2020 Playoffs
Quote from LynchMob on September 16, 2020, 12:17 pmQuote from fenn68 on September 16, 2020, 9:45 amSo a good chance we see some extra bats on the 28 and a few less pitchers for the initial 3 game set. Two days off prior and 3 days off after (if it goes three) will allow for maximum use of the rested pen and allow for maximum recovery time.
"extra bats" ... Pham + Campusano + who else?

Hosmer ... they just added Mejia and sent Almonte out.
If they keep Mejia and Ona up ... then add back Pham and Hosmer ... +2 position players and -2 pitchers. Campusano?

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 16, 2020, 2:04 pmIt could help in 2021 if Mejia still has an option left. Don't think they would have brought him back with only 10 games left if they planned to send him back down. Doesn't mean he's a lock for playoff roster, but I'd be surprised if Campusano made it over him unless Mejia goes like 1-17 with 12 K's. Think Campusano's briefly open window closed with the sprained wrist.

Sounds right. Let him stay on the active for the remainder of the season ... preserve to option ... don't activate him for the playoffs (if not needed).
Just not sure why they were compelled to remove him from the IL even if basically recovered ... maybe just being honest.

Because they can get him some AB's in regular season. Even if he were not on roster for playoffs, Pads would definitely turn to Mejia first if an injury happened to Nola or Castro in the playoffs. If they don't recall him now, he would be coming into playoffs completely cold after 1.5 months+ of not playing "real" games.
If he's 100% healthy & getting back in a groove hitting @ Alt site, it's entirely possible he is on playoff roster. Especially the first series.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 17, 2020, 11:19 amWith Garrett Richards pen appearance yesterday, the Doubleheader @ SF official on 9/25, and working backwards from the now announced playoff schedule, here's what I've got
- 9/18 "@"/vs SEA Paddack "Extra" rest off short start (ankle)
- 9/19 "@"/vs SEA Clevinger +1 day rest
- 9/20 "@"/vs SEA Lamet +1 day rest
- 9/21 OFF
- 9/22 vs LAA Davies +2 days rest
- 9/23 vs LAA Paddack Normal rest (or G. Richards "Extra" rest)
- 9/24 OFF
- 9/25 @ & "vs" SF 1) Clevinger +1 day rest 2) Lamet Normal rest Both: 7-inning games
- 9/26 @ SF G. Richards &/or Bullpen game (&/or Paddack "Extra" rest)
- 9/27 @ SF Davies Normal rest
- 9/28 OFF
- 9/29 OFF
- 9/30 Game 1 Clevinger or Lamet Normal rest
- 10/1 Game 2 Lamet or Clevinger +1 day rest
- 10/2 Game 3 Davies Normal rest
Paddack has to show he's both healthy & effective tomorrow, to get the next "regular rest" start on 9/23. COULD give that start to Richards, which would put Paddack @ 9/26. More "pros" than "cons" to weird end of season schedule; the off day "sandwich" around the 2 games vs LAA allows both Clevinger & Lamet to pitch on the doubleheader day & be on normal rest or better for the Best of 3 series in NL. That extra day off before NL starts really helps! Schedule & timing with Paddack's ankle more than Richards' results pretty much forced Padres hand here to shift Richards to pen. Better to experience it now for first time ever than in playoffs.
I like Lamet getting +1 rest day with his power arsenal, so I would go Clevinger Game 1. Clevinger & Davies fine on normal rest; plus likely shorter starts that last series if we've secured the #4 spot by then. GO PADRES!!!

Quote from Randy Manese on September 19, 2020, 12:57 amWith the advantage of seeing Paddack pitch today, looks like he is a lock to go on 9/23. For the double-header on 9/25, my guess is Clevinger goes in one game and it's basically a bull-pen game (could bring back Lucchesi as the 29th person) with Lamet going on 9/26 instead. I think they want to maintain the rhythm of Clevinger followed by Lamet the next day. For sure they'll bring back Strahm on the first eligible day (9/22?) to get him a couple of appearances before the playoffs. Likewise, Richards is likely to be worked in to 2 innings or less to get him used to coming in as a relief pitcher at least 3 times in the next 8 games to keep him sharp. Assuming the Padres clinch this weekend, it will just be a matter of juggling the relief pitchers, to ensure none get overused - this might entail sending some pitchers down that have options but wouldn't ordinarily be sent down. My understanding is that playoff rosters can be set before every series, so there is no minimum 10 days off a roster after 9/27.
The interesting part is what happens after the wild card series. Do we dare project getting into the Division and League Championship series? I think the Padres have as good a chance as anybody and they have the advantage of having played (and quite well at that) in the Globe Life park and not the bandboxes of many NL East/Central teams. Let's take it one game/series at a time! Go Padres!

Quote from fenn68 on September 19, 2020, 10:52 amI can see the advantage of Clevinger and Lamet in the 7 inning games vs. SF (Fri). Clevinger would then comeback in Round 1 on normal rest and Lamet with an extra day and probably the pen would not be used much. Then go all out with the pen on Sat and Sun (pull Davies early) ... the full pen gets work to keep sharp in advance of two full off days and with only some (hopefully) getting used on day 1 of the playoffs. Can be detrimental for an RP not to get into games (especially tough situations) without pitching for 3-4 days.
Would not be surprised if on Saturday we see 9 RP in one inning stints ... and after Davies on Sunday ... another run of RP for an inning (or less).

Quote from Ben Davey on September 19, 2020, 11:01 amHaving two "aces" I wouldnt be surprised if the rotation gets juggled around so Lamet starts game 1, and if we win, Davies in game 2. That way if its a win, Clevinger goes in Game 1 of the next series. Then you would have Paddack (2), Lamet (3) Davies (4) in the next series with Lamet and Davies on normal rest. (You can also flip Lamet and Clev)
With Richards and Morejon in the pen, bullpen days shouldnt be difficult, especially considering the double header is only 7 (Morejon 3, Richards 3).

This sounds good, but with 3 off days before the next series for the NL (4 off days if wrapped up in 2 games), it's not necessary to "save" an ace for Game 3 WC / Game 1 Div series... As long as they go Games 1 & 2 of WC round, they could also go games 1 & 2 of Div series round each on an extra day rest.
Davies looks like 9/22 on 2 extra days rest, then 9/27 last game short start presumably on normal rest. IF a game 3, he would be on normal rest, or would have the option of turning to Paddack.
