2020 Playoffs

Going to be very interesting how the 5-8th seeds play out.

Miami has 4 games left...1 with Atl and 3 with NYY....tough.

St Louis and Milw. have 5 against each other.

Cin has 3 against Min.

Phil 3 against TB

SFG 1 against Col and 4 against us.

With Atl/Min/TB/NYY having already clinched but still playing for seeding who has the easiest road?

We could literally be playing any one of Mia/Stl/Phi/Cin/Sf in the first round still.

Who you want?

If he is at all near full health (but maybe not ready to start) for the 3 game set ... might just keep him activated in case of a game 3 that needs his quality in long relief. Hopefully in a 3 game set the Padres will never see that 15th pitcher or even a 14th position player.

Round 2 with 5 games in a row ... might need him to be active and "resting" if necessary to be ready for game 5 if needed. Bring game 1 starter back on short rest is not normally a good or effective move. If they have Lamet, Paddack, Davies ... Richards seeming destined for the bullpen ... need a 4th and 5th and one needs to be Clevinger. The other a bullpen day? Hope they win in 3 but if against the LAD ... not likely. If Clevinger is in doubt ... Richards will have to return to starting ... not seeing Morejon or Patino or Lucchesi or ????? holding a starting spot in a 5 game set ... could be "interesting" if this goes to 5 games.

Whomever we can beat.

Leaning towards Miami ... poor AWAY ERA (11th in NL) and average AWAY OPS (8th in NL).

Maybe STL ... poor AWAY OPS (11th in NL) but good AWAY ERA (6th in NL).

Both PHIL and CINN are tricky with their AWAY stats ... PHIL cannot pitch (14th in ERA) but can hit. CINN cannot hit (12th in OPS) but can really pitch.

MILW is in the middle of everything ... so the "balanced" option.

I'm afraid Miami is a long shot to finish 5th seed.

I'd probably rank them to finish 5th as:

Stl

Cin

Phi

Mil

SF

Mia

But,Bauer won't pitch again so Cin doesn't have that going for them against Min.

Who knows really?

1 thing the Padres do have going for them, is they are using this weekend to set up their rotation.  Whomever the 5th seed is, wont have that luxury.  Every team has Mon/Tue off but if StL has to play Monday and use their ace to lock up the 5 seed, could really give the Padres an advantage.

I still think the Padres DONT want Paddack facing the Dodgers unless they have to.  Lamet in game 1, Paddack in 2 and hope for the sweep.  That allows Davies to start Game 1 and Lamet Game 2 against the Dodgers.  Could then decide how healthy Clev is and then decide to pitch Paddack, Clev, Morejon or Richards depending on how the series looks after 2 games.  Obviously thinking ahead but still...

MLB has to LOVE the way the weird season is ending in the NL with 6 teams still having  seeding / playoffs to play for .. plus good match-ups.

Seeding .. Team .... Losses .... Games to Play .... Opponent / winning %

5.  STL ..... 26 .... 6 .... MILW (.482) 4 games and DET on Monday 1 or 2 games

6.  MIA .... 28 .... 3 .... NYY (.561)

7.  CINN .. 28 .... 3 .... MINN (.614)

8.  SF ....... 28 .... 4 .... SD (.607)

=======

9.  PHIL ... 29 .... 3 .... TB (.649)

10. MILW . 29 ... 4 .... STL (.519)

If STL has a bad streak could fall out of the playoffs if the others play well ... MILW could garner the #5 seed ... so could CINN. Then again so could MIA or PHIL (as #2 in East).

Since most of the opponents are already in ... even if they are good teams ... will they playing their “A TEAM” or just setting up for the playoffs?

Philly's bullpen makes me drool.  Cincy's SP would REALLY rather avoid in a 3 game series.  On principal, I would like Padres to eliminate San Fran now while they can 🙂

Luckily, Twins are now sitting as AL Central winner & the #2 seed; with CWS & Indians right there.  They'll be playing to win until they have that position locked up.  2 vs. 7 is way better opponent matchup than 3 vs 6 in AL.  Rays (#1) & even more NYY (trying for #4: Home field) will play to win until they're in/out of their respective goals.

In NL 5-8 all have warts, so not much difference, plus can't predict anyway.

I think Cardinals wind up with #5.  When does it get decided if they play Monday?  If they do play 2, that will be 25 (!) games in 19 days with none off for the Cards.... 6 doubleheaders.  Good thing MLBPA's 1st concern is player safety!

It sure would be nice for our offense to return for a couple games before the playoffs start.

I know I’d feel better if we don’t have 4-5 guys slumping into the post season.

Tatis-Grisham-Cronenworth-Nola-Moreland....am I missing anyone?

I don’t like the way we are limping down the stretch.  There are red flags all over the field right now.

OMG!

Sure looked like I saw Castro mouth the word “blister”?

Of course I could be completely wrong.

It is so freakin Padres that we would lose our top 2 starters 5 days before the playoffs start.
