2020 Team Roster and Season

PreviousPage 21 of 22Next

UNDERSTAND THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN (OR SHOULD IT) BUT:

maybe setting a thought for the future. Took a look at defense at SS by both Tatis and Urias are both well below average ... based on stats (so potentially disputable).

There are 37 SS in 2019 with > 300 innings at SS so:

Tatis (731 innings) ... dWAR at -1.8 (34th in MLB) ... UZR/150 at -8.4 (30th) ... plus a high error rate at -4.6 (probably can be fixed).

Urias (317 innings) ... dWAR at +0.5 (30th) ... UZR/150 at -6.4 (29th) ... plus a high error rate at -2.4 (probably can be fixed).

Tatis’ offense and personality (and really no alternative) will keep him at SS for a few years .. but if you believe a plus defensive SS is important ... hope that Arias’ defense is as billed and he can hit. Given the body type of his father and being 6’4” and only 20 ... should see some bulk up and that will not help that range factor. Tatis may be the RF of the future with his speed and arm.

Urias is not significantly better defensively at SS and shouldn’t be a threat to supplant him (but also not a trade chip as a SS). On the positive ... a below average SS might be an above average defensive 2B where range factor is less demanding.

Something for the future.

For your amusement, sitting 37th (out of 38) on dWAR is ..... Trea Turner. Take that for what it is worth.

Urias has always been and will always be a 2B. He really shouldn't even fill in at SS. As far as Tatis is concerned, having a competent defensive SS that can hit like he can has HUGE value. It's like people wanting to move Mejia from C. When you have a bat like that at C with even passable defense you thank god and move on. Besides, it would take explosives to get Tatis off of SS. His value is maximized there. That is also why Trout will not move to an OF corner even though his defense has gone down hill. At CF his bat is miles ahead of anyone else. At the corners he has to compete with Bellinger, Yelich and Acuna. All of a sudden he has fallen right back to the pack and he would likely still be the worst defender of that group.

I think Tatis is a better SS defensively than this years stats show.

As he matures he will stop forcing throws trying to do too much.....which would have eliminated quite a few of his errors this season.

I agree Mr. Nevin. Most of his errors seem to come on his throws. He tries to do those off balance flip throws and he misses. He will eventually learn that he has to set his feet. His arm is strong enough to still make the play. He seems to be trying to do it the way that "looks cool". Like Machado. It just doesn't work for Tatis.

So how about this for a possible out of the box scenario to a LHH good bat. Why dont we sign Gregorius and place him at SS, and move Tatis to RF. I know a lot of us love him at SS, but some of you think he will have to move away from SS at some point in his career. Maybe playing in the grass saves some wear and tear on the body. He has the speed and arm for a RF, and then we could add a .270 BA with .325 OBP with 20+ HR power that can actually drive in runs LH bat?

Dont slaughter me too much JE135

I am all for it if you can convince him to do it. Everyone thinks they are a SS. You may have to hit him over the head with a big sack of change a few times to get him to go for it. You do that and I will watch for witnesses.

Creative thinking ... Didi is by far the better defensive SS ... track record with a winning operation ... needed LHH with a proven track record.

2019 was injury plagued .. not sure how that is viewed going forward but the previous year were healthy. Age not an issue 29-30ish. NYY will drop a QO on him but a minor drawback ... the contract demand is a ???? Not sure who the completion will be for a SS (at his price tag).

The “sensitive” part is getting Tatis (your prize future star) to actually buy into the move to the OF (actually with his speed could be CF or RF).

Side on Tatis’ defense ... yes, errors are an issue that may be corrected but a major part of his statistically poor defense is a range factor near the bottom of SS and as (as most project) he continues to bulk up from his lean age 20 body that range should only get worse.

So from a team standpoint is having DiDi at SS / Tatis on the OF better than Tatis at SS / PTNL in the OF? Can’t look at this one on one but the combo comparison.

Interesting.

IIRC, Didi's injury was TJ surgery. So not a big concern on the injury bug hitting him IMO. Games played in 2015-2018 was 155, 153,136,134.

Made $11.75M and probably has a desire towards staying in NYY, so maybe a 4 yr/$75M. Plus, would also be insurance for 2B if Urias does not produce the way we hope, DiDi can also play 2B, or look at Tatis at 2B.

More of Didi playing 2B.. Urias being traded for a LHH OF ..type of domino... No way Tatis Jr moves off SS at the moment... But maybe you give him a day off or 2..let him play a little 2B ..flip flop him and Didi here and there.. Spells Manny at 3B on occasion... Etc.m other ways of getting Tatis Jr a break than just sitting him out a game or 2.. Movingvhim around will tax his body less and increase hia value to us...not to mention keeping him healthier
