He didn't pitch that poorly this year and has cleared waivers.

Not sure why SF released him other than he spent the 3 months prior to July 29th on the IL (arm issue). Nice in his 3 appearances since his return (7 innings total and 2 ER).
At this point in the season probably can’t go deep as a starter … might be a long man but if so, why did he get released?

We just need major league arms at this point.
What would be a corresponding move to make room for him? Dump Williams( he's on the 40 man, right?)?

No, Williams is on the 60 day IL (not counted on the 40 man) ... he will be a debate when his rehab ends. Still some low hanging fruit on the 40 man though in my mind that will not survive the cuts to make the winter 40 man.

Report is that the Padres are talking to veteran FA pitchers (including but limited to Arrieta). It appears the ILs for Paddack, Lamet, and Darvish may be more problematic than hoped .. Weathers is struggling … leaving them with only Musgrove and Snell to hold the SP together without falling out of contention.

What about Aaron Sanchez? DFA by SF and pitched better this year than Arrieta.

Still possible … heard Preller today and he basically said they are still looking at FA options … so Arrieta may not be the end.

Side note: Hamels is out for the season with a shoulder issue … so, that goes with Duffy on the IL with a forearm issue. Not good outcomes for the LAD … so sad.

September 1 call-ups: Lamet and Taylor Williams (surprised?)
To make room for Williams coming off the 60 IL … Strahm added to the 60 day IL (will end his season and maybe his SD career)

Unless the 2021 rules are different, Padres will have to deal with Wingenter and Ona coming off the 60 day IL before the end of the season ... both can be optioned to the minors but both would require an offsetting 40 man roster move, so not a big deal considering the players who would likely be released at the end of the season to create the winter 40 man.
- Wingenter sent to rehab on Aug 14 (pitchers get 30 days) so should be off on or about Sep 13th.
- Ona sent on rehab Aug 12 (position players get 20 days) so should be off on or about Sep 2.

Watching the game on TV and as they were discussing the SEP 1 roster expansion and the addition of Lamet and Williams they said the limit on pitchers would move to 14 ... they could be wrong (probably are) but the Padres are now at 15 pitchers / 13 position players on the active roster. So some clarification is needed.
***** Addendum: the 14 pitcher max after Sep 1 rule has been suspended for COVID reasons, per one source.

Javy Guerra sent on rehab to ACL. Williams failed in rehab and was waived. Wingenter did fairly well but not pitched for awhile. Guerra will have only a week or so to make an impression on whether he is worthwhile protecting.
