Almanzar looks bigger, yea! I remember seeing him and Lopez and Melean playing for Dust Devils and they were clearly ... undersized.

- Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe have both been out of the Padres’ lineups over the last few days, though manager Andy Green told Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune and other reporters that the two players “are getting a little bit of an extended blow” due to “just general tiredness.” Neither Reyes or Renfroe are expected to miss much more time, leaving the Padres still to deal with a crowded outfield situation as Opening Day approaches.

Quote from fenn68 on March 18, 2019, 8:46 amNot a defensive 1st guy but more of a plus / minus on both the player and the line-up. A couple more observations from yesterday's game:
1. Maybe the obvious ... Naylor has moved from a poor defensive OF to a danger to his CF ... he nearly knocked out Reed with a right cross to the head trying to catch a ball Reed was zeroing in on. He was so focused on tracking down the ball he was clearly unaware of where his CF was. Reed had to leave the game.
2. Myers is not taking charge in CF ... something that is expected of a good CF. First, Padres are apparently postponing him deeper in CF (suggesting his issues in 2015 were related to being postponed to far in) so when a high pop into short CF happened ... the SS was going out full bore but not really getting close .... clearly see Myers pull up prematurely (I guess to avoid any collision) resulting in the ball dropping. Second, (have see this a few time this SP) on a deep ball to left center, Myers pulled up short of the wall allowing a hit rather than aggressively try for the play.
I am not convinced the hoped for benefit of more offense from a Renfroe - Myers over a Myers - Margot alignment will offset the defensive give away. Padres need to score yes but need to stop the opposition from scoring ... so how to project the plus / minus. With young pitching, are they impacted more by failing defense behind them?
If I wanted to sit Margot, might be more inclined to go with a Myers - Cordero combo ... still bad CF defense but better use of a LHH vs. RHP (about 75% of the time) and keeps Myers in his better position in LF. Green did say (although probably PR for now) he would have zero issue with Cordero going vs. LHP. At least in 2019 the Padres would be going with an upside play in Cordero not a fading prospect in Renfroe.

I saw that and just shook my head that two ... supposedly fit athletes in competition for ML positions would be so tired after one month of ST to justify "a little bit of an extended blow" ... can't wait until we get to the heat of summer!
Odd that is not an issue requiring "an extended blow" to the rest of the team. Could see a day off but "extended"? Maybe the excuse was just poorly worded ... or (conspiracy theory) there is more going on were the Padres don't want them in the line-up.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 18, 2019, 9:48 amI saw the play in Left Center that Myers pulled up on...at the time I said to myself,"Good, don't get hurt".
Now if it happens during the 162 that's a different matter.
Still don't want anyone missing time just for one out but you gotta make the play first...worry about injury second.
Maybe he has been told to not throw himself around out there in ST?

Quote from sportwarrior on March 18, 2019, 3:01 pmWell, according to Dennis Lin we're still engaged with the Indians on Trevor Bauer and Corey Kluber. Not entirely surprising, but certainly worth noting. The asking price has apparently come down, but not to what the Padres are comfortable with.
Personally, I'd rather go get Gio and wait for the rest of the rotation to mature. Or even go sign Keuchel for 3/45 or whatever. I'm not super interested in sending prospects away for vets just yet. Especially not Bauer, who is a sh*thead.

Have some wordy comments on the "Opening Day Line-up" tred .... but agree especially on avoiding Bauer.
Gio looks like working on a deal with the NYY (and that is getting rip by some NY media / fans). No idea what is going on with Keuchel but has to be holding out for a lot more than $45MM/3 or he would have signed by now. Last I read he wanted more years and a key factor and wanted to be on a contender. Given his diminishing stats ... good luck.
As for Kluber ... just depends on the prospects ... if they are the "elite" just say NO .... if they are good but not projected to be much more than that in the ML it is a MAYBE. I would not be crushed if the A.Allen, Quantrill, Baez, Lawson, Naylor level of prospects are in play along with Renfroe and maybe another ML OF or RP.
Every move is a gamble but 3 years of Kluber (the last two are on club options if he gets hurt or fades) seems good if they want to push to the next level in 2020.

Quote from Commie on March 18, 2019, 5:57 pmI dunno, I might do Gore for Kluber straight up. Gore is good to dream on, but Kluber is good now and that's what is needed. AJP gets him and this team has a look as different as the day before and day after Manny.
Side query: anyone got a D Lamet update?

Quote from sportwarrior on March 18, 2019, 6:02 pmWith Kluber we *might* be contenders in 2019, but most likely we'd still be eyeing 2020. That means we're just wasting dollars and prospects on a guy's age 33 season and hoping that his age 34/35 seasons are good enough to anchor our staff for the first 2 years of our 5-6 year window. I just don't see the sense in giving up a guy like Gore with a ton of future potential for the now of Kluber when we aren't yet ready to compete.
