2021 In season Roster Moves

PreviousPage 8 of 17Next

If they put him on the market there should be a lot of competition with some team throwing in a premium prospect .... so not like Padres could land Scherzer with a bundle of low level prospects.

I will go with the idea that Preller will not move Abrams, Hassell, or Gore ... so need to start from there.

I wonder about dangling Campusano (Top 100 prospect) ... Washington has a need at catcher now and in the future (a very hard position to get quality) ... Padres appear happy with Nola (FA after 2025) and Caratini (FA after 2023). Plus would not be surprised if they entertain a Caratini extension (only 30 when hits FA).

Washington will need “a lot” in 2022 since about half their ML roster becomes FA which is why they will push for ML/ML ready talent in the return.

==========

Do you think they would bite on Paddack (3 more years) or Snell (2 more years)?

Listened to an interesting discussion on trade deadline moves. Basic thought was that “rentals’ are now cheaper (in terms of talent needed to acquire someone) with most clubs now valuing quality prospects even more than in the past.

The discussion still suggested from both he buyers and sellers standpoints … to get fair value … deals will not really happen to late July. However, still may see some early with quite a few teams realistically out of playoff contention already and, at least in the AL, a still tight run for teams in contention.

I wonder how the specter of a work stoppage to begin 2022 will impact any deadline deals of players with control in 2022 (same for winter deals).

Teams may not want to pay full value based on a full season and only get a partial season … one that may look more like 2020 than 2021.

That may also factor into teams NOT adding some non-roster types if they don’t have to … since if there is a work stoppage with the MLBPA the minors will still operate with all the players not part of the MLBPA. Really a fringe thought but may be a big future plus to avoid a “look/see” in 2021 of someone like Abrams that could cost him development time in early 2022.

Taylor Williams moved to the 60 day IL to make room of Sam McWilliams claimed off waivers from the METS.

A 25 year old RHP who has not broken into a ML game. Sort of a AAA filler gamble for now (has 3 option years) for call-up / down as needed.

Was a decent prospect as he moved through A / A+ / AA with a good FB … not shown much in AAA. We will see.

Apparently this guy has already been placed on our list of top 20 prospects - between 17 and 19 depending on the publication.  I’m thinking that our farm is very thin.

That surprised me … even with the thinner Padre system.

Did some additional reading and I guess the Padres see him following the Thompson route and convert to the pen with a high 90s FB and a good slider. Was a starter for most of his career. Major control issue that has to be harnessed.

I would guess the ranking comes from his velocity and his success in AA and below from a few years back. Still bounced around a few organizations and was a Rule 5 pick (returned) at one point. So a long shot but worth taking considering the AAA pen is Thompson - Norwood - Northcraft - Ramirez of the 40 man roster types.

Padres’ system is in an interesting position, a number of quality prospects then a big drop off of full season types due to the trades. What we can’t really assess it the quality of talent Preller has added in the Rookie / short season levels … and some of the under the radar Latin players popping up in low A. Someone like Angeles at LE is pretty much an unknown to most doing rankings … think youngest in his league … and hitting well.

So talent may be there just not yet showcased enough to merit ranking.

Grisham activated ... O'Grady optioned.

Side thought on the optioning of Weathers to AAA … good chance he stays down long enough getting stretched out while controlling innings and the Padres pick up an extra year of control … 6 years starting in 2022?

Johnson to 10 day IL (right tricep inflammation)

LHP Camarena’ contract purchased from El Paso and activated. (Local kid) … was starting for EP … so a long relief option behind Diaz who is starting tonight.

McWilliams … LHRP just claimed off waivers by the Padres has been outrighted to AAA.

I want to see Nick Ramirez hit 🙂

From a recent DFR (Nick's last AAA appearance prior to recall this weekend) ...

LHP Nick Ramirez entered in the middle innings and allowed just one hit and a walk in three innings. Ramirez, 31, has had four separate stints in the big leagues this season in part for his ability to work multiple innings out of the bullpen. In 19 innings with El Paso, Ramirez has a sparkling 0.92 ERA with 20 strikeouts and just four walks. Ramirez was converted to a pitcher in 2017 while a member of the Brewers’ organization. He has 96 career minor league home runs.
