Logged on just to say SICK!

Glad it's done!   Not my $, so I don't care, but not terribly surprising to see Boras kill Pads for every last penny and force us to pay a 350K+/- overage penalty ...  on the same day Ron Fowler states Padres are losing > 100 MM "cash on cash" this year.  Boras' guy was the last one unsigned, with no one else (i.e. rounds 11+) we could possibly spend any of our pool $ on.

Very similar to what happened last year with Hudson Head.  ... it's Fair to question Preller's approach here

.... one of his worst all time moves was paying washed up Phil Hughes 7.5 MM for 20 mediocre RP appearances just to also get a 800K+ Competitive Balance pick he spent on a guy not ranked in the top 200 draft prospects that year (Grant Little).   The point is, he spent 7.5MM to get <1 MM in additional draft pool $... which he used 99% of on the guy he drafted (i.e. did NOT use the $ to go overslot elsewhere).  There's no way to interpret THAT but Preller paid an extra 7.5 MM for a so far very mediocre (as projected by MLB.com) late 2nd round draft pick... on top of the 800K bonus Little got.  I get having a larger pool of draft $ has a value that goes beyond the actual $ amount you gained... but it's pretty obvious it's not worth THAT much.

Overriding point:  Preller does sometimes seem to overvalue draft picks & pool $ relative to others.  Head & now Wilcox do have to turn into something or Preller's just getting worked over by Boras

$ aside, I could not be happier with the Padres 2020 draft.  Preller played it REALLY well & turned a 1st round comp balance pick into at least 2 (maybe 3) 1st round grade picks.  Subtle moves too, like picking an arrow up, ultra-young, little known LHP in 5th round instead of wasting the pick on a 20K non-prospect & handing more $ to Hassell/Wilcox.  The $ aspect of draft was a lot like 2019; with a record over slot 3rd round pick.  But in QUALITY it most resembles 2017.  None of these guys likely to be system #1's/Top 5 in MLB prospects like Gore, but in 2017 the top 4 picks were also all in MLB.com's top 100 draft prospects:  Gore #4, Campusano #64, (Bust/released) Mason House #83, & Hunt #90.  2020:  Hassell #16, Wilcox #23, Lange #57, & Caissie #75.  If in 3 years Pads have 2 of the 4 in top 5 prospects & another solidly in top 30, they'll be very happy.

Going heavy HS & youth was a really smart move; I really think teams that slanted towards collegiate players due to COVID took a sucker bet; getting older players who missed almost all of their Jr. Yr AND their 1st pro year, AND into a troubled Minor Leagues likely to lose the short season level many collegians start at, AND the looming possibility of even more lost development time if there is a strike/lockout with CBA negotiations.  They will be under immense pressure to get to MLB before they are "too old".   Pads by contrast spent only 80K of 11MM+ on College Jr's (plus undrafted).

Also feel the draftees were EXACTLY what our system needed:  Big strong high velo RH SP's, and young strong-armed athletic LH OF.  The abundance of LH OF's added at all levels from MLB down to Draft/Intl signees in the last year opens the door to move guys like Naylor & Ornelas to move to 1B, which is the system's biggest hole.  Also acknowledges that 2 spots in top 4 of order will be RH Machado & Tatis for forseeable future; the LH lineup balance eventually has to come from the OF.  If they "hit" on 1 of the 2 RHP & LH OF they will have done very well.  Almost every team's 2020 Farm will be better than 2019, due to short season = few guys graduating, but with projecting our top 4 picks to: #6-7, #10-11, #15-16, & #25 in CURRENT system pretty easily, don't see how Padres aren't at least a Top 5 system again.

I bet it's been reported and I missed it ... when can we expect Justin Lange to pitch?

Padres report very little ... so have to guess he is in extended ST (not on any full season roster).

Sort of depends on Lange’s work in AZ and how the pitchers in LE are doing. If he is doing well in AZ ... could see him “promoted” to LE at some point but if not we should see him in late June with the AZ league starts.

Although Lange is a top prospect ... Padres have some other prospects in still in AZ that may be the first promotion shot while they work with Lange in a more controlled environment to refine is stuff before hitting full season ball.

All I know about Lange is a big FB but little on his other stuff and control ... plus they may have an innings target with him being so young and with little workload history that can be achieved if he begins his games in June.

No rush on a 19 year old with other prospects who have been in the system longer needing to get their shot. Same logic probably surrounds Haynes out of last year’s draft.

It doesnt look like we have started a 2021 draft thread yet, so I will stick this question in here for now.

Just saw a report on MLBTR, that both highly touted RHSPs Gunnar Hoglund and Jaden Hill will both now have TJ surgery. Do you think Preller pulls a Quantril pick again,  and pulls the trigger on what people thought would be a top 10 pick, and save some cash to overpay a 2nd or 3rd round pick?

Not a huge fan of the idea, but Prelller has gone that route before, and from a "talent at the spot in draft perspective" it does make some sense, so it's definitely possible.  Those guys won't have any negotiating leverage.

Pretty good chance Preller takes that route IF they fall that far down. Hoglund was the higher rated (Top 10ish) with a very good mix ... and given the fact that TJ is common .... I could see a lot of teams before the Padres taking that route ... better odds he succeeds after TJ than a "typical" late 1st rounder. With Hill ... big FB but was projected in the late first round before the TJ (and everyone these days has a big FB) so he could be still around.
