2021 Season
Quote from fenn68 on April 15, 2021, 1:17 pmPaddack probably did enough to retain the starting role ... 5 innings and only 1 earned run. Still some concern with the 99 pitches in 5 innings and even more focused on the FB ... still minimal with the curve. Not sure what a good hitting team will do with that mix.
More profs for Stammen going 3 innings (again) with no runs. Helps the pen for the LAD series and looks to secure his role as the long man. ERA drops below 3.00.
Also, need to recognize how well Hill has been pitching since opening day when he got nailed for the 2 HR. Since, 7 appearances, 6 innings, no earned runs, only 2 hits / 1 walk. Not getting optioned for Lamet IMO.

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 15, 2021, 2:05 pmJust what Dr. ordered... I'll take a 5-2 road trip against any opponents any time.
Exhale of relief to see Paddack do so much better & not let that 2nd inning get away from him. How much did Marcano's ER increase his pitch count?
That lineup shift worked today at least!

Quote from hoffy51 on April 16, 2021, 6:38 amGlad to see Paddock do much better. Located his fastball and threw a couple of curves. Hope he is headed in the right direction and be an effective number five starter.

Quote from MrPadre19 on April 16, 2021, 7:03 amHe will either pitch better or lose his spot soon.
With Lamet/Gore and others coming soon he could end up in the Pen or alt site either way.
I just hope if he is removed from the rotation its because others are even better and not because he pitches poorly.

Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2021, 10:53 amMLB is at 10% +/- through the season .... clearly a lot can change (will change). Just to lay out some perspective ... in the NL:
Padres are #1 in ERA (2.55) ... LAD are #3 (2.91). Starters: SD #5 (2.58) and LAD #4 (2.49). Relievers: SD #1 (2.53) and LAD #3 (3.78). If you like pitching ... should be happy you are not fans of the teams with ERAs in the 4-6 range.
Hitting surprisingly is better than I thought. Using wRC+ SD #4 (104) while LAD #1 (123). Considering Pham, Tatis, the catchers are struggling ... 4th is surprising.
Defense is ... well ... very bad. Using dWAR SD #14 out of 15 in NL (12 unearned runs). LAD is not all that good either #12 (but only 5 unearned runs).

Quote from BoosterSD on April 19, 2021, 12:42 pmDennis Lin is reporting that Lamet is ready to join the rotation for either Tuesday or Wednesday. We have Musgrove tonight and Paddack scheduled for Tuesday against Burnes. If Lamet is ready, do you push Paddack back and give SD a better chance with Lamet against Burnes?
Or since Lamet could go short since its his first game, do you keep Paddack in place so that Weathers can fill in behind Lamet if needs be with 4 days of rest, coming off his start Friday night?

Quote from fenn68 on April 19, 2021, 1:42 pmI would let Paddack go on his scheduled day (Tuesday).
Since this is Lamet’s first outing ... and pitchers are not a plug and play machines ... cannot expect him to instantly be his 2020 self. Maybe he is ... just hard to go in expecting that. Also, heard the his pitch count will be limited and having Weathers in the wings ... rested ... fits.

Disagree! Would love to see Lamet on regular rest start game 4 vs LAD. Remember team is off the next day. So 1) OK if Dinelson goes "short" that game & "blows" the bullpen. 2) Don't really see why normal rested Lamet would go any less IP than Paddack, who is less dynamic & efficient. 3) Sure he wants to go vs LAD, 4) IF Paddack goes game 3 vs. Milwaukee, he would not go vs LAD, and the weird off days create a situation where he could be optioned for 10 days+ before his next turn came up; he could work on his 3rd/4th pitches, but more importantly Pads could use that roster spot strategically vs LAD... O'Grady to give a full bench/ LH PH or matchup possibility, since already 9 in bullpen counting Weathers?
But the MAIN reason is: If Lamet is NOT going to pitch 2x before the off day, why not just wait (have Weathers go vs Milwaukee) and have Lamet make his 1st start either vs LAD OR after that almost into May? Yes, Weathers (still) does not get used as SP vs Milw, which definitely adds value, but Lamet is either ready to go or not at this point. Tues vs Wed after the long slow buildup really shouldn't matter. The issue is, I'm not sure when he pitches again after the off day if he doesn't go vs. LAD.... Game 1 vs Arizona would be 1 extra day rest, anything else would be really long between starts?

Quote from Brian Connelly on April 19, 2021, 3:15 pmWe need to not let down & win this tough series vs Milwaukee @ Home while they're at less than full strength.
Avisail Garcia is their only regular in the "top 100", and their Bullpen outside of Hader has been pretty bad: 17th or lower in all 6 RP categories. Gotta drive up the SPs' pitch counts & get to that pen.

... the other 6 Regulars including Profar are all in Roster Resource Top 100 by "Power Rank". I posted in Offseason Pads 1 of maybe 2-3 teams in MLB that could conceivably have all 8 of their Regulars (+Nola, Tatis, Pham) be Top 100 players.
Defense skewed single handedly by Tatis there...
