Probably a bit optimistic.

Don't think the PTNL can be on the 40 man roster. Most likely some non-roster minor leaguer not in the 60 pool.

Quote from MrPadre19 on August 29, 2020, 2:33 pmHopefully the PTBNL doesn’t hurt.....Olivares is a good get for KC for 1 month of a good Reliever.
But also smart move for Padres considering our current situation....with both playoffs looming and need in Pen.

Quote from Randy Manese on August 29, 2020, 2:42 pmI thought the player had to be in the 60 player pool. If not, we have a slew of players down in El Paso, like Nix or Kennedy or Evan Miller, who might interest them. Otherwise, got Radke, Vosler or Mejias-Brean that could be useful.

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 2:43 pmGiven the PTNL is NOT in the 60 pool where all the top prospect reside ... not worried. Maybe someone I like with upside (but a long shot) or one of the many 17-18 year olds still 5 years out.
For a quality playoff run ... and to fill a real need ... a small price to pay since Olivares is not likely to unseat Grisham or Myers over the next two years. If Pham is back in 2021, at best Olivares is a bench option with the Padres.

Quote from Brian Connelly on August 29, 2020, 2:58 pmYESSSSS!!!! I realize we're all pretty rusty experiencing this, but this is what a trade looks like FOR a contending team.
I really like Olivares (had him #13), but he is our #14 Consensus prospect. That is well outside the top 200 prospects in MLB. Grisham has locked down CF. Olivares was briefly a 5th OF, kind of squeezed off roster by 3 out of options utility guys... but not quite there. Likely ceiling is platoon starter. Likely outcome a MLB 4th/5th OF. Possible outcome "4A" up/down guy.
The PTBNL at BEST could be our #18 Consensus prospect (Hidson Potts). I suspect it's a good deal lower than that, maybe a #30-40 range young Intl P or something. But even if it were Potts, I would still be OK with that.
As FENN pointed out, don't need him to MAKE the playoffs... but his addition plus (hopefully) Pomeranz' healthy return instantly takes Padres from being one of the 12-15 best teams in MLB , to one of the top 8: IMO a legit World Series contender.
Lance Lynn would push it up to top 4-5, AND help solve a big innings problem next season...
KUDOS TO PRELLER AND FOWLER/SEIDLER/OWNERSHIP for being bold & going for it!

Quote from WindsorUK on August 29, 2020, 3:11 pmRosenthal had some big save numbers in St. Louis a few years back. Hopefully he can recapture that late inning magic in SD.

He clearly was doing it in KC this season ... one of the best closers in MLB this year. Needs to keep in his KC form.
Should really help the rest of the pen with both Pomeranz and Rosenthal at the end .... Pagan and Strahm can do the set-up ... allowing a more mix and match in the 6th/7th of Quantrill /Johnson / Stammen / Wall. Then earlier as needed Guerra - Perdomo - Patino - (or whomever survives).

Quote from fenn68 on August 29, 2020, 4:12 pmTwo of the worst RP corps are Cubs (#27) and PHIL (#30) .... both contenders. Guessing neither had the assets (or will) to out bid the Padres for Rosenthal.
Could the Padres enter the picture and offer one of their marginal RP to those teams and still have that as an upgrade for the buyer? Maybe open some roster flexibility with a RP that can't be optioned, maybe save some 2021 payroll, maybe get a fringe piece (non pitcher) to create a backfill if needed?
Now ... we all think Stammen is over the hill BUT if you parse his 2020 work:
overall: 14 appearances (13 2/3rd innings) with an uninviting 12 earned runs allowed ... that is very bad ... but
3 appearances (1 2/3rd innings) he yielded a massive 11 earned runs (Tingler kept him him to take a pounding) ... so
in the other 11 appearances (12 innings) he has just yielded 1 earned run ... that is very good.
Would a team desperate for RP support look past those 3 abysmal showings and embrace the 11 quality appearances? Of course, the Padres may embrace them too and not want to market him.
Maybe Preller a buyer and seller be!
