Mateos speed doesn’t help if he’s never on base and surely he isn’t here just to pinch run occasionally.

 

He is charge of the “swag chain”.

My guess is that they see that last spot on the bench as an insurance policy for in-game / non-IL injuries. So, never play to use him … Kim first up for the INF / Profar first up for the OF if a starter is rested / non-10 IL.

So, Mateo does little playing but could fill in the INF or OF given the “short” bench.

Meanwhile, the next-up if an IL injury is getting ABs in the minors. If an OF (O’Grady) … if an INF (Castillo).

Side: would not be surprised that around the trade deadline the Padres pick up a more impactful bench piece to supplant Mateo … or if Marcano continues to crush AAA pitching they recall him since he is being worked both INF/OF.

Except the guy who made last out starts at 2b.

Guess they could pinch run for him but you lose 2 off the bench that way  if Mateo can’t also field that position(1b,C,3b etc).
