2021 In season Roster Moves

Don't think Rivas has any trade value of significance and really doubt Kim is moved with Marcano out of the picture. If anything happened to Tatis ... not eager to see Cronenworth or Machado shift to SS.

Just a few moments ago on MLBTR, Rosenthal reiterates that Hosmers name has surfaced in recent trade talks. He lists 3 teams in the AL that could make sense as a destination for Hosmer. BAL, DET, and of course back to KC. And in the NL, he lists CHC as a possibility should the Cubs move Rizzo. He does mention that very good prospect or two would need to be attached for a team to take Hosmer. He lists these teams, due to Hosmers good clubhouse reputation and these teams are getting closer to the point that SD was in 2017 when we signed Hosmer ourselves.

I think a return to KC makes the most sense. Maybe something around Duffy and Hosmer if Duffy is healthy?

makes sense although given Hosmer's contract (size and opt out after next season) going to be hard to sell that to a rebuilding team maybe 2 - 3 years away without buying down the contract. As for prospects going with him depends a bit on the the add being a rental vs. multi year. If a rental, might not be heavy prospect demand (e.g. Duffy) and not sure I would want them to get just Duffy type controlled for more than this season (and pay more).

With Darvish, Snell, Musgrove, Weathers, Paddack, Lamet, and Clevinger already in contention for a 2022 starting role ... would rather wait to consider an upgrade in SP until a more significant arm becomes available and/or they know at least two of the above can't pitch in 2022.

The KC idea is interesting ... the ownership really liked him and maybe believe they can retain him past the opt out. KC and Preller have worked deals in the past. Getting Duffy is good but getting out of Hosmer's contract is better for the future. KC is not cash rich ... so salary will be an issue.

Surprised Boston was not mentioned.

What about the Yankees for Hosmer?

They may not be able to take their Division but they are still in the WC chase and have a need at 1b this year and beyond.

If dumping Hosmers' salary is the key maybe a deal around RH RP Chad Green?

He's a free agent after this year so is only a rental so that should cut down on how much we have to attach to Hoz.

Probably because Luke Voit is expected to return in early August and, if needed LeMahieu can handle 1B ... Stanton is the DH so no flexibility. Doubt the would give up a RP .. they need one more than the Padres.

I am still hung up on Boston whose 1B situation is the worst (by a fair margin) in MLB. Their best option is RHH Bobby Dalbec who is barely hitting over .200. Hosmer is better and, if needed, Dalbec could come in vs. some LHP. 2021 luxury tax an issue with Boston BUT they have a ton coming off the books in 2022 so minimal issue then. Hosmer in Boston with the Green Monster and his swing should be very very enticing to Boston.

I would move Hosmer just to move the contract and not care about a return. INF: Machado - Tatis - Frazier - Cronenworth works for the Padres.

Don't forget Hosmer's contract is 21 M for 2022 and then he has an opt out or salary drops to 13 M for the last 3 years which would be a little more reasonable . I hope KC would bite on that since they are more nostalgic than most teams . They love to bring back their old heros at a lesser cost. Maybe a few M this year and 8 M next year and a couple of 10 to 20 on the depth chart. Move Myers to 1st Frazier to RF and leave Jake at 2nd where he is at his best.

That works for me.

Hard to play this game with someone such as Preller but going into yesterday most folks were focusing on the Padres adding pitching (linking the Padres to about every available arm) ... then loosely with bats (most notable Gallo) or maybe a RHH.

Then the first move by Preller is 1) a bat; 2) LHH; 3) someone who had not been linked with the Padres. Sort of proving that the world of "rumors" and the reality of Preller don't match. While all are looking left ... Preller is making moves on the right.

So, again all the writers are focused on the Padres adding pitching (along with about every other contender) and maybe in a battle with the LAD for the better pitchers.

COULD Preller again fake all out and add another impact bat ... Joey Gallo. Heard a comment that the addition of Frazier does not take that off the board ... may be linked to the clearing of space by moving Hosmer (and / or Myers). Available pitching is limited ... demand is high ... over paying will occur BUT while all are focused on pitching move on to the impact bat not being heavily pursued at a more reasonable price ... and just pound all the opponents into the ground?

It is Preller, so the obvious may not be right.

Since I think we are power light from the left hand side of the plate, I would say that Gallo would work nice in RF.

Key IMO would be to make something happen with Hosmer. Move Myers to a platoon/bench role.

Then you roll with a daily line up of Machado, Tatis, Frazier, and Crone, with an OF of Pham, Grisham, and Gallo. Leaving Myers as a power bat off the bench, or could spot start him in LF, RF, or 1B.

The problem in the past, is that Myers has not done well with the spot start, bench, position rotation role. So does Myer's bat fade away completely?

What would be nice is Myers going back to TEX to replace Gallo, plus the prospects to get Gibson and Kennedy at the same time.

SD gets Gallo, Gibson, and Kennedy, TEX gets Myers, Gore, and 3 other prospects not named Hassell, Abrams, or Campusano.

Or Myers/Hosmer platoon at 1b.

Crone stays at 2b and Frazier plays RF.

This assuming we don’t get Gallo of course.

IF they went in on Gallo almost can’t send Myers (and his contract) without adding more prospects … even more if wanted Gibson and / or Kennedy too.

Would think Gallo (controlled in 2022 under a reasonable Arb 3 level) by himself would be pricy since Texas does not have to trade him now (could wait until the winter). I see more of a Gallo for Campusano base trade and then sprinkle in a couple of minor other prospects.

Given the uncertainty of Pham for next season and the potential of moving Hosmer plus the DH (maybe) … no necessarily worried about moving Myers who can play 1B/OF/DH in his last season … would not move a decent prospect just to get him off the team.
