Maybe a logistics issue with hotels and ballparks for eight teams in one location.
IF so, advantage for the Padres to finish as the 4th seed (vs. lower) and they can stay for round 1 at PETCO and avoid travel. Especially if, as it is now, their opponent would be PHIL and they would be forced to travel from PHIL to SD. Maybe a small plus but still logically a plus.
Can they not finish as the 2 seed, if they remain with the second best record in the NL?
Or are division winners automatically the top 3?
Division winners get the top 3 seeds automatically ... so likely the best for the Padres is #4 seed (baring that unlikely catch of the LAD).

Quote from fenn68 on September 14, 2020, 6:47 amMaybe just a moment in time but a playoff oddity if the season ended today:
AL matchups:
CWS (#1) vs. CLEV (#8) ... AL Central match-up
TB (#2) vs. NYY (#7) ... AL East match-up
OAK (#3) vs. HOU (#6) ... AL West match-up
NL match-ups:
LAD (#1) vs. SF (#8) ... NL West match-up
ATL (#2) vs. PHIL (#7) .. NL East match-up
CUBS (#3) vs. STL (#6) ... NL Central match-up
Not sure about the probability of ending up all the top seeds set to play a team from their own Division in round #1. From a TV perspective .... round 2 would have a cross-country array of teams.

Quote from fenn68 on September 15, 2020, 11:25 amMLB just announced its playoff schedule.
If the Padres go all the way ... all their games will be at Globe Life ballpark in Arlington Texas ... Round 2 through the World Series.
NL Round 1 starts on Wednesday, Sept 30 (AL starts on Tuesday) ... that may make some difference on how the Padres use their SP in the SF series to get the best aligned for the 3 games set Wed-Thurs-Fri.
In Round 1 (3 games) .. Round 2 (5 games) ... Round 3 (7 games) ... NO off days during the series ... since they blast through should impact the roster design heading into each series and give a bit of an advantage to a deeper SP rotation and heavier use of the pen. Not sure how they will handle the World Series for off days or days between rounds.
World Series starts on October 20th.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 15, 2020, 11:58 amSo no home field advantage even in that 1st round? Sigh.
I get what they're trying to do, but by not having the 1st round at the "true" home fields, I REALLY think they're actually increasing, not decreasing the potential spread of Covid.... 16 teams between how many stadiums? If it's not at least 8, aren't they sharing clubhouses, etc.

No, Padres do get the 3 game round one in SD before shuffling off the Arlington. My initial error.

Quote from fenn68 on September 15, 2020, 12:13 pmLooks as though the will have 3 "off days" to get from SD to Arlington before Round 2 games. Then 1 "off day" before the NLCS and 1 "off day" before the World Series. World Series WILL have off days after game 2 and game 5.

Awesome! OK. THAT makes more sense.... from a Safety, but also selfish "we deserve it" outlook.
But I'm NOT assuming we have the #4 (or #1 🙂 seed locked down until we do, even though it would be hard to imagine being in a better position this late in a season. However, 32 wins to me does it as far as reaching the playoffs, even though I know it's not official... The # 5-8 teams would already be in anyway. Talking about a current 9-10 seed overtaking us, along with everyone else not faltering.

Quote from fenn68 on September 15, 2020, 1:24 pmSince the round one is 9/30 - 10/2 ... and logically they would want their starters on “normal rest” with a rotation (as it is now) of Clevinger, Lamet, Davies ... should set them up for Fri-Sat-Sun starts in SF on the final weekend .. maybe not all out full starts but enough to keep the sharp ... all would then get to round 1 with “normal” 4 rest days for their start playoff start.
Clevinger and Lamet would be set for the second round with 5 days rest. If the Padres win round 1 in two ... Davies would not have pitched for 10 days for game 3. Would the Padres move Davies to game 1 and lag the others to 6 days rest? Going to be some difficult rotation decisions for Tingler (and every manager) to determine which of their pitchers can best handle non-normal patterns.
Probably really want Clevinger and Lamet to go in games #1 and #2 in the NLCS so they are available (if needed) in games #6 and #7. So, maybe that impact their usage in round 2?
========
I guess they could go with Clevinger - Lamet - Davies on 5 days rest for the series on the 18th-19th-20th .... then sit out for 7 days rest to return for the SF series on the 25th-26th-27th ... setting up Round 1 on 4 days rest.
That would leave open (for a different starter) tomorrow and the two game set on the 22nd and 23rd. With all the surrounding off days ... a good chance to workout the bullpen to sort out who they prefer to have active for Round 1.

Quote from Brian Connelly on September 16, 2020, 9:24 amThere is a LOT to unpack from the playoff format & rules.
But my #1 question is: Can anyone confirm that teams CAN re-set their Active roster (still 28?) for each series?
What Pads or any team looks like in a 3-game series would be very different than a 5 or 7; especially with no off days once each series starts.

Have not heard anything that suggests they can't set new playoff rosters (at 28) prior to each series and saw one write-up that confirms it ... so with 99.44% confidence I say yes. Basically the existing rule (except with the 28 roster size).
Note cannot make a changes during any of the individual series .... unless for an injury and approved by the commissioner.
So a good chance we see some extra bats on the 28 and a few less pitchers for the initial 3 game set. Two days off prior and 3 days off after (if it goes three) will allow for maximum use of the rested pen and allow for maximum recovery time.
