2020 Season

PreviousPage 48 of 54Next

It says a lot about this team that our best player is in the middle of his worst career slump.....1 for his last 14...and we have won 6 in a row.

Tatis really hasn't had a good game hitting in at least two weeks and lately his fielding and base running are starting to be less than stellar.  You can see that he is frustrated with his performance - maybe putting too much pressure on himself to try to be the league MVP?   He needs to forget about that and play loose for these next 12 games and into the playoffs.  We don't get too far in the post- season without Fernando contributing to this line-up against the better teams and pitchers in the league.   Hope we start to see it against LA, which is always a tough match-up.

Did a quick look at how the remaining games scheduled may impact the starting rotation. Actually all the off days MIGHT create a challenge in keeping the staff sharp and set-up the right SP for the three game round 1 series.

IF the Padres keep the current 4 man rotation after the LAD series there will be games with 5 or 6 rest days between starts. Padres will have to debate that ... is the extra rest good or does it serve to hurt the rhythm of the starters that will have to go on normal rest in the playoffs?

Not out of the realm of possibility they go with a 3 man rotation (Clevinger, Lamet, Davies) the rest of the way with Richards used in the pen (or start) as needed since likely they would need him at some point in the second round five game series. If the Padres are "locked" into a seeding ... might see one (or more) of the starters get pulled "early" for some rest and to get Richards innings in long relief role.

Not making this easier is the fact that MLB has not put out the Round One schedule beyond it starts on Tuesday, Sept 29th. Given there will be eight series and trying to get maximum TV exposure, good chance half the games start on the 29th and the other half on the 30th giving TV four days of coverage. (this also assumes the three games set is three consecutive games). If a team is starting later (WED) ... might want to makes sure its rotation lags a day for the last weekend. Setting up the starting pitchers with the desired amount of rest / work is just going to be a challenge.

Don't want to look too far ahead but if the World Series starts on Oct 23rd ... a lot of of time to get in the five game round 2 and the seven game round 3 ... with a number of "off days" scheduled.

Is Austin Adams on the forty man roster to be eligible for the playoffs?

Yes

He is on the 45 day IL but eligible for the playoffs IF he is reinstated to the 40 man (meaning an offsetting move would be required).

Unless he has been lights out at the alternate site (no idea even if he is even throwing at game intensity) ... not sure would be all that confident in a RP who has not pitched in a year while recovering for ACL surgery.

SD plays SEA next weekend in Seattle ... maybe.

The two games scheduled between SF and Seattle in Seattle has been shifted to SF for Wed/Thurs because of the air quality in Seattle due to the wildfires.

With Seattle in SF and SD (off day in SD) on Thursday ... MLB may choose to not have both teams travel to Seattle if the air quality is still “iffy” for Friday ... then is their a real point in trying to get to Seattle for SAT-SUN?

This is a weird year.

Looks as though Richards will be tested in the bullpen for the rest of the season. Makes sense with Lamet, Clevinger, and Davis as the starters for the 3 games in round 1 and 2 off days prior and 3 off days after ... need to evaluate him as a pen option for that series (or just how to use him). Long gap even if he starts the last weekend in SF then whenever in the 2nd round.

Paddack starts on Friday then back to the big three. No idea how the deal with the rest of the schedule to set up Lamet, Clevinger, and Davies for the last weekend in SF ... with Richards in the pen. Will they just go with more bullpen days to get the pen work (and serve as an evaluation tool for who gets activated for the playoffs)? At some point do they also send Paddack to work out of the pen so they can use him out of the pen in that first series?

Good chance they don't need a 4th SP until game 4 of round 2 (then without off days ... maybe a 5th starter vs short rest?). Richards and Paddack need to get work in Round 1 just to keep sharp for Round 2. For all teams that Round 2 with 5 consecutive games will be a real challenge for their pitching staffs.

Padres and Giants will play two next Friday. Padres’ hope is playoff spot/second place wrapped up by then.

Padres are the home team for the second game of the Friday doubleheader.
It will be interesting to see how they approach one of the doubleheader games from a pitching standpoint ... actually all the pitching for that weekend. Guessing the big three go Fri-Sat-Sun ... but for how long and how best to keep the other arms sharp considering they have Mon-Tues off.

This is expected, but (relatively) great news.  It would have been bad for us to have the doubleheader on the last day of the season.

... starting a 2020 playoffs thread...
