2021 In Season Trade Ideas
Quote from fenn68 on July 30, 2021, 9:44 amAnother one bites the dust:
The Blue Jays and Twins have a deal in place sending right-hander Jose Berrios to Toronto, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link). MLB.com’s Jon Morosi reports that top pitching prospect Simeon Woods-Richardson is part of the return. Infielder Austin Martin, the No. 5 overall pick from last summer’s draft, is also going to Minnesota, reports Dan Hayes of The Athletic.

Martin is MLB #16, INF/OF pretty close to ML in AA at 22
Woods-Richardson is MLB #68 in AA at 20

Quote from BoosterSD on July 30, 2021, 10:15 amSounds like it would have been Gore and Abrams or Hassel to get Berrios. Probably too pricey for a 1.3 seasons of Berrios.

Quote from BoosterSD on July 30, 2021, 10:16 amI would guess that maybe something gets done with TEX for Gibson and maybe Kennedy? Cant see Preller getting shut out for a SP.

That sounds about right assuming MINN was not put off by Gore's lack of production ... which they could very well be. If they would not take Gore ... more difficult with maybe Weathers being the demand or if they would skip an arm ... Campusano and Hassell? Pretty steep price for the Padres.

Quote from MrPadre19 on July 30, 2021, 10:32 amI already see Padre "fans" going off on Twitter about Preller getting "shut out".
They don't care who we give up...only care about doing "something".
But they would be the same ones 3 years from now complaining cause Hassell or Abrams are All Stars for another team.
It's a no win deal for AJ.
I hope he gets something done...esp. now after what the Dodgers did.
But we don't have a whole lot after the top 4 prospects any more...I don't want to lose them if possible.

I guess Gibson is now in the mix ... not sure of any other SP if you believe COLO that not dealing Gray and reports that MINN is asking way too much for Maeda. After that ??? Maybe MINN Pineda as an innings eater.
Hard to see them add Kennedy after Hudson ... with Lamet and Strahm coming back soon .... and few arms with minor league options. Those three probably will send out Crismatt ... DFA Mateo (as they move back to 14 arms) ... and a IL to be named later (Adams?). Unless they move a 26 man roster arm in the deal.
Actually hard to see who they move if they added a SP only. Paddack and Snell have minor league options but that is unlikely. Maybe a "rolling IL" works except don't want at this point in the season to not go with the best five every rotation.

Preller (and his staff) seem to have the approach of putting a max value for any acquisition target before even entering the negotiation ... once they reach the max offer they don't get pressured into topping better offers and move on. They have their internal valuations of their own prospects.
Basically a strong discipline to their process.

I get what you are saying Mr. P, and dont make a deal just to make a deal. However, you and I have been on this site for a long time now. And how many times have rested our hope on this prospect or that prospect and having a winning team, someday in the future. I am not saying that Abrams, Gore, or Hassel wont pan out. Or that they are even the same prospects as Decker and Kulbacki! However, the iron is hot for our current ML team.
I am not saying sell the entire farm for one season, thats for sure. But we finally have a REAL ML Team, and I for one am enjoying that. And if we can make smart deals, I will always quote Casey Stein from MLB on XM.....
Prospects are cool, Parades are cooler!
And I want to buy you a beer after a World Series parade through downtown SD!

If they added lets say Gibson and Kennedy, they could send down both Paddack and Weathers. For Paddack to work on items and Weathers to control innings, as he will max out for this season sometime.
Could then see Lamet being used as an opener per se, lets say 1-3 innings. And then Strahm comes in for another 1-2 innings.
Rotation could be Darvish, Musgrove, Gibson, Lamet/Strahm, Snell. Leaving the back end to a combo of Pagan, Pomeranz, Kennedy, Hudson, and Melancon. Thats 11 pitchers, and could still have Hill, Adams, one more. Then you could bring a better Paddack and rested Weathers back in September for a strong division push.
