2020 Season
Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2020, 9:04 amIs Profar earning the full time LF for now?
Consider
350/381/500 ... last 7 games
304/353/522 ... last 15 games
242/311/411 .... last 30 games
plus his defense in LF is good.
Maybe just hot ... maybe helped by the rest of the line-up producing ... maybe putting him in LF and leaving him there (see the Myers thesis) helped ... but the right trend and the production speaks for itself. Yes, well above his history but might help erase some of the pure negative of his bad start to 2020.
As it stands, can't see any reason not to start him in LF over Mateo / Allen given they have done little offensively to earn the spot.

Quote from WindsorUK on September 1, 2020, 10:44 amProfar has impressed me with both his discipline at the plate ( he sees a TON of pitches) and relative ease moving around left field.
I agree with you Fenn, in that this could be The Myers Thesis in action.
No matter how much this game evolves, it's players are still the most superstitious and creatures of habit.
Find these guys their favourite spot AND LEAVE THEM ALONE!!!!!!

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 1, 2020, 1:14 pmWe are in dang good shape when we are talking about our weakest player and saying how great he's been recently.
This team is good enough offensively now that half the lineup could struggle each game out and the other half can win the game on their own.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 1, 2020, 1:23 pmLet's all put our collective minds together and root on the reds to get the #8 seed.
I'd love for the Dodgers to have to face Bauer/Castillo/Gray in that first playoff series over someone like the Brewers,Marlins or even the Cards.
I'd prefer to beat the Dodgers ourselves but the next best thing would be for them to not even get out of the first round.
No offense Skwiggy(if you're lurking).
BTW...where is Ol' Skwig now that we have finally become the competition to the Dodgers we've been promising was coming?

Quote from 84padres on September 1, 2020, 1:43 pmThe biggest concern for our lineup is still leadoff. Grisham has been leadoff for 15 games and in that span his OBA is .288. Not sure who to put there but maybe Profar. Since his 4 for 41 start he has OBA of .374 in 74 at bats. I hate to move him there but Grisham should be more comfortable lower in the order. The best choice would be Cronenworth but too valuable hitting 6 ish, but flip flopping them might be the best choice.

Quote from MrPadre19 on September 1, 2020, 1:51 pmCronenworth is pretty much hitting lefties and righties evenly.
Maybe lead off with Grisham against RH starters and switch with Crone against LH?
Grishams OBP against RH--371
Against LH-.225

We will have to try something, Crone is the best choice but hard to take out of a run producing spot all though in this lineup leadoff is a run producing spot

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2020, 2:01 pmDoes anyone think that Tatis kid could be effective at lead-off? 🙂
========
Sweeney (I think) suggested Tatis back to lead-off and Grisham at #9. Part of the logic was inserting Moreland in the middle of the line-up pushing up Machado / Hosmer to #2/#3.
With a new long 9 hitter line-up ... and maybe the top OPS team in MLB already ... not too concerned. Maybe more risk taking hitters out of their comfort zone in the line-up.

Quote from fenn68 on September 1, 2020, 2:25 pmSept ... just to add some further optimism by looking how the Padres stack up vs other teams in MLB:
1. Offense: #1 in MLB OPS ... and now they upgrade catcher’s offense and probably DH offense. Unbelievably be how quickly they went from one of the worst teams offensively for year to #1.
2. Starting Pitching: #7 in MLB ERA ... and now they add Clevinger and dump the bullpen days.
3. Relief Pitching: #22 in MLB ERA ... add Rosenthal that allow for the others move down to more suitable positions plus Pagan is settling in and in August his ERA has been a better 3.18. Pomeranz / Strahm are dealing from the LH side. Have a lot of others to sort through to put a much better relief corp in September (and the playoffs).
Few teams “have it all” but overall, SD is in a really good position.

And this.... the evil empire (LAD) is still #1 runaway favorite to win the World Series @ 19.2% chance
2nd best odds... SAN DIEGO PADRES! @ 9.7%!
3rd best the other evil empire (Astros) @ 7.2%....
I am NOT counting my chickens, b/c such a weird year, but IF we (& LAD) can survive a 3 game series against .500 ish team that got relatively hot the last 20 games... definitely no given, things are tracking for us to play LAD next in 5 game series.
GO PADRES!
