Quote from BoosterSD on April 23, 2021, 10:21 pmGame saving catch by Machado. The extra runs in the 9th saved a day for Melancon. Tatis arm has looked solid the last two games. His two hand finish (instead of one hand prior to shoulder) doesnt appear to be sapping his power.
We have taken the first two, so we know have a good chance of taking the series, and at worst, breaking even. Which, after the Brewers series, most would have taken a split......so we are in bonus time for this series IMO.

Quote from WindsorUK on April 24, 2021, 12:45 amNice to see the Jr. at the top of the lineup in back to back games.
If I'm Tingler, Fernando is my lead off hitter from here on out.
Leave Grisham, Manny, and Hosmer at 2,3,4.
Maybe to get Pham untracked, put him at 5 between Hosmer and Myers?
Cronenworth behind Myers worked last year and appears to be working this year as well.
Catcher bats 8.

I think it'll be REALLY interesting to see how this group comes out tonight and tomorrow.
Splitting with the Duds is nice but if you want to knock off the champs, you need to try and pound them every opportunity you get.
I'd love to see our guys with some swagger and go for the jugular this weekend. Sweeping a 4 game series in LA would send a HUGE message.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 24, 2021, 7:35 amYes....winning the first two is YUGE.....but winning tonight or both remaining games would be "Yuger".
That would quiet all those questioning our start and our ability to hang with the Dodgers.
I truly feel the difference in the standings is based on our limited off days(compared to the Duds) and their 7 games with Colorado.

Absolutely right on all comments their MrP.
Its funny you mention the national media sleeping on the Padres pitching. Listening to XM yesterday, Casey Sterns and Spillborough were talking about how they didnt think anyone could hang with the LAD pitching staff, and the first month by SD was making them say "Oooops" we slept on them.

Tatis is a living "catalyst", but I'd love to see the HR with a guy on base! Tough to argue last 2 days R/L all the way through.
But I'd consider flipping Tatis & Grisham vs opposite handed pitching i.e. Grisham leadoff vs RHP.
3: Manny always 4-5: Consider flipping Myers & Hosmer as above: i.e. Myers 4th vs LHP.
6: Jake. Have to work Kim in too vs LHP.
7: Pham can't be any higher than this vs RHP until he actually breaks through. MAYBE 6th vs LHP? Kind of like Profar 8th; maybe when Nola returns
8: Definitely either C. Might put Nola 7th.
So vs RHP: Grisham / Tatis / Manny / Hosmer / Myers / Jake / Profar / C LH: 1, 4, 6, 7, (8)
vs LHP: Tatis / Grisham / Manny / Myers / Hosmer / Pham / Kim (or Jake) / C LH: 2, 5, (7)

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 24, 2021, 10:32 amWhen Nola returns, I would initially split Catching duties 50/50 based on SP:
Caratini catches: Darvish & Musgrove. Nola catches: Snell & "Lamet" (4th SP). Alternate catching 5th SP.
When in a 6-man rotation, probably alternate catching the 5th/6th SP to maintain occasional one C catching 2 days in row.
Once he settles in, could go 60/40 Nola, but I would NOT take Caratini off Darvish (obviously) OR Musgrove.
Eventually I could see Nola playing 60% C, plus occasional starts @ 1B vs LHP, maybe DH. No 2B with Kim & Profar there.
Caratini's "real" usage now is around 75% coming in late in close games Campusano starts; obviously too high - affecting bat.
But Campusano deserves some credit for working well with Weathers in his 2 big starts vs LAD.

Tingler said he expects Nola back for SF (next weekend) and “maybe” for AZ next Tuesday.
May should be a good month to allow Nola to slowly get into full games shape .... split 50/50 with Caratini and numerous off days will allowing him to catch maybe only three games per week.
Hopefully getting into more appropriate competition levels in the minor should re-engage Campusano’s prospect status ... and his ML time (where he was clearly out matched) will become a boost to his development. AAA or AA? No “hurry” with both Nola and Caratini under control for 2021-22-23.
