We could have drafted a top 30 player and still got this kid with our next pick.

But because of the slot $ rules it becomes a game of  “who can you sign” instead of just selecting the best players.

Super frustrating….because we are missing out on a top 30 player to add to a depleted farm system.

Who would you have taken?  What's your definition of "a top 30 player"?

The analysts said that the Yankees had their eye on Merrill and so would NOT have been available with next pick ...

I was hoping for McGreevy or Chandler.

Then again I also wanted pitching…..

Jaden Hill was another I was looking at...ended up going #44.

College arm....which was my preference.

Please understand I'm not saying I know anything about these guys....I do trust Preller.I just hate the system that you have to play around with the funds available .....you have to convince guys to sign for much less than the slot value cause they weren't ranked that high etc....

Save some here to spend more there.....Just let them take who they want and work out a contract.

Or like the NFL assign certain value to the picks and only the wording of the deals and incidentals need to be worked out.

Don't want to pay a guy slot?

Don't draft him.

REALLY want a guy?

Take him higher and pay him more....

OK, Padres at #62 pick HS OF James Woods (ranked #44) ... LHH. Big guy 6'7" / 240 with raw power. (sort of like Mears last year in the 2nd round). Another high upside pick. Believe it or not he is a CF in HS ... so I guess potential to be a very good defensive corner OF.

Like the size/strength/athleticism combo on this kid.

Always like taking C/SS/CF cause those are the guys you can always move if they struggle defensively or end up blocked.

You can move Catchers to 1b or even 3b(sometimes),Shortstops to 2b or OF and Centerfielders to the corners.

You don't usually move guys "to" those positions.

Note on Woods ... he was in HS in Maryland (two sport star also in basketball) before moving to FLA for this season. Wasn't Merrill also from Maryland?

Jaden Hill went to the Rockies by the way.

I have always wondered why 75% of their picks weren't pitchers?

You can always trade for or sign bats in free agency to play in Denver.

How soon do we get these kids signed and playing in Arizona?

at #71 Padres select LHP Robert Gasser (ranked #88) out of Houston U. ... so Padres get college lefty pitcher.

Have to sign by Aug 1 ... but I would expect most to sign very quickly and end up in AZ sometime next week.

Bubba Chandler just went to the Pirates at the top of round 3.

Was 21st ranked.

If they can sign him and Solometo and Davis......that's quite a haul in 3 rounds!
