is back, I think they should do this going forward out of the #4 SP spot.
It's Musgrove! This is definitely the right call I think. They will have 2 HEAVY bullpen use days in a row, but hopefully Joe can go 6+ today. Also, the 3 optionable pen arms: Ramirez, Northcraft, & Diaz are all fresh entering today's game. One of them will be optioned for Lamet to return. So it makes more sense to possibly use 1 of those guys heavily today to preserve other pen arms. Hopefully in a big win, but likely to enter also if losing. Whoever pitches today of those 3 almost surely going down tomorrow for Lamet.
Worth mentioning both Northcraft & Miguel Diaz have worked as SP's a lot in the Minors.

I don't think a DFA is going to happen soon; these guys may all be on 40-man through May.
But worth noting that of the 5 "never thought they'd be on the roster" guys: Nabil Crismatt, Neil Ramirez, Aaron Northcraft, James Norwood (minor trade from Cubs no MLB yet), and now Miguel Diaz. The guy I think has the most long term upside by far is Diaz.
He's graduated as a prospect due to all year in MLB when picked in Rule 5, but if ranking him, I'd have him around #30. This includes all the traded out guys, so more like "low 20's" in our remaining current system. Ramirez is "graduated" also, and I would have him unranked. A few late prospect lists had a 6th P: Jordan Humphreys (Waivers from Giants) at the tail end of their lists. He's more of a A+/AA SP prospect. I would put him around #50 (after trades now "#40"), which is where I would also put Crismatt, Northcraft, & Norwood (23 games, 22 IP MLB still qualifies as prospect for me).
Crismatt & Ramirez have extremely marginal stuff by MLB standards; they're at their ceilings. But Crismatt was effective in MLB last year, great ST, and pretty invaluable already so far. Ramirez may stick on roster until Strahm's return. Both guys would be optionable in 2022, which has significant value.
Power arm Norwood already will, and Northcraft & Diaz near certain to be optioned relatively soon would all have no options remaining entering 2022, so would really have to make an impact to stick on Pads roster past this season.
But I still remember Diaz' first MLB appearance with Pads, and his stuff just really jumped off the screen. Knee injuries really set him back, and he obviously got leapfrogged by these other guys selected before him. Wouldn't be surprised if he does get a spot start vs Pirates or later in season.

I believe they need to make a 40 man roster move when Paddack comes off the COVID IL. Apparently because of COVID they did not have to make a move to add Diaz to the 40 man.
Another player to the 60 day IL or a DFA I guess.
Have heard nothing about Altavilla (elbow) or Williams (knee) working back into game form ... so maybe one of them. Did hear the Kela was throwing the other day ... so not likely him.

Not an issue immediately but next winter when they have to return to a 40 man roster ... a lot of 60 day IL that need to be dealt with along with a roster just stacked with players without minor league options in 2022. Not a lot of players becoming FA to make room.
Then consider they need to make ready for an add to replace Pham and maybe an add for DH since not seeing those roles filled with the current mix of prospects. Plus some prospects that need to be added (e.g. Gore).
Padres have a number of fringe players on the roster ... and may see most get the DFA route. MAYBE a factor in any DFA during this season if they look to set-up 2022 with players who can be optioned.

Musgrove going today makes sense ... giving Weathers and Lamet another day (or two) should help them.
So, with Musgrove today and probably Darvish on Wednesday with regular rest, Padres have to fill in Monday / Tuesday with some sequence of Weathers and Lamet. Both Musgrove and Darvish have the capability to go deep into the games (minimizing the pen usage) ... making the pen maybe more available on Monday and Tuesday.
Next Thursday’s off day will be welcome to rest the whole staff.

Again, the logical short term move for Paddack to be activated would be Jorge Ona to 60-day IL. Already > 30 days on IL, and even if he actually is close to full health (no idea), with the late start for Minors he could just go out on a "rehab assignment" very soon. This would allow Ona's playing time / development he desperately needs to not be held back. The small MLB $ & service time accrued is irrelevant next to keeping as many P's as possible on roster until others return to health.
That would keep all on roster safe till end of May, and who knows what will happen by then. Even by then, only Ona, Strahm, & maybe Guerra MIGHT be close to returning; others out for year.
The 3 out of options RP's who on paper were competing for 1-2 last pen spots are all on IL & so far: 7 G /6.2 IP total.
Meanwhile: Crismatt, Ramirez, & Northcraft so far: 12 G / 19.2 IP total so far & likely to increase a lot by end of Pirates series.

I keep forgetting about Ona ... and the Padres don't seem forthcoming on his status. Right elbow not a good injury for hitting or throwing.

Just noticed on the Padres' website ... they have "reclassified" Marcano from "2B" to "RF" on the 40 man roster.
I know they used him a lot in the OF during ST ... and they love his bat ... so is this documentation of a permanent shift? Are they seeing him as a potential replacement of Pham (at least in platoon with Profar) in 2022? At some point edge out O'Grady as a call-up with the ability of INF and OF?
Seems like a very good thing for Marcano's projection to the ML.

I really hope not. Im tired of having OFers with no power. Especially LF. Now if he can really play CF, and Grisham slides over, maybe OK. But we really need some LHH power IMO. And LF/RF is the only place we can really find it.

Best bet he will be developed as “super utility” and will get plugged in as need in both the INF and OF. Maybe gains some power as he matures.
Does not have much of a future with the Padres as an INF with Tatis - Cronenworth at SS-2B for the foreseeable future and Kim as the back-up. Then with Abrams showing up at some position (likely the OF) ... “super utility” for Marcano is the best way to capitalize on what appears to be superior hitting skills. So, needs some major reps in the OF to compliment his INF history.
Agree some power in the corner OF is important ... but in the near term they system does not appear to have someone for 2022.
