2021 In Season Trade Ideas

If this season has taught us anything(and the Dodgers) it's that you really can't have enough starting pitching.

That being said...if we get a guy(like Berrios) controllable past this season....what do we do next season with all these Starters.

If we "assume" they are all healthy to start next season, what do we do with eight Starters?

Darvish/Berrios/Lamet/Clevinger/Musgrove/Snell/Paddack/Weathers.....and this doesn't factor in Gore yet.

I guess in this scenario Weathers and Paddack are in the Pen....but what about Snell?

Maybe Clev is stashed on the il to start the season regardless of health in case of injury?

Does AJ trade one(or two) in the offseason?

If so.....who and what for?

Good problem to have, again, but something to think about.

Well we thought that 2021 should start with an "excess" of quality SP and 4 months later we are scrambling for SP ... go in with "excess".

Darvish - Snell - Musgrove - Lamet - Paddack - Clevinger - Weathers ... add Berrios ... and consider in waiting Gore. Pretty sure Preller could move one of those (or more) ... maybe for a useful bat for 2022. Might cover the hole if there is a DH and they don't resign Pham ... no one coming in-house.

Could see Weathers, Clevinger, and Paddack getting bullpen roles to start 2022 and Gore in AAA if no trade and until injuries decimate that staff. One might flip with Lamet (depends on his health). Pen loses Melancon ... could decline options on Johnson and Stammen ...

======

Since, in my mind, 2021-22 are their best shot ... need to push the envelope.

FA after:

2021: Pham, Melancon ... *** Scherzer *** if added

2022: Musgrove, Clevinger, Myers, Hosmer (?), Strahm, Stammen, Johnson, Frazier ... *** Berrios *** if added

2023: Darvish, Snell, Lamet, Profar, Caratini

That is a LOT going with little in the system near term to back fill (or trade for immediate impact players). I can see "excess" pitching being moved in ST, maybe trade deadline, and then the following winter to reboot.

The latest on MLBTR is that the Padres are most diligent trying to get Berrios.

Send Hosmer, Myers, Gore, Hassel, and Campusano and SD gets Berrios and Buxton.

Buxton takes over CF, Grisham slides RF, Crone takes 1B, and Frazier takes 2B.

Sources are saying Padres are close to Scherzer deal.  That would be very nice!

According to Bleacher Report the Padres are "Close to acquiring Max Scherzer"!

Somebody must have drove the price of Berrios up to the hyperludicrous level. Maybe TOR?

Anxious about what the cost is gonna be.

I'm thinking it will cost one of Paddack or Weathers +....for 8 starts I just don't know.

But,we're going for it so why stop now?

This is why I would be leery of trading Paddack/Lamet/Weathers/Gore either now.......or next off season.

We are going to need those young guys in a couple years....don't really have much else close in the system.

While some salary relief may enable signing FA starters others salaries will go up too.

A difficult juggling of winning now and their desire to remain a contender year after year.

The return to WASH (and the amount of money the Padres take on) is going to be fascinating. (and I probably will be unhappy at some level).

No insight but I would not be surprised if Weathers was in the deal and worry about the future in the future.

I will throw in a pure speculation wrinkle ... since Boras is the agent (and is creative) and Boras and Preller seem to work well together ... is it at all possible that part of the current negotiation to waive the no trade ends up being a new extended contract for Scherzer ... maybe long (past use by date) but lower AAV. Scherzer / Boras have had little issue with deferred money (see his current deal). Think Bobby Bonilla.

Hopefully….but why would Scherzer(or Boras) want an extension now when he could have 8-10 other teams fighting over him in the offseason?

Especially when other West Coast teams would be involved.

Only way an extension now would help him is if he gets hurt before October…..yikes that would suck.
