2020 Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 11, 2020, 2:29 pmWith Paddack out of the SP rotation (assuming he is) there really is only one start (next Tuesday vs LAD) that needs to be covered. With all the coming off days ... the other four starters will be lined up to pitch on either normal four days rest or quite a few starts with 5 day rests.
Additionally, if they stay that course .... the 1st round playoffs should start with Lamet in game one then Clevinger in game two.
Actually it may be good timing that Paddack may be shut down ... really would not want the other starters way out of rhythm by having them start pitching on 5 and 6 days rest between starts after a season of a 4 day rest pattern .... then return to the 4 day pattern for the playoffs.
Plus, as he returns, sets-up Paddack to get his work in relief and will be a test how he will be used in the playoffs.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 11, 2020, 4:15 pmSpeaking of 5th starters.....I’d like to see Morejon have the first shot at the #5 spot next season. The way he’s pitched it should be his spot to lose IMO.
It seems they’ve been working hard on “something” in Gores delivery.
It would seem he will at minimum need a couple months in AAA next year.
Would probably be best in Patiño joins him.
Of course depends on what happens in Peoria next spring.

I get that Lamet is our best pitcher, and that Clevinger is the name, and pretty good as well. However, I really think that if I am Tingler going into a playoff series, I would like to separate the similar stuff of Lamet and Clevinger, by pitching Davies in between them. It could really throw off the timing of the opposing hitters, IMO.

Are you under the assumption that the first four next year are Lamet, Clevinger, Davies, Paddock? Leaving one spot available for the best and most ready of Gore, Patino, Morejon, or ????

I would bank on Lamet, Clevinger, and Davies then after that high probability of Paddack (but not a lock). Morejon - Patino - Gore battle for #5 (and if one struggles during the season another is called up .... or if an injury to any of the 5).
With Davies a FA after 2021 and Clevinger a FA after 2022 ... all three (and coming soon Lawson and Weathers) need to get exposure to ML playing time so there is a replacement sequence beyond a raw rookie.

Yes that was my thinking.
But much can change between now and then of course.
Both positively and negatively.
An entire off season and Spring Training can change things.

This was my thinking also.
Two of the three start in AAA with call ups during the season Depending on health and performance of the five.
Hopefully also for the playoffs even if in the Pen.I’m guessing there still won’t be expanded rosters in September going forward?

I get that logic but might be more detrimental to try to juggle the rotation during the remaining games to set that up.
Other factors may include who do you want to pitch game two in a three game series ... best to close it out in two or more importantly get you a win if you lose game one.
Might consider who do you expect to play in that 3 game set ... if it is PHIL ... who has the better chance of success given their line-up.

Since I was not that familiar with Clevinger's pitching ... did a quick research on stuff ... and really not all that similar to Lamet.
Lamet: 47% FB (97 MPH) .... 53% SL (87 MPH)
Clevinger: 40% FB (95 MPH) ... 30% SL (82 MPH) ... 7% CT (88 MPH) ... 13% CB (79 MPH) ... 10% CH (87 MPH)
If anything after seeing Lamet two pitch power stuff ... Clevinger's 5 pitch array should give them fits.
Looks like Davies splitting up Clevinger and Richards might be more valued (once they get to the 5 game series).
Davies: 37% FB (88 MPH) ... 19% CT (87 MPH) ... 3% CB (75 MPH) ... 41% CH (79 MPH)
Richards: 56% FB (95 MPH) .... 36% SL (88 MPH) ... 8% CB (80 MPH)

Quote from fenn68 on September 13, 2020, 8:03 amIf as reported Clevinger and Richards go today ... expect Lamet on Monday and Davies on Tuesday ... Wednesday ?
After the off day IF they go Clevinger (Fri) and Richards (Sat) they have effectively re-set the rotation splitting Clevinger and Lamet (Sun). Off day then Davies (Tue). No need for a #5 and everyone is going on 4 or 5 days rest. (Guessing a bullpen day for the final make-up game on the final weekend.
What that sets-up is Clevinger in game #1 playoffs followed by Richards in game #2. That would have Lamet for game #3 if needed to advance or game #1 of Round #2 vs. LAD. Risk: if Padres lose game #1 ... elimination game with Richards? Not comfortable with Lamet on short rest as a power pitcher (and that usually does not work).
