As a kid, it seems like everyone had a flashy CF. I guess most back then( like SS) they were just there for D. Today, different story.
It has been a growing issue for a few years now ... but these things for some reason go in cycles. I recall when SS who could hit / field were scarce and when 3B who could hit / field were scarce ... now not so much. CF has that same dynamic of needing a plus fielder who can hit and I guess if one does not develop teams just mix and match their CF options through the season.
Makes Grisham a better piece of the puzzle than many might think ... he is actually a CF who can field and hit ... maybe not hit to the Trout level but hit better than most CF. Plus he seems to stay relatively healthy.
Grisham should be around for 4 additional seasons but Hassell is coming (not really sure on his CF defense ... but can hit) and, depending on other moves, Abrams has the potential for a elite hitting / defensive CF. So, Padres may have a critical CF covered better than most for a long time. (left out Tatis who if not back to SS may be a fixture in RF).

Grisham is actually my choice to break out next season.
If he can stay healthy(I know) and play 150+ games I expect at least a .275/.350/.450 with a 20/20 season and another Gold Glove.

So let's take some positives from todays game.
- We won the series. Positive.
- Lamet returned, 1 IP and 3 SO. Positive.
- Weathers 1 IP and no runs given up. Positive.
- The Reds lost the first game of a DH. Positive.
So a decent day while suffering a loss.

Arrietta gives us a quality start, the O battles back to tie it......just to let Pagan come in and blow it......ugh....
Stammen looked efficient- no reason for him not to continue( unless of course he got pinch hit for?)
In game management is going to be a factor down the stretch. Hope Tingler's up to the challenge.

My boy Jake the Rake strikes again.....love this guy
I just wish more people would get engaged and talk Padres.....I know this is a forum that is all about the minors but this last four weeks is going to be intense.....every game means something and scoreboard watching will be a big part of it
Paddack threw a good game with the exception of two pitches and Joe Musgrove has been the Padres most consistent starter the entire year....if Snell can get in a good groove and pitch the way he has his last 2 or 3 outings and Darvish can find his command again with Arrieta maybe being able to eat up some innings.....and the offense gets more dialed in then this should be fun
Go Padres !!!
BTW....put Tatis back at SS.....this team needs his energy because being in RF takes away from that overall vibe he brings....just sayin

Three months ago, I was excited to see how far this team could go in the playoffs. As the losses mounted, I became agitated at the prospect of not making the playoffs with the largest payroll the Padres have ever had.
We went from having the third best record in baseball and having to play the dreaded Dodgers versus now where we are barely over .500 and could end up playing the Giants in the play-in game instead.
Which do we prefer…..one game against the Dodgers and a series with the Giants or one game against the Giants and a series with the Dodgers?We may want the one game against the Dodgers and see what happens.
In the meantime, go get some wins and hope for some Reds losses!!

At this point all that matters is getting into that Wildcard game.
With our schedule and the Reds it will take winning every series here on out.
A huge task to say the least.
