Figured Pom would be.  Should be retroactive to 5/10.   Thought Ramirez might just stay up for him.  May be a technical reason he can't

I will be interesting to see the strategy surrounding the call-up. Not as though any major prospect is pushing the envelope ... pitcher or hitter.

With Pomeranz going IL ... Padres are at 14 pitchers (the level that was the norm for this year) and only 12 position players (one down) and without Tatis / Hosmer / Myers / Profar / Mateo as full time regulars probably the need to mix and match more with the subs ... argument for the call up being a position player.

If you buy that .... only Campusano is on the 40 man (but he could free up Nola / Caratini to play other positions. On the other hand, if you see a stronger need for an infielder ... will need another 60 IL move (or DFA) to add a non-roster type. We are only talking a week ... so probably don’t want to make a move with negative longer term impacts.

I guess Altavilla and Williams are next in line for the 60 day IL ... both have been out for about a month and no word on the doing baseball activities ... and as pitchers will take some time to get into ML shape. If that is the route .... might get Castillo since he can fit at SS/2B.

Don't forget Keone Kela might be a 60-day IL...

I hope you're right, I HATE the 3-man bench.  But with CP/Weathers/Lamet/Diaz essentially = 2 SP right now, the RP feels too "light" (and too RH, but can't fix that) losing Pom & Ramirez.  The main issue is that Lamet isn't a RP who can go 2 IP when called on, he's a SP only going 2 IP so far on his days...

So I'm guessing Northcraft.  sigh

Just changed my mind. Realized we have 5 "SP" going in 3 days after an off day.  Should be able to "get by" with a 7-man pen for at least this series.

I like Castillo & he's versatile, but see "Around MLB Non-Pads" for who I would add  🙂

And the winner is: IVAN CASTILLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4th MLB debut in 2021:  Kim, Marcano, Aaron Northcraft, now Castillo.

He'll probably start @ 2B vs the LH SP tomorrow.

Just for the record ... yesterday's moves ...

To clear space on the roster for Profar and Mateo, the Padres sent outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and infielder Ivan Castillo to Triple-A El Paso.

If I understand this correctly, per SDUT & Fangraphs Roster resource & logic/common sense (but not Padres MLB home page):

Castillo WAS actually "Selected" to 40-man roster (tons of room temporarily until all back from Covid stuff), and then Optioned.

But Kivlehan was a Covid protocols emergency replacement; he presumably got MLB pay for those 5 games, but was never "officially" on 40-man roster.  He was "Returned to Minors", not "optioned".  Same thing will happen in a day or 3 to Andreoli, whereas O'Grady will be optioned.

When the dust settles & all 5 guys are back from Covid stuff, a roster move has to be made to open Castillo's spot.  This will be any of Kela, Williams, Altavilla to 60-day IL.

The interesting part to me is that they chose to add Castillo, but didn't have to (he could have been a "Returned to Minors" guy)..... I am wondering if Pads are planning to recall him after 10 days... to temporarily trade places with Ha-Seong Kim.  It makes a lot of sense.  Castillo as a bat first SH contact guy is a pretty ideal 1st PH.  He can occasionally spell Cronenworth (vs LHP) at 2B , who DOES need some time off his feet.... but Tatis just had 10 days off.  He is going to start every day.  Jake might spell him a day at SS over the 20 game stretch.  Kim's playing time is going to shrink to near zero.  Unless he goes 5-6 these last few games or Tatis starts making 2 errors/game, maybe keep Kim playing daily in AAA at least for a 10 day stint when Tatis is completely "fresh"/rested to try to jump start Kim's bat?

I am not sure why ... when they returned Profar and Mateo (both INF/OF) they did not keep Castillo up and return Andreoli who likely is sitting today behind Pham - Grisham - O’Grady - Mateo - Profar in the OF.

One report had Tatis returning tomorrow (apparently 10 days from the test)  ... that may be a factor and spell the end of Andreoli. No word on Hosmer but think he should be off tomorrow spelling the end of either Marcano or O’Grady. Myers on Friday taking down the other. The back to the pre-COVID team.

Doubt Kim gets optioned at any point and expect him ... against a bit of a “softer” schedule in the coming weeks ... getting time at 2B and 3B.
