2020 In Season Trade ideas

PreviousPage 15 of 43Next

Still wondering what AJ's ideas are right now.

Does he take a shot and trade guys just for a rental reliever?

Does he only go after relievers with more than one year control?

Does he just punt the Pen and go for mor eoffense or a Starter?

If so....who?

Lance Lynn wouldn't be a bad target. He isn't flashy or dominant but he's the kind of guy that gives you

"at least" 6 innings every start. That can help the bullpen almost as much as adding an arm to it.

OR....do we add a LF or DH that puts our offense into even another gear and just hope the Pen has straightened themselves out as they have appeared to do recently?

All I know is I'm on Pins and Needles here waiting to find out!

Clevinger is who I "want" him to go after!

I would imagine both Clevinger and Plesac are available.

Neither one of the dudes will be able to walk back into that locker room without some major penance being paid.

AJ would have to check with Hosmer and Machado( and probably even Tatis) to see if they'd be accepting of either pitcher.

Should be an interesting few days.

I'm sure the Indians know they would be better off waiting till the offseason to move them also.

But...the longer they wait the longer that situation stays over their heads.

So no telling if they can/will move them now or if they will wait.

If anything Cleveland will be low balled on any offer now ... if there are that many offers.

From some of the pieces I have seen the actions / comments by Plesac and Clevinger not only have created some animosity with the Cleveland teammates ... but in the brotherhood of ML players they have also creates a ton of animosity. Same goes for GMs and owners, too much at stake from an overall baseball season to basically “condone” their actions by dealing for them.

Any potential “buyer” has to be very comfortable that adding one of them will not have a bad impact with the team and given only a month to go ... have to get that add (and the team) going immediately. A lot of issues to make this work for 2020.

Not getting from any source that the standard “they are young and deserve a second chance” “what do you expect from a young player” ... and the like to justify their reinstatement which is really because they have talent.

Almost a case for buyers and Cleveland just punt until this winter.

Since Preller is capable of making more than one trade ... besides the obvious RP discussion ... might see the value of a LF / DH veteran bat ... maybe just a rental but would not be a major hurdle to acquire an upgrade for the current 2020 crop (not that expensive of a move). Consider in 2020 two of these players have to play in each game:

  1. Profar: 105 PA .... 193/308/341  ... 84 wRC+ ... -0.7 dWAR (note really low BABIP)
  2. France: 42 PA ... 263/333/447 ... 114 wRC+ ... -0.9 dWAR
  3. Naylor: 31 PA ... 276/323/345 ... 86 wRC+ ... -0.4 dWAR
  4. Mateo: 8 PA ... 000/000/000 ... -100 wRC+ ... -0.1 dWAR
  5. Olivares: 36 PA ... 176/222/294 ... 40 wRC+ ... -2.3 dWAR
  6. Almonte: 10 PA ... 111/200/111 ... -5 wRC+ ... -0.5 dWAR

Not UGLY offensively but if you factor in they need to cover a sub-optimal offense out of the catcher slot ... maybe need to do better and not rely for the other 6 starters carrying the load for the full season and more importantly in the playoffs. Not a lot of experience in that group (except for Profar). Nothing really sitting at the alternate site ... it is worse if there is an injury to anyone on the active 13 position players.

Not sure who may be out there but a veteran who has been through the playoff wars who is still contributing ... rental would be fine and likely only cost a very fringe prospect.

**** forgot Garcia ... but theme remains

Boston has Pillar (OF) FA after the season and Moreland (DH) on club option of 2021

SF has Flores (UTIL) under control for 2021 at $3MM

Texas has Frazier (UTIL) club option for 2021

LAA has LaStella (UTIL) FA after the season

Just examples of veteran players hitting well this season and with some time playing in pennant runs / playoffs.

PTNL/Cash Considerations type pick-ups to save the seller some money. Maybe a Vosler / Mejia-Breen / Eickhoff type player.

I like the Boston duo and Frazier and one or more may be available.  Don't think Angels will part with La Stella (he was an all-star last year) and Flores is probably more valuable to SF than anything we can give them; they'll just exercise their team option.  In order, I'd seek out Pillar (because he plays OF), Moreland (LH hitter but limited to DH/1b), then Frazier, who is a lot like France but a great veteran to have down the stretch.  Why not all 3?  Send Naylor and France back to alternate training site, release Mateo.  Bench/starting lineup becomes immediately more potent/reliable.  It may, however, take more than a Vosler/Mejia-Brean/Eickhoff type player to get any of these guys, especially Moreland.  Maybe an on the current roster player plus another for the Boston duo?

Eickhoff just outright off the 40 man.  Something brewing?  Is Gore ready to come up?

Have to think Padres announce something before tomorrow’s game.

Gore, maybe ... trade using a non-roster player (making a need for a 40 man slot), maybe ... adding a non-roster player from the alternate site, maybe. Interesting he was also dropped from the 60 man pool (with space available). Maybe he just wanted to be done with the season or was not pitching well at the alternate site.

One other possible spin ... Torrens ends up on the concussion IL ... Mejia is not ready to return ... Padres add Rivas to the 40 man as the back-up catcher.

The Torrens thing is a good point.

I could be totally wrong, but I dont see the Padres making a move, unless Pomeranz injury is worse than expected.

Here is my rationale

  1. You can only trade people on the 60 man pool, most of which are top prospects or meh players.
  2. Barring a miracle, Padres cant add salary for next year so while I would love a JD Martinez, it doesnt seem likely
  3. Unless you give up HUGE to get an ace (Bauer, Clevinger) are you going to get someone better than Paddack/Lamet/Davies/Richards?  Like would it be worth giving up an Owen Miller for a Lance Lynn to take a couple of starts away from Morejon/Quantril then not pitch in postseason.
  4. The bullpen has pitched a LOT better.  Tim Hill last week 3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 5 K.  Guerra, Patino, Johnson, all look better.  If you think Pom will be good to come off IL on Friday, is this still a big need, given that there are very few sellers, and would probably have to overpay for something really good (Rosenthal).

IF the Padres make a trade, it would not shock me if it was something like Lucchesi for a reliever.  While I would love to see the Padres get Whit Merrifield or Mike Trout (got to love Twitter), Preller and co know whether or not Pham will be back this year, and if they believe in Naylor/France as the DH
