2020 Season
Quote from Randy Manese on August 14, 2020, 5:34 pmIt's frustrating because Hosmer carries them for a couple games, Tatis for a few more, the pitching for a few but not all the parts are working at the same time. Also, you can see the fatigue set in when you have guys who are virtually playing every inning in every game. If we can get Paddack back on track, we should be able to stay in every game as it seems Tingler and Rothschild have figured out the bullpen pieces for the most part. Without getting much from our catchers, our lack of depth on the bench is telling. For the most part, it is a very young team and that is the most promising part for the future. Still would like to see what we have in Baez and Morejon because we've seen enough of Stammen and Perdomo. Nonetheless, keep healthy and we should be fine for the next 40 games.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 14, 2020, 6:27 pmAfter yesterday’s bad, disgusting, soul crushing defeat to the evil LAD ... looking for an optimistic note to spur us on for the remaining 2/3rds of the season.
It really was rough. Think we're gaining ground & then they show yet again who's boss. But only 12 years of Mookie to go....
Uggh. We are 2 games behind LAD in standings, but they are Net +47 (!) in Run differential... they are still a much better team.
But there's lots of positives: 11-9 @ .550 with each game this year = 2.7 games... translates to "30-24". Sounds better! We're only 4-6 vs LAD & Rox, but 7-3 vs Ariz & SF.
Looking at the League standings by win % this moment: Padres are Tied 5th/6th with Atlanta @ .550 7th is NY Mets @ 9-11, 8th is Dbacks & Reds tied @ 8-11.... last playoff spot is 3 games below .500, and we are 2 above .500
and we've done that DESPITE having played juggernaut LAD 7 times first 20 games; only 3 games vs LAD next 40. Half of our divisional play is done & we're still standing! Still 7 left vs Rox (to determine who's REALLY 2nd best in West), but also 7 vs SF. Then 20 vs AL West: Only 6 against the two "good" teams: A's (13-6) & Astros (8-10). 14 against Rangers, Angels, & Mariners who are a combined 22-34.
We are 1 of 7 teams in MLB to have played 20 games so far. We had only 1 off day the 1st 1/3. This 1/3 we have 2 off days, the last 1/3 we have 3 off days. Besides the obvious benefit of rest, fewer (no?) doubleheaders, etc; this will allow us to potentially shift rotation favorably as needed.
I think we can pencil the LAD & Cubs into the playoffs. We could overtake the Rox, but might have to go 5-2 against them head to head to do so. But they would have to fall apart to the tune of 17-25 the rest of the way or something to miss out on playoffs. That's 3 spots. I'm not buying the Marlins. The Braves have major SP injury issues & are fading. Cardinals worry me, but their just announced "makeup schedule" looks utterly brutal...
Padres are positioned really well, but need to get firing on all cylinders. PLAYOFFS! Let's go!!

Quote from fenn68 on August 15, 2020, 9:52 am2020 apparently is proving the need for those 6 week ST to get into shape. Current players complain, past players complain, media complains, fans complain BUT heard one report that non-COVID related IL stints over similar 3 week starts to seasons are nearing DOUBLE normal.
Minds and the body are not in sync on this I guess.

Quote from WindsorUK on August 17, 2020, 7:09 amEither Tingler knows nothing about baseball( That can't be it!) or because he's got extra bodies down in the bullpen, he's just being lazy( I'm guessing it's this one!)
If he didn't have the 2 or 3 extra pitchers down in the pen, I can't imagine he'd be pulling our best pitchers( read: starters) whilst they're still pitching effectively. Our bullpen has been ATROCIOUS so far this year, and outside of a few wobbles from the rotation, our starters are throwing well. Our front 5 will NOT be getting 30+ starts this year, they will NOT be approaching anywhere near 200 innings(lucky to get 100!) so there is absolutely ZERO reason these young, strong athletes should be limited to 100 pitches per outing.
If we hope to win, we need our best players out on the field as much as possible

Quote from fenn68 on August 17, 2020, 9:18 amReported today, Pham has been diagnosed with a broken hamate bone .... that should end his season.
If they confirm bone chips in the elbow for Yates ... probably out for some time if not for the season (5 weeks to go).

From what I can interpret (and watching the game) .... Richards had 91 pitches already and was starting to clearly get shaky on command so he chose to go to a key RP going forward.
IF Pagan is not effective now .... not sure he will be effective going forward (and not other alternatives) so Padres have a bigger issue in winning games for the season ... Pomeranz will not pitch every day. After those two ... just no reason to think they would be better.
Not just for the pitchers ... but for the position players ... Tingler has (had) a worry about early burnout (overuse) now and have nothing left for the final run. Looking at the incredibly high attrition rate around the ML (nearly double non-COVID IL stints) suggests that players are not fully in shape due to the short ramp up and over-extending them might get the worse outcome for the season.
Padres need the RP to produce to win ... starters alone will not ... so have to use them.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 17, 2020, 10:21 amThe Pads were .500 and even/negative run differential with Yates & Pham.
LAD are best team in NL. Hard to envision Rox, Cubs, At falling out of playoffs barring a collapse (Braves SP?)
Mets, Giants, Pirates all appear to be out.
Leaves 4 spots for these 8 close in record & run differential teams: PADS, Cards, Phils, Nats,Reds, Dbacks, Brewers, Marlins (?)
I think a realistic goal for the Padres this season is getting the 8 seed by .001 Win Pct... I'll be happy if they do that. If they do, could well wind up in a "no pressure/nothing to lose" 3 game series @ LAD.
Seriously, with Closer, 2 other late inning potential pen guys, and a depth guy (Wingenter) all out, it's hard to see where the needed improvement in bullpen comes from. Has to come from within. Maybe Castillo gets back, but really hasn't pitched in MLB in 2 years.

Did he even get hit on the hand?
Looked to me it just happened while swinging?

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 17, 2020, 10:59 amWho takes his roster spot?
Baez or Morejon?
France?
Trammell?
Edit:I just saw at the bottom of this very page that Morejon was recalled yesterday.
I'm excited to see him pitch this year.
But who comes up for Pham?
