Nola to IL … surgery on hand

Rivas activated

========

side: Nola is a good catcher when he is healthy but injured way too often. That profile may cause the Padres NOT to trade Campusano … Caratini and Rivas (if he remains) would be a weak set in 2022 when Nola goes down.

Always thought Nola was a bit too small (slight) for a lead catcher … maybe 3 catchers with the DH in place can “protect” Nola a bit.

It’s game 156.

Today is the first game I haven’t seen even one pitch.

I think it’s the first game in 5 years I haven’t seen at least one pitch of a Padre game.

Should I watch some to keep the streak alive or……..?

Its the last game of the season at home, and its a close game, of course you should watch some.

You'll get to enjoy watching Fernando Tatis Jr. sitting on the bench( obviously resting him up for later in the year.....)

Cronenworth having a good day at the plate though.

Bit surprised they are sitting Tatis today.

Yes, he had a bad game yesterday (offensively and defensively) and, really did not look his “upbeat” self … sort of forced emotion (what ever the reason)

However, Padres are out of contention … it is the last game at home for the season … it is a sellout crowd … fans want to see Tatis so why not give them something and play him?

Well, the 9th inning was pretty reflective of the second half of the season.

I must be a glutton for punishment but actually watched the post game presser.

Nothing important about the game / season / players BUT actually learned something I did not know:

The “box” we see on TV to evaluate whether the pitch is a ball or strike IS NOT the same as the one MLB uses … so something to consider. (Also, never knew MLB had a ball / strike monitoring systems in place … I guess to evaluate umpires). By definition, the one MLB uses is correct.

When the automated strike zone is implemented (sooner the better) … they will use a MLB approved system … and hopefully that feed will also be made available to the broadcasts … or since it is what it is … maybe the “box” on TV just becomes a thing of the past.

I read a couple of years ago that umpires were given feedback about balls and strikes called incorrectly, but not all of them were taking it seriously, maybe that is why there hasnt been any improvement in the past years, it appears they are even worse now

I told you all this years ago. The man that used to run my umpire association was also the man that operated the ball strike video system at the Bob here in AZ.

And according to him, most MLB umps missed about 3-7 pitches per game.
