2020 In Season Trade ideas
Quote from Randy Manese on August 31, 2020, 10:14 amSo we've replaced bullpen day with Clevinger; replaced the duo of Naylor/France at DH with Moreland; overturned 2/3's of the catching squad by getting Nola and Castro; and added at least one serious bullpen piece in Rosenthal. Nola was dynamic in San Diego when the Mariners played us - thought we was better than Lewis or Seager in his approach. Castro is supposed to be LH hitting Hedges defensively , so we apparently didn't lose much in getting these players. What's left to do? A LF or even more bullpen help? Players I will miss most are probably Munoz and Cantillo, but there are so many arms in the system that could develop as well as these two. Furthermore, we still have Gore, Patino, Morejon, Baez, Weathers and Lawson as "prospects" to possibly move into the rotation if needed; several of these will probably be bullpen pieces going forward.

Rumor is negotiating for Josh Hader.
Why would the Brewers trade him?

I assume only if they can get more than he's worth?
He's controlled for 3 more seasons so doesn't make much sense to me either...but he's at $4 mil this year with raises coming.
So there's that?

I would have called that a media rumor ... but it has been around for a week or so ... so maybe some legs.
Why trade him ... he is about to earn some serious money going forward (and MILW is not the most cash secure team) plus dropping below .500 still may get them into the playoffs in the NL Central ... just not coming together as a good team that would go far.
Just may put him out there to get that big haul for the future ... and save some money.
For reference he is only 26 has 3 years more control (that is appealing) but is sitting with a $4MM base now and going to Arb 2 - Arb 3 - Arb 4. Given his track record going to be big money for a RP that could blow out his arm.

Deal includes Cantillo/Hedges/Miller!
That is a lot!
No future in SD for Arias, Miller in the INF ... Cantillo far out (and behind Weathers, I guess). Naylor was easy to let go. Quantrill looked to be destined for RP and Padres added Adams plus pieces in their own system (Preller finds RP anywhere).
A lot of names ... a lot of talent ... but no future in SD. Give volume get quality.
Exactly. "Quantity" trade. From a current MLB roster perspective, it's:
- our 50% starting C who's defensively elite but batting <.160 and was not almost certain not to return next season, with the arrival of Nola.
- an up/down platoon LF/1B/DH blocked at LF /1B/DH next year
- and a quasi SP/RP with no defined role in pen being pushed down depth chart as both a SP & RP by other guys.
Arias, Cantillo, & Miller are the consensus #8, 11, & 12 prospects in our (formerly) elite system. Arias probably just outside the Top 100 and is the biggest "get" for Cleveland. Pretty obviously blocked in SD at both SS & 2B now.
Cantillo & Miller subjectively outside the top 200 MLB prospects. Miller more a bat first utility guy also blocked from his possible ceiling as a MLB starting 2B. I lived in Hawaii, really like & rooting for Cantillo, but he is wildly overrated on this board. I really hope I'm wrong, but his limited stuff profiles to something like a Lucchesi. Weathers velo way up to 95-96 is the prospect we didn't want to lose. With the mass system exodus, he's a likely top 5 next year.
We get a good, cheap, controllable for 2+ years SP. Now have a GOOD 1-5 rotation. No more 2 IP Bullpen days from the #5 spot. Perfect "SP ladder" with 1 of these 5 guys hitting FA each of the next 5 seasons. With: Gore, Patino, Morejon, Baez, Lucchesi (for now, soon: Weathers) to compete for at least) 1 opening per year. Can't be any other team 10-11 deep in SP like this.
The increased opportunity for Quantrill, Naylor plus the sheer # of guys means Cleveland is likely to wind up happy.

If it is going to cost one of Gore-Patino-Abrams-Campusano it is not happening.
It only happens if MILW works off the rest of the prospect options ... Preller now not under real pressure to make this deal .. ball in MILW court. Same goes for Lynn.

Quote from fenn68 on August 31, 2020, 10:50 amNo idea if Pham will make a showing in 2020 but assuming he does not ... and assuming Mejia injury is not severe .. might the Padres give him some reps at the alternate site in the OF?
Only other position player on the 40 man at the alternate site is Almonte (not a great option) and almost zip ML ready in the non-roster group.
Injuries do happen ... INF injury probably pulls either Mateo or Profar back to the INF adding a need in the OF. If an OF injury clearly a need. Mejia has been out there before and probably is as good defensively as Almonte plus he can be the insurance at catcher.
Just a hedge on a potential future problem. As it stand, an injury gets Mejia back up in some role over Almonte in my view.
