From today's DFR ...
Speaking of rising up the prospect boards, Robert Gasser has an outside chance to be the top pitching prospect in the organization when MacKenzie Gore graduates. Gasser, who like Lawson, was drafted with the 71st overall pick, had his second consecutive good outing, after a horrific opening day. While his 3.97 ERA is still inflated because of the opening start, he is averaging 13.5 K/9 innings which would be top-five in the Midwest League among starters. Gasser has seen his fastball play up thanks to above-average movement. He topped out at 95 mph, but his movement makes it a nightmare for hitters. His slider has also shown signs of being a devastating pitch, but High-A it is about learning control and being able to throw everything for a strike.

Quote from Randy Manese on April 22, 2022, 11:40 amThe 2021 draft turning out to be a solid one as 4/5ths of the starting rotation in Ft. Wayne are from that draft and the #1 starter in Lake Elsinore, Hawkins, was also drafted in 2021. Because they were all college pitchers there is some expectation that they will do well at their current levels. The true test will be in AA.
Merrill, Wood and Ferguson make the Lake Elsinore team very exciting to watch and worth the trip up the 15 to see the Storm.

A combo of a 24 year old 6 year college senior and just a 90 MPH FB probably just does not resonate with the scouts who contribute to rankings. Does not mean he will not be effective and make the ML but probably not with the "upside" those ranking like.

Kevin Kopps yielded a pair of the walks after coming on to preserve a 6-6 tie. The righty has now walked nine of the 42 batters he’s faced in 10 innings of work, contributing to a 6.30 ERA even though he’s held opponents to a .125 average. Opponents have been effective in waiting out his slider, which he’ll have to use in the zone more effectively.

The big story was another stellar pitching performance by Robert Gasser. The lefty’s 10 strikeouts were one off of his season-high of 11. In his last six starts, he has given up six earned runs, and in four of the outings he hasn’t given up a run. In his last two starts, he has 15 strikeouts in 12 innings against four walks and has given up a pair of runs.
James Wood, 19, has now played 35 games in the Cal League with 167 plate appearances with a slash line of .321/.437/.562 with 11 steals in 14 attempts and has struck out 28 times against 26 walks.

“In terms of Gasser, this is, in our opinion, quietly one of the better pitching prospects in baseball right now. He was one of the targets of ours out of Houston in the Draft. The Padres did a great job selecting him, have done a great job with his development the first year or so of his professional career, and we’re really excited to get him into our organization.”
