2021 Season

Since Norwood has 2021 as an option year he provides some potential UP/DOWN pen coverage during the season.

From what I can tell .... major FB and good secondary as a baseline BUT really bad control/command. 27 year old. I guess worth the shot to drop him at that alternate site and see if the Padres' coaches can work on improving the control.

A needed "insurance policy" if an extra inning game or something forces a move during the 17 games in 17 days stretch.  Remember if Pads send down a guy with options --when a RP comes off IL-- the guy optioned can't voluntarily be recalled for 10 days; only if there's an injury.  Eventually Pads hand is also going to get forced on DFA either or both Williams & Altavilla, so Norwood protection there too.  Likely a band aid.

What it tells me is Pads didn't have anyone on (M. Thompson) or off (all the other NRI's besides Crismatt) the 40-man roster they thought was better or at least "more ready & dealing" right NOW bullpen option than this guy.  Tough to do a trade this time of year when 40-man rosters are so full & set.  Think sheer # of IL guys & compressed early schedule "forced" it.  Cubs much better chance of winning this one in long run, but Valdez is 25, wasn't picked in Rule 5, and didn't appear in a ST game.

My guess is that the Padres saw him on the waiver wire and knew about his stuff (and saw the potential) and just took the opportunity to get a hands on evaluation. They did have a "free move" with Guerra to the 60 day IL and .... for now ... are not pressed to call-up a RP. If anything with Johnson, Adams, and Altavilla potentially coming off the IL this month ... while the current pen is doing fine (and clearly not overworked) ... Norwood should have a fair amount time to get coached up. Plus with the shuffling ... someone (or two) gets DFA and opens additional slots (Padres may already know the odd men out) for any of the non-roster RP to be activated later if they become a better option.

Probably multiple teams made the claim and the Padres just offered the best return player in Valdez. I suspect his significant issues with control (even though had an option) had some teams shy away from claiming him and offering up anything of value better than Valdez.

There has got to be something wrong with Tatis arm. I know thats a double play, and cant be assumed, and no error, but that would be another throwing error for Tatis.

If there wasn't there is definitely a problem with his non throwing shoulder. He needs to go on IL and get it right. Early reports are shoulder subluxation,  not sure how long recovery will be. Kim doesn't appear ready to take over full time yet. Slide Cronenworth over and play Profar or Mateo at 2nd? Really need Grisham back in center and Pham back in left with Profar. Desperation move ? Bring up Abrams , I don't think he's ready but AJ is known for bold moves.

Given the Padres made the investment on Kim based on extensive scouting of his years in the KBO ... they must like his upside and will give him the first run ... not going to write him off this quickly after ST plus one week mainly on the bench.

Only many were giving Tatis a pass on his slow start because of the pressure from his new contract. Kim should get that same consideration given the pressure from coming to a foreign country (doesn’t speak the language) and adjusting to a new strike zone. If he does not come around ... Cronenworth to SS and work through Profar - Mateo - Marcano at 2B.

Would not consider Abrams before exhausting the other option ... great prospect - appealing ST ... but to soon to rely on his production in a playoff team.

Agree.  Have to give Kim 1st crack at everyday SS.

But I could see this evolving to maybe Jake everyday @ SS and Kim & Marcano timesharing 2B.  Hopefully Fernando can just make it back without surgery now...

OK, it's early for this, but after 1 turn through the rotation, it's hard not to look ahead to the LAD series (despite last night).

I've felt since mid-March Pads might be specifically targeting one of the LAD series for Lamet's return; even if he's on a strict pitch count.   So let's take a look at "lining up" rotation:

Normal rotation up to 4/13:  1, 2, off day, (extra day of rest now:) 3, 4, 5, 1, 2...  this makes 4/14 @ Pirates the logical point to insert Weathers as 6th SP.  But 4/15 is a getaway 1:oo EST game @ Pitt.... before the LAD series.  It's Musgrove's spot... but that would leave Paddack to start game 1 vs LAD.  So how about this:

4/14 @ Pitt:  Weathers (1st start),  4/15 @ Pitt:  Paddack (normal rest)

4/16 vs LAD:  Musgrove (2 extra days rest), 4/17 LAD: Darvish (normal rest), 4/18 LAD: Snell (normal)

4/19 vs Mil: Morejon (3 extra days rest; BP use?), 4/20 Mil: Weathers (+1), 4/21 Mil:  Paddack (+1)

4/22 @ LAD: Musgrove (+1), 4/23 @ LAD: 4/23 @ LAD: Darvish (+1), 4/24 @ LAD: Snell (+1), 4/25: Lamet/Morejon?

Once Weathers (or Paddack?) is "burned" making his 2nd start, that would be the logical time for him to go down for a RP for the 1st 3 games @ LAD until that last game hopefully gives most of the pen 2 days off.  I like that Weathers & Paddack go back to back vs the same 2 teams.  Helps Pads evaluate who should stay in a 5-man rotation with Lamet back.

My feeling is that even though it's early in season & may have just taken a huge hit to our chances, Pads spent big $ & prospect capital to get these big 3 SP:  put them against the champs these early series & see how we do!

We really miss Grisham, HR with an assist from Mateo. Hit off the heel of glove, miss timed his jump. Now we need 3 at least, might be tough with the way they are hitting with men on base.

Yeah, Mateo sure doesn't look the part. That was brutal.

Time for the O to finally put some hits together and push across some runs.

Is it just me or have we had like 15 fly balls caught at the warning track the last four games?
