I did see one reporter speculate Frazier the regular 2B and Cronenworth to 1B but unless they trade Hosmer (that would be a real challenge) ... more likely we see some Frazier in both corner OF to spell Pham / Myers along with the Hosmer plan.

Of course in the next 5 days ... more bodies can come and go ... so we will see.

Control for 2022 has the value of "covering" the FA of Pham after the season (hard to say if he will be re-signed) but if he is and the DH arrives .. that too is covered.

Adding Frazier is great…but if Pham or Myers have to come out of the lineup for him to be on the field the upgrade is less.

I get the feeling he will play some 2b and some LF…..which makes us deeper….. but how much better?

As has been mentioned,  protection for LF next year when Pham leaves? Maybe he goes to RF, allowing Tingler to platoon Myers and Hosmer at first? Or does he play 2b, kicking Cronenworth to first and just flat out benching Hosmer? Former seems far more reasonable than latter?

I'd have much preferred a starter who can throw 100+ pitches over 6 innings every fifth day( who wouldn't???) But they seem in such short supply, I'm sure the cost would have been a great deal more than we gave for Frazier.

Sort of suggests if two play … one should always be Frazier. Also, Frazier was a gold glove finalist in 2020 (think 2B). As it is in 2021 WAR lays out: Frazier (2.9); Myers (1.0); Hosmer (-0.4).

Think an INF of Machado - Tatis - Frazier - Cronenworth … all were All-Stars this year and all a good defensively.

Pham is going nowhere but Frazier is going to play taking time from Hosmer, Myers, Profar, and Kim since he hits both LH and RH pitching.

Hosmer is the one I would try to move (he can be traded this year and next) … even eat his remaining 2021 salary … clearing this $20MM for next season. Some team (e.g. Boston) might take the flyer on Hosmer if their need is severe at 1B in the pennant race.

I guess fortunately (at least in one sense) there don’t seem to be top shelf options on the market. That should align with Preller not wanting to deal Abrams - Hassell - Gore - Campusano.

So what does it take to get the pitchers that may be on the market … ex those top four prospects. With Marcano (#5) gone the Padres top 10 is very thin:

Lange is in rookie ball … Lawson is on the 60 day IL (has not pitched much in a few years) … Ona is on the 60 day IL (and has little minor league track record) … Mears in low A … Thompson is just so-so RP in AAA after that either very very young or in full season without much success … maybe except Rosario.

I guess Lange - Mears - Rosario could appeal as part of a package … otherwise some surging non-Top 30 becomes appealing.

IF Preller goes for “rentals” … take some salary for 2021 … probably can get away with some non-premium prospects … so still feasible to make positive adds.

Almost set-up for one of Preller's 3 team specials with either Myers / Hosmer going to a contender (along with cash) ... contender sends prospects to a non-contender with someone the Padres covet ... Padres get that piece from the non-contender. (note: would prefer they move Hosmer .. worst hitter and limited in the field plus his contract goes on for years and goes to 10-5 no trade rights after next season).

Boston is a good option given they are in a tough battle with TB (who just got Cruz) for the AL East and have one of the worst 1B set-ups in MLB. Hosmer has the better reputation of playoff quality and with the Green Monster in Boston his swing could be very productive going opposite field.

Not sure how much cash the Padres would have to send to Boston with Hosmer ... at a minimum the remainder of 2021 salary ... maybe some buy down of 2022. Bit dependent on the prospects going from Boston to the 3rd team which is dependent on the quality (control) of the piece coming to the Padres and whether the Padres throw in some prospects. Complex ... yes but this is the world of Preller.
