2021 In season Roster Moves
Quote from fenn68 on July 31, 2021, 6:06 pmThose 3 “rentals” helped make the playoffs … knew that going in … and not earth shaking prospects dealt … worth the price.
Same could be said for Clevinger and Nola/Adams … and making the playoffs when you have a shot (especially in SD) is worth moving a ton of marginal prospects when you have them.
Have to consider that if these prospects were really good … given this volume … there would be not room on the 40 man so either they would have been taken in Rule 5 or if on the 40, claimed via waivers. If protected, a different player would be lost via those two routes. If not on the 40 and not claimed … probably not a big prospect anyway.
As I said in the other post … that probably factors into the decision of dealing Espinosa, Thompson, Suwinski, and Miliano this year.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 6, 2021, 1:41 pmEven with the most recent trades, almost all the Padres' prospects in the upper minors who are having decent seasons are Rule 5 eligible. I'm thinking they'll try to keep a few in hard to develop positions, like Valenzuela and/or Hozma at catcher, or someone who has shown promising power, like Agustin Ruiz, but almost all minor league systems have prospects like the Padres do with some holes in their overall game. With so many pitchers (mostly injured or aging with team/mutual options) on the roster, with the exception of Gore, Padres probably won't or can't protect guys like Adrian Martinez, Sabrowski or Waldron. Fortunate that Abrams, Hassell and Angeles are all not Rule 5 eligible and Campusano is already on the 40 man. It should be an interesting winnowing out period as the Padres look head to 2022 and a new CBA.
By the way, does anyone know the status of Allen Cordoba? Seems to have enough time to be a free agent after this year but maybe he's someone who's somehow hooked into the Padres beyond 2021? His comeback story after severe injury is remarkable and would like him to get another chance in the majors. Has remade himself from that skinny player we saw in 2017 at PETCO to more of a solid 3b/of prospect with a little more power but less speed; a possible sold utility player if he can continue to show a good hit tool.

Quote from fenn68 on August 6, 2021, 3:11 pmPredict Rule 5 protects: Gore (LHP); Martinez (RHP); Sabrowski (LHP); E.Rosario (INF); Valenzuela (C). Note: don’t think Waldron is Rule 5 eligible.
Also, of the 10 on the 60 day IL will need to accommodate at a minimum: Clevinger; Morejon; Castillo; and probably Baez.
So that is 9 to be added to the 40 man for the winter … clearly a lot of heads will roll off the current 40 man.
========
Think they have to bias a bit toward pitching (always need more than you think) with Musgrove / Clevinger FA after 2022 and Darvish / Snell / Lamet FA after 2023.

Quote from fenn68 on August 6, 2021, 3:18 pmOn Cordoba, think he becomes a minor league FA after the season … good chance the Padres resign him next winter for AAA unless his agent finds another team interested with a path to the ML not blocked by the likes of Machado since the Padres have him sitting as a 3B.
Personally, I would work him more in the OF … Padres have little depth there.

Quote from fenn68 on August 7, 2021, 4:13 pmNext 3-4 weeks should generate some interesting roster moves (assuming no new IL candidates).
1. 40 man roster is filled and with Williams (on the 60 day) in a rehab assignment and needs to be added back to the 40 man in about 3 weeks (and has no minor league options) either he is DFA or added to the 26 man and someone is optioned and someone is DFA. (Note if he makes it to Sept 1 the 26 man roster becomes 28 and then only a 40 man move is needed).
2. 26 (28 on Sept 1) will be juggled with Williams but additionally the 5 other IL players: Pitchers: Hudson; Lamet; Paddack …. Position: Tatis; Profar … if they lag a few and work with the ones with minor league options they can preserve them all (except the one DFA for Williams off the 40 man … Anderson?).
====
This probably depends a lot where the Padres sit in the standings near Sep 1 but the Sep 1 28 player limit may block a Sept call-up of any prospect we may want to see get some ML experience. Remember the minor league season goes to mid Sept …so they are active.

Before the game, the Padres claimed right-hander Shaun Anderson from the Orioles and optioned him to Triple-A El Paso.
A former third-rounder out of the University of Florida, Anderson has struck out 15 against 10 walks while posting a 9.16 ERA in 18 2/3 innings this year with the Twins and Orioles.
He has thrown nine scoreless innings this year for two Triple-A affiliates.
The Padres’ 40-man roster is now full

Could be a low cost but interesting gamble. Anderson has not had a stellar ML or MiL career and bounced around a number of organizations since he was drafted. However, looking back to his senior year in college at Florida (2015) he was a dominate RP ... 46.1 innings with a 0.97 ERA and 60K. Good enough for Boston to take him in the 3rd round (pick #88 overall). At that point for some reason Boston decided to covert him to a SP where he has been for most of his minor league career ... that did not work all that well.
Still he is only 26 so IF the Padres refocus him back to RP ... maybe he can reclaim some of that FLA production.
IF he stays on the 40 man ... he can be optioned in 2022. Plus given his "travels" good chance if DFA would clear and get assigned to El Paso. If he has nothing ... Padres only have spent minimal bucks for the look.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 14, 2021, 6:27 amSo based on the status of Darvish and Paddack and Weathers poor performance do we pick up a guy like Aaron Sanchez?
He didn't pitch that poorly this year and has cleared waivers.
Just a thought.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 14, 2021, 9:08 amWe could use an injection of some kind about now.
Only saving grace I can see going forward is that we are really good against good teams( whereas both Duds and Reds are not) So, as the weather cools and the schedule heats up, we should play better.
