2020 Season
Quote from Brian Connelly on July 29, 2020, 2:06 pmNow players have proposed 30-man roster all season & possibility of doubleheaders being only 7 innings; could be all games or just the 2nd. What do you guys think?
On surface it's paying more players more MLB salary without fans to play "less" baseball, so could see owners balking. But it's obvious the # of doubleheaders is going to grow, and "only" having 3 taxi guys to plug in (possibly at "wrong" positions) on a road trip could mess a team up if they were at 26 and suddenly lost say, 4 overnight going into a doubleheader. But on a daily basis, there's a reason it's not 30: we have 1 RP no IP, 1 with 1/3 IP, and a position player with 1 AB. Hard to argue "need" 30 guys with only 60 games total.
I really dislike 2nd doubleheader game being shorter. Be consistent, whatever they do. 8 innings? Allow ties after 9?
Things that would minimize player travel like expanding taxi squad (so not optioning guys up /down on road) might help too, but the Marlins clubhouse sure got wiped out...

Quote from fenn68 on July 29, 2020, 5:25 pmI can see the need to make a more fluid transition between the active roster and the inactive roster.
Maybe still go to 26 "active" at MLB pay but back off the rules on optioning / calling up players who are inactive (at minor league pay). Maybe an "extra" player for double headers ... allowing for putting a player inactive without using an option ... lost of creative ways to keep the roster fresh / healthy without opening up the flood gates of endless pitchers in every game.
Still playing a season is most important ... odd that it may be. So, I am pretty flexible with the construct if I still get entertained.

Quote from fenn68 on August 1, 2020, 8:12 amNot sure about the thinking process in MLB for scheduling game times. No fans in the stands to consider so would think scheduling of times should be done to maximize TV exposure across the country. But NO.
The other day they only had one early game scheduled ... and it was postponed leaving zero TV exposure for the early block.
Noticed today (a Saturday) that they only have one "early game" (10 am Pacific) but no 1:00 games and then roll in a full block at 4:oo Pacific Time. Meanwhile, MLB Network has to "fill" during the day. No way to get full exposure of the sport.
Without fans ... should be easy even at the last moment to move some of the evening starts to afternoons.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 1, 2020, 9:37 amHow “Because Padres” would it be for this season to be cancelled after 30 games with the Padres having the best record in baseball?

OK .... one game scheduled .... rain delay in Detroit.

Only for the 2nd time in his 10 year career, I think.
2020 is a strange year.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 4, 2020, 8:53 amGlad MLB is going with 28 man roster vs 26 rest of the way. 30 was too high, but 26 feels too low in this weird year.
The Taxi squad bumping up from 3 to 5 means it's likely the 2 guys who come off active roster just keep traveling with the team.
But who fills out the 5 man going forward will be interesting to watch. Does Patino, Gore, Morejon "make" this soon when getting close, or keep them at the alternate site to keep making "starts" on a regular basis?

I vote for staying at the alternate site and working with the coaches regularly to be ready for a permanent call up. They are not going to get much workout time on the road with games and focus on keeping the active roster sharp plus probably want to call them up on the Padres own timeline and not because of an immediate emergency.
Sound more like the current active 30 and 3 taxi just get reclassified to 28 active and 5 taxi. Changes to those 33 would be more for cause / need.
