Quantrill gets his first ST start with this line up
Tatis-SS
Naylor-LF
Machado-3B
Hosmer-1B
Profar-2B
Mejia-C
Owen Miller-DH
Cordero-RF
Almonte-CF
This could be a interesting line up.....the Outfield to watch for sure, Profar at 2B, Miller with some AB's and even though Quantrill will be on a short leash/inning/pitch count hopefully he attacks hitters and sets the tone for the starting rotation competition
Hope it's on the radio

Good first outing I'd say. Did you see it?

Quote from sportwarrior on February 25, 2020, 9:54 amWe absolutely shouldn't sleep on Quantrill. He's got the stuff to be a mid rotation starter. If he can get that command in order we're looking at many more games like he gave us in July than we are games he gave us in September.

Quote from onlypads on February 25, 2020, 10:02 amBut I also feel that way about Joey Fuego. If his new change up moves the other way, he may be have mid rotation stuff and he appears pretty durable.

Difference being that Lucchessi has been around for a while now. Not exactly old dog/new tricks territory, but I don't imagine he'll be fixing his control issues anytime soon. Right on queue the dude threw a wild pitch in the first inning today. He throws way, way too many pitches that are easily taken as balls right out of the hand. Until he fixes that he won't be a key part of a playoff team.

I'm rooting for Joey but unless his stuff is so live that hitters can't get good wood on his pitches I agree that he needs to curb the wp's. Is there something he's adding to his arsenal this Spring? Testing a pitch out?

Quote from fenn68 on February 26, 2020, 1:52 amSaw the speculation that we could see Profar as the super utility option ... has experience at a lot of slots with Dozier and Garcia covering 2B.
Alternatively, Profar may be released before the season .... only would be 25% of his salary due. Performance in ST is the key.

Profar is an ideal super utility type as athletic SH with pop who can play the entire INF... but an awfully expensive one at 5.7 MM. His 5.7 + Dozier 2.2 (+incentives) + Garcia 1.5 MM = 10 MM+? on 2B & INF bench > many teams, and particularly steep with half team payroll to 3 guys, and a huge $ investment in bullpen too... but could do it in 2020 with likely all 3 guys not returning in '21, because we have so little $ being spent on our SP compared to most teams.
Really a true ST performance battle between Profar, Dozier & others. Easy to say we "don't need" the super utility guy with our INF, especially if 2B is a platoon.... until something happens to one of those guys. Pads would have to feel like someone else is >/= Profar at each INF position as the injury replacement for the starter to let him go.

Quote from 3fingersplit on February 26, 2020, 7:51 amI thought Joey pitched ok.....still puts to many in the dirt like the one that bounced away from Torrens and scored the run, his fastball is in that 88-90 mph so that really isn't his thing and his velocity dropped over the season last year. His delivery drives me nuts because it's just so much effort and it makes his arm slot unforgiving but it got him to the big leagues so I guess it's a case of "Dance with the gal that brung ya"
I thought it was interesting that the two starters that throw the hardest among the starters are Lamet at 95.9 mph and then Quantrill at 94.5 mph....Paddack is at 93.9 mph and Lucchesi isn't even listed on statcast because he doesn't throw enough of them to register....sinker, cutter, change up stats
I like Joey because he is a gamer and a lefty which means he will have a job for a long time in MLB but Quantrill has that ability to put some "giddyup" on his fastball and high heat is a great weapon to have but he is right handed and having a lefty in the rotation is a good change of pace....tough decision for the Padres but a great quality problem to have
