2020 Season

PreviousPage 5 of 54Next

The only thing even close in that article is that the guy that wrote it just proved he knows almost nothing about pitching

If they actually get to play this year the Padres are a top 10 rotation if they get any support from the bats

That's what I am thinking and was wondering if it was my own "homerism".
But there is just no way our rotation should be that low OR behind those two teams.
If you assume health for all teams rotations(which you pretty much have to do in a case like this) I like our top 3 but obviously they don't stack up with at least 8-10 other teams.
I just think our #4 and #5 stack up really well with almost anyone.
I was really thinking that this season would be the one that established our rotation around the league.
Obviously almost no one outside San Diego knows how good Lamet is/can be.
Richards is all health questions.
Davies is a finesse pitcher and I'm thinking now being in Petco he will pitch like a #3.
Paddack we pretty much know and Joey as a #5 is really good as far as I'm concerned.

I am completely out of baseball shape.

I have been going to bed about 9:30 every night.

Usually this time of year I am up till Midnight or even later on close/exciting game nights.

I’m going to need a month myself to get ready when this is all over!

😉

Looks like our ownership team is looking after their people:

Teams in LA and NY are non committal and our guys step up to the plate. Well done Mr.'s Fowler and Seidler!

Doing a little trolling on the usual baseball sites, MLBTR and The Athletic, and it seems that MLB maybe approaching the MLBPA with a plan for resumption of play. The reason I mention the article from The Athletic is Bowden mentions the real possibility of a DH in the NL due to a seasonal realignment.

In the article, he mentions Wil Myers or Naylor as the best options for DH. I think this shows a lack of knowledge of the players on SDs roster. I think with Phams arm situation, he makes the best option for DH. With Myers in LF, Grisham in CF, and Cordero in RF.

Thoughts???

Not sure Pham arm is still a major concern ... enough to keep him out of the OF. He was throwing from distance before ST was shut down. Three to four months of additional recuperation should have him ready for OF time.

IF the season starts this summer ... the ST will be short (2-3 weeks max) which will likely give the advantage to the incumbents / known commodities. That probably leans towards Pham - Grisham - Myers in the OF with Naylor at DH. Naylor is clearly the worst OF in the mix. Cordero has to show a lot fast to offset his two years of limited play ... if the Padres want to "contend" fast ... he is the riskiest to give major playing time.

With a limited ST .... going to want to give max ABs to the starters out of the blocks but if Cordero is on the roster could see him as the back-up for all three OF slots and maybe "platoon" with Naylor at DH even both are LHH ... maybe depends on the SP. That also gives time to see which one emerges as the better hitter and if one of the starting OF gets injured (or major slump) Cordero is primed to step in.

ESPN  is reporting that MLB clubs might have a roster of 30 and up to 50 players available to rotate in. If there is no minor league season, do the Padres choose ten minor league players to be on the 50 roster so that they can work with them, not totally lose their season, and possibly get them in some major league games. Here are ten players that (in my opinion) the Padres must have some development from this year.

  1. Gore
  2. Patino
  3. Campusano
  4. Trammell (if he isn't one of the outfielders on the major league roster)
  5. Morejon
  6. Arias
  7. Lawson
  8. Osuna
  9. Cantillo (I picked him over Weathers to send Weathers a message about his weight)
  10. Espinoza (he just can't lose another year)

A lot of “if” / “then” conditions in making that call. Maybe makes some difference whether it is for 4 months or 2 months.

Earlier it sounded that the “extra” 4 players (going to 30 on the active roster) would be pitchers (makes sense if they do an abbreviated ST ... lucky to get 4 innings out of anyone early). The other 20 on the “taxi squad” may be a bit dependent on what they plan to do with them ... doubt they are just sitting around PETCO. Better bet they convene in AZ (with other teams) and play games ... if so, need to be able to field a team. Go that way maybe 10 position players (2 catchers minimum and use the DH) and 10 pitchers. Some should be legit call-up options while others can be developmental.

I guess some consideration should be given to the “prospects” who may be long shot call-up in 2020 but may be in contention for ML roles in 2021 to replace players that may depart (FA/trade).  Thinking someone like Miller (INF) if Profar (FA) and Garcia (on the bubble for a last season) ... and who knows the future of Dozier.

Probably should also consider how they may deploy prospects (if they can) in winter leagues for development purposes.

10 position players: Torrens / Campusano - Vosler - Miller - Arias - Mejia Breen - Trammell - Lagares - Almonte - Dozier (I see Cordero, Naylor, France, Cronenworth on the ML 30).

10 pitchers should be wide open (considering 4 will already be added to the active roster to carrying 17).

Have to be a little careful on the mix of those on the 40 man ..... may want them to be the first line of call-ups so as not to force a roster move and simultaneously prematurely start the clock on a prospect (and maybe use an option year in 2020 and 2021).

Tough to balance setting up the best scenario to contend in 2020 ... setting up for 2021 ... and developing the near (but not quite ready for 2021) prospects ... while putting a team on the field. Might make for curious choices.

It may be a little early considering the 2nd spring training hasn't even started or even been confirmed but what are your thoughts for the added 5 players if they indeed allow 30 man rosters?

I would have to think Cronenworth now makes the team for his versatility and ability to pitch.

Agree that Cronenworth’s chances are improved. Do expect 4 of the 5 will be dedicated pitchers and position players will be limited to 13.

However, Padres will have to make a call on Cronenworth’s ML readiness with very limited ML exposure ... while adding him to the active roster bumps someone else with a better ML track record. Plus, don’t know if the rules about using a position player to pitch is altered in 2020 for this “special situation”.

Given the shortened season and IF the Padres are aiming for the playoffs .... would the Padres risk using an unproven rookie vs a veteran core of Profar, Garcia, Dozier, and France (3 of those 4) ... other two bench spots go to OF/DH.

I guess given the desire to minimize team costs ... what are the rules about pay to players released during the new ST. Someone like Profar will carry a decent salary ... FA after the season ... what is he owed if cut before the season? The key days were in March to minimize liability .... those have passed but are they being “renegotiated”? Dozier is in a more vulnerable position.

Given all the extenuating circumstances ... will cash considerations outweigh immediate productivity? Will they make choices based on setting up for a better 2021 giving returning players more playing time and back off players not considered the future?

A lot of decision points to address prior to making the singular move.
