2020 Season
Quote from Randy Manese on September 27, 2020, 7:27 amEven if we don't win today, a 60% winning percentage should be enough to get into most playoff scenarios for a 162 game season. I calculate that at 97.2 wins. However, even in this short season, you'll need a deeper bench next year to get guys the blow, physically and mentally, to sustain a high level of performance over that long a season. Great 2020 season and let's get deep into the playoffs! Go Padres!

Quote from hoffy51 on September 27, 2020, 5:00 pmI don't understand. If we have the second best record, why aren't we playing the team with the second worst record of the playoff contenders? Why aren't we playing the Reds or the Marlins?

Because we didn't win our division ... division winners get 1st 3 seeds ...

Quote from Randy Manese on September 27, 2020, 11:37 pmIt's been a long time since I enjoyed a Padres season. Made even better by the joy I see in the dugouts and players pulling for each other. I'm looking forward to the playoffs this year as the first step in a new era of competitive baseball in San Diego for many years to come. Go Padres! You deserve to be where you are!

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 29, 2020, 7:48 amThere are always great moments even in bad seasons (like a bad golfer enjoys :), but this year was just completely different.
All the comebacks, sticking together through COVID shutting down ST, overcoming adversity, the emergence of Grisham & Cronenworth, the insane trade deadline.... No way I'll EVER forget the 2020 season!
Now Padres have to show it wasn't a fluke over the course of full length seasons going forward, but given that the expectations for most in March were "being in the wildcard race into Sept", and finishing above .500; I think it's safe to say the "GOOD" Padres team we've been told was coming for years arrived a year early, and the team looks to be in great position for the 2020's...

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 29, 2020, 12:47 pmI think this team would have been just fine over a full season.
Because it isn't just the starting eight and we had been very lucky health wise.
We have the depth that if we had a couple guys struggle or get injured we could have brought up someone that could have held their own IMO.
We only saw Campusano and Ona for a second....but if we needed them longer I think they would have been fine.
Same for Patino and Lucchesi. If we needed them to become our 5th starter I believe we would have been OK.
I am a little worried about the rest of our infield and outfield depth.
Allen,Mateo,Almonte...I'm thinking AJ may make some moves in the offensive depth area in the off season.
Who do we still have that has to be added to the 40 man after this season?

Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2020, 1:02 pmLawson is probably the only "high probability" to be added. There are some other "bodies" (like Marcano) but most are a long way off and not "blue chip". May just risk the Rule 5 selection and save those roster slots for more near ML ready support in 2021 via FA signings. With the FA to be ... not going to be an issue for the Rule 5 roster. Then consider the "out of option" players who if they don't make the 26 man roster next year have to be DFA ... even more room.
So, Preller at one level may be seeking some augmented bench support via both FA for the 40 man and non-roster invitees to ST. That would become more intense if the don't sign Profar who covers a lot of potential "holes" over a 162 game schedule.

Quote from fenn68 on September 29, 2020, 1:17 pmPadres were a bit lucky health-wise for position players in 2020 .... except for Pham the rest of the starters were there most of the time (Hosmer out a couple of short stints) and somehow Cronenworth came out of nowhere to handle 2B allowing Profar to play LF ... both vastly exceeding any pre-season projections. DH was a mix and match of spare parts.
Same team ... over 162 might not work that well with a limited bench (no one really viewed as even an average ML regular) and a clear issue with LHP on the bench and with Hosmer, Moreland, Cronenworth ... even Grisham and Nola. In 60 games some hot / cold streaks can cover some warts that other teams would expose over a 162.
Even with that said ... most of the line-up and the pitching would have kept the team in playoff contention over 162 (at least the team as it ended the year).
