2020 Team Roster and Season
Quote from MrPadre19 on September 6, 2019, 1:24 pmI think the key to 2020 is Wil Myers.
He's only 28 year sold and two years removed from a 30hr/20sb season.
Is he really the guy we've seen the last two years or is he the 25/25 guy we had just a couple years ago?
If he hits it would be a huge addition to our offense....plus any recovery would help our ability to move him and gain some financial flexibility.
There are obviously many other keys....like Tatis staying healthy.....the rotation...the bullpen....growth of the youngsters etc...
But which Wil Myers we get the next 2 years is HUGE in my opinion to how far our window actually opens.

Remember, though, that we not only need overall production from Myers, but consistent production as well. Even in his best years he's been prone to extremely hot and extremely cold streaks. I've always felt that players like that are, at best, complimentary pieces and should not be relied on as key offensive drivers.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 6, 2019, 1:59 pmEvery player has ups and downs. Remember that Myers used to carry this team in years past when he was "ON". If he can recover his previous stroke, he can provide tremendous value to the team. There was a reason the Padres gave him the contract he has. If he can give us the .250-.260 Avg, .330 OBP, 25HR and 25SB he used to we will be loving life! Renfroe is what he is; low OBP, low AVG, plus defense, cannon arm and big power. I can live with that. Our next new OF will be Trammell. If he works out in CF we have a good OF. We will have to give quality to receive quality in trades. Look at what we gave up to get Trammell! I seriously doubt we will be getting any new OF this off season unless we overpay. We will just have to wait for CJ Abrams, Torso Ornelas, Jeisson Rosario, Hudson Head, or the guy with the highest upside but most risk-Ismael Mena. Trying to fix this immediately is counterproductive. Give the guys we have a few years. We should be great in 2021-2022.

Great point Sport... Myers ALWAYS runs hot & cold within a year.
One of the fundamental things the Pads have to get to is having guys in the right place in a playoff caliber lineup. Myers or Franmil Reyes is not a #2 hitter on a playoff team... Myers, Margot (vs RHP), is not a leadoff hitter. Neither is a guy with 30 HR+ potential like Tatis; wasting the power there. You can't let a guy's contract dictate where he is in the lineup in 2020 if you're scratch & clawing for every game. The reality is, that with Myers' career OBP & high K #'s he's a marginal #6 hitter on a playoff caliber NL team. The fact he used to bat higher on crappy Pads teams in the past bears no relevance to where he should be in the 2020 lineup based on his current & career productivity....
GM & Manager have stubbornly resisted this a lot of the year.

Quote from JasonE135 on September 6, 2019, 4:41 pmTo be honest Tatis does not have a perfect place in the lineup. He strikes out too much for leadoff. He probably isn't going to be a consistent .300 hitter, this year was his first time. No hitter (other than Trout) is perfect. You just do the best with what you have.

Quote from Commie on September 7, 2019, 4:18 pmThe TOR SP acquisition bit was referenced in the UT again this a.m. I don't see one available this offseason. Rather go for middle of rotation vet who can be counted on to run the staff and soak up 200+ innings of quality ball vs overpaying in prospect capital for Thor or $$$ for Cole.

Hosmer is the only offensive player who was consistent all year yet everyone still complains about him.
You could say Tatis but he just missed too much time.
Everyone else went thru incredibly bad streaks this season.

Quote from BoosterSD on September 7, 2019, 8:07 pmCole is just money. So who am I to argue with ownership if they think they have the ability to carry a $150M payroll to add Cole.
I would say that the casual SD fan's problem with Hosmer is two fold. One, is not flashy in the HR category, especially for a 1B. Although he will still drive in 100 this year, so who cares if he does by singles and doubles or HRs. Two, while this year has been a nice year for him, last year was a down. So who is he going to be next year?

Quote from JasonE135 on September 7, 2019, 9:06 pmThe problem with Hosmer puts up the kind of numbers that you expect from an average hitter, not someone with a big contract. Is it just me or does a guy who hits .280 with 20HRS every other year not sound like the kind of guy who should have a $100+ million dollar contract?

Quote from JasonE135 on September 7, 2019, 9:19 pmUnfortunately Booster, I am sure that Cole will be looking to break the bank and probably wants a 10 year contract. The Padres cannot do that, because in 5 years everyone like Paddack, Tatis and Urias will be looking for contracts. Besides that Manny will probably be leaving then. Cole is going to want more than he is worth and he very well may get it. He may give 4-5 more years of premium value but he will expect premium money for twice that long.
