Quote from Jeremy Hill on April 22, 2021, 8:25 amLooked up some stats from last year to get perspective on where we're at right now. The team started out 11-9 and was in the midst of a 5 game losing streak that dropped them to 11-12. They finished at 37-23. 20 games in Profar was hitting .185 and Manny was hitting .224. They finished at .278 and .304.
As frustrated as we've been with him, Pham has been unlucky and is starting to show signs of life. Fernando is going to be better. Nola should be back soon. We've had more time lost to injury than every other team. It's been frustrating lately, but there's still plenty of time for guys to get going and our luck to change.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 22, 2021, 8:25 amQuote from WindsorUK on April 21, 2021, 2:57 pmSo, I guess Lamet comes back in 2022, his age 30 season?
Although he'll have A LOT of cutting in his arm, he won't have many innings. Pitchers can go well into their 30's. Maybe we sign him to an extremely team friendly deal and he finally stays healthy?
This is armchair QB after the fact, but it's hard to envision any scenario where I would extend/re-sign Clevinger or Lamet with their history of arm issues. They may do a Clevinger-type deal with Lamet; if he does require surgery, he's going to miss most/all of 2022, so likely the low $$ in 2022, higher in 2023.
What I just don't understand is HOW he could build to this point pitching in games up to 70 pitches, then 1st MLB start this happens so quickly. Just seems like if arm was that fragile it would have already happened & the slow buildup would have had issues.

What team expected to contend is this pathetic?
I cant agree more, TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!!!!
8th inning was unbearable. It was 3-0 count on Profar, bases loaded, no outs. % chance of getting from there to no runs is pretty damn low... But Myers' AB was agonizing. He was just straight uppercutting through 92 mph cheeseballs straight down the middle. You could hear it in Mark Grant's voice he couldn't believe he wasn't "just missing"... he couldn't even make contact.
The Pads' overall discipline & patience is working, but have to adjust their approach in these situations & know that the P HAS to come to you. Can't hope to walk or take 2-2 pitch 1/4" off the plate... Gotta recognize & FEEL that the pressure is on the P, not the hitter. I'm having Chase Headley .100 career with RISP choke flashbacks

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 22, 2021, 9:05 amQuote from MrPadre19 on April 21, 2021, 4:59 pmNow we have 4 against the Dodgers in LA.
Anyone expect us to win more than one?
Even one?
I do.... if we are a "100 win" type team... think the projections of every site, writer, etc having LAD #1, us # 2 in all of MLB is a little premature.
It's gut check, big moment time. Need to split the series & not lose any more ground. If we can't with our 4 best SP, and near full health in pen & position players (less Nola), how are we going to be better later in season against them?

THANK YOU Jeremy for providing some perspective! The first 20 games have been an insane emotional roller coaster of expectations, Tatis over-trying/injury/return, injuries, debuts, LAD 1st series, etc, etc...
We all need to take a deep breath & chill a little. Not the ideal start, but LAD were never going to stumble out 8-12... That 1st loss to them in 12 innings was the real killer.
But need to exhale & look like you said at guys #'s getting back to career norms. The hitting with RISP will come, but maybe does need to be an "approach" shift with some guys.
The longer term starker issues IMO are: SP depth/IP available this season & the ability to hit/compete against elite SP.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 22, 2021, 12:06 pmI know my posts were made out of frustration....bases loaded no outs and a 3-0 count(it was Pham btw) I assumed we would "at minimum" tie the game. Then three straight fastballs right down the middle and 1 out.I mean,he got exactly what he should have been expecting and didn't even offer at it!Obviously he was praying for a walk to get the easy RBI and we don't need anyone with that attitude at the plate....ever.
At least Myers and Caratini swung on strike 3.Then to end the game Hosmer swings at ball 4 that would have loaded the bases and it was 2 feet over the strike zone.Just super frustrating game following Lamets exit early.
That's the thing right now.....expectations.
Games like this used to be the norm just a few years ago.Now we don't expect them, nor should we.High payroll..line up full of stars,we shouldn't be having things like this in S.D.

Other “favorites” (or near favorites) in other Division have actually worse starts to the season:
AL East: NYY ... last place ... winning percentage .353
AL Central: MINN ... last place .... winning percentage .353
AL West: HOU ... last place ... winning percentage .412
NL East: WASH ... last place ... winning percentage .438
NL Central: STL ... last place ... winning percentage .444
=====
NL West: SD ... 3rd place ... winning percentage .500

Quote from BoosterSD on April 22, 2021, 1:53 pmJust saw a post on MLBTR, a recap of an Acee tweet. At this time SD is NOT sending Lamet for a MRI. It sounds like an IL stint and day to day for right now.
Did see an article where Tingler was wondering if he was a little "juiced" from real MLB competition and he might have been overthrowing a bit.
Sounds like BS to me; however,...................?????? Who knows at this point.

Basically heard that same speculation from Mark Grant, Mark Sweeney, and a few other ex-MLers. Thought being a pitcher can throw bullpens, sim games, even minor league games ... but when it is the ML the adrenaline kicks in and the effort is just more.
Does makes SOME sense. However, even if that is a valid analysis, the conclusion needs to be the same ... Lamet’s elbow was and is damaged.
Not sure how the Padres could have concluded the thin line between him being healthy and this vulnerability to re-injury was the latter after successful (healthy) outings in AZ.
Not holding by breath that being day to day and resting will have him back in the foreseeable future.
