2020 Spring Training Thread

I see Dozier as the starting 2B ... even with his low BA last season a very good OBP (something the Padres are emphasizing) and power. Profar as the "super utility" guy as a switch hitter (which as I recall was what Preller deemed him when the trade went down although most concluded he would be the 2B). Both make the 26 man. Doubt Dozier at his age will be an every day (162 game) 2B so probably a lot of 2B for Profar too. Dozier probably had the discussion with Preller before the signing so no surprise.

Think Garcia's advantage over Cronenworth may be as a veteran who can hit RHP and understands his role as a bench player even with a severe issue with LHP. However, that may put some pressure on keeping a RHH bench player if for nothing else than PH duties since not expecting a lot of opportunities given the composition of the starters.

If Dozier starts ... Profar (RHH/LHH), Garcia (LHH), then preferably one of the other two bench players is a RHH since Garcia is useless as a PH vs. LHP. Maybe that is a window for Lagares (but he really can't hit) or France (but jury is out on him at the the ML level and is limited defensively). Back to my other post ... maybe Preller is still on the hunt for a RHH veteran for that balance.

Can't see both Cordero and Naylor on the 26 man as LHH ... still prospects ... and not getting any playing time behind Pham - Grisham - Myers ... might be difficult to justify one since defense is not their strong suit. At least not to start the season unless there is injuries.

Hard to read the thinking of the Padres but if they plan on contending and winning out of the gate ... advantage for veterans with a track record and sending the prospects to AAA. Maybe that bolsters Lagares' chances for one of the other 2 bench slots?

After listening to Tingler, barring a complete meltdown I believe Cronenworth makes the 26 man.

FWIW

I like Garcia but Cronenworth makes him obsolete.

If that is true ... maybe it is Cordero and Naylor back to AAA as LHH and with Profar able to play corner OF and the add Lagares as the true RHH CF reserve. Dozier starts ... bench of Garcia (LHH), Cronenworth (LHH), Lagares (RHH), and Profar (LHH/RHH).

Three weeks to sort this all out.

Just a hunch.....who knows?

Despite most positions written in stone the open ones are pretty "wide" open.

Lots of options.

Notables IMO.

Really nice to see that Trammell is having a good ST. Sounds like he put in some work and its showing.

Nice to see Morejon have a strong outing. Some indications are there that he may be more reliable and in a better headspace. Baez appears poised and effective. He appears to be building on last year's success.

Haven't seen much from Cordero, Hedges, or Mejia.  Haven't yet seen much from Lagares or  Beckam.

Bullpen "on paper" appears to be translating to an in game strength.

Next level positional players show promise i.e. Arias and Olivares.

Vosler and Potts may have a bit of life after all, or do they...

2B platoon shows some promise: Profar, Garcia, and Dozier seem to all have strengths that if put together may be productive.

Curious about Cronenworth and France..what will happen...

Myers appears to be focused and at least tapping into his power.

I believe that there is room on the 26 for both Profar and Dozier along with Garcia. I see Dozier with 110-120 starts against LHSP and the middle to bottom of the rotation RSHP, and Garcia going against the really tough RSHPs.

I see Profar being the super sub, especially with some concern about Phams throwing arm. I can see Profar being the LFer when we are playing the AL in interleague play, and at least one start a week off for Pham. At least to through the 1st half, to save the bullets in Phams arm for the second half. I can also see Profar getting some occaissional starts for Machado and Tatis to keep them fresh as well, and Hosmer should we see that he is still having issues v LHP. I would have Profar take reps in CF this spring so he can spell Grisham against tough LHSP. All these options should get Profar some between 4-6 starts a week, and keep him happy.

I see the starting 8 being Machado, Tatis, Dozier, Hosmer, Pham, Grisham, Myers, and Mejia. The bench being Profar, Garcia, France, Lagares, and Hedges. I think its best for Naylor, Cordero, and Cronenworth to start the season in AAA. And maybe even AA for Cronenworth since its a better pitching option than El Paso.

The rotation being Paddack, Richards, Lamet, Davies, Luchessi. The bullpen being Yates, Pomeranz, Pagan, Johnson, Perdomo, Guerra, Strahm, and Stammen.

Because they have options and some injury delays in some cases, or need to be stretched out to become starters again, Baez, Bednar, Castillo, Morejon, Munoz, Reyes, and Wingenter.

Good call on the opening day 26 roster.

It is not clear how the Padres will fit all their starters in this week. They have only outlined their plans through Wednesday.

Garrett Richards is pitching for the first time Tuesday against the Brewers. Adrian Morejon will start Wednesday against the Royals. That is also the game in which Luis Patino, the team’s second-ranked pitching prospect, is scheduled to make his first spring appearance.

It would seem likely Zach Davies or Dinelson Lamet starts Thursday with the other working in relief. One of them could could pitch on a back field instead, or Lamet could start Friday.

Cal Quantrill, sidelined by the flu at the end of last week, will also have to be slotted in the coming days.

27 up 27 down by Padres pitching today. The lone hit was erased by a DP in the first. Garret Richards and Pomz both looked good to start off, too.

Sure, it's just spring, but the Pads sure have been fun to watch so far.

If Myers and Grisham hit this year......it’s gonna be a very interesting season.
