Quote from Commie on March 18, 2019, 6:22 pmYour point is the other side of the debate for sure. I see it completely, but my first reaction to "aren't yet ready to compete" was " because of the SP. "
I would add that Kluber need not be the only SP added. How'd Stroman and Kluber make the rotation look for instance?

Quote from ramrodd on March 19, 2019, 2:22 pmQuote from Commie on March 18, 2019, 5:57 pmI dunno, I might do Gore for Kluber straight up. Gore is good to dream on, but Kluber is good now and that's what is needed. AJP gets him and this team has a look as different as the day before and day after Manny.
Side query: anyone got a D Lamet update?
The Padres are not giving up Gore.

Paddack threw this morning in the prospect game at the complex.

How'd that go? I do know that Dennis Lin said he was working a ton on his curve and that Paddock wished his focus had been better....

If their stance is "we are not giving up Gore" for a talent like Kluber, I question their judgment. They add him and they are a legit, lower odds, post season contender. Fans will flock.

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2019, 7:22 amKluber has not been traded to anyone ... a lot of teams who are clearly contenders need a top flight pitcher ... yet not getting traded ... why, Cleveland's asking price (if they really are interested in moving him) is a lot more than anyone is willing (or capable) of paying. Gore does not cut it unless he is the 3rd player in a deal with some other key components.
Cleveland is the favorite to win the AL Central because of their pitching offsetting a miserable OF ... plus they have an every shrinking window to continue winning with a poor near term minor league support and players going to FA. They will not deal Kluber with the return making the 2019 season (and the next few seasons) better.
Last rumor was the wanted Paddack PLUS PLUS with at least one of those PLUS pieces being a ML OF (not Myers) and another top prospect. Delete Paddack and add Kluber (at 33 with declining profile and at about $17MM) does not get the Padres to the playoffs in 2019 while taking the payroll over $130MM limiting any other moves going forward. If that is Cleveland's stance ... I can see why that does not play well with Preller.
Now I would take Kluber ... but for a lot less with an eye on 2020-21 AFTER we see how Tatis, Urias, Mejia, Reyes, Cordero, and the other SP establish themselves in 2019. Is that feasible? When?
Cleveland and Preller probably have discussed enough options to set an understanding of what could work for both sides. The key trigger ... Cleveland is bad in the first half of 2019 ... with their OF and RP very possible and only one key injury (Ramirez / Lindor / a SP) could send them into a tailspin. IF SD is playing well on the backs of their top prospects actually producing ... could see a renewed discussion in July for a trade deadline move (and certainly next winter). Cleveland's price would likely drop (somewhat) and may be more influenced by dropping his $17MM salary since they are in tight financial straits ... might go with longer term prospects.

Quote from Henry Silvestre on March 20, 2019, 8:02 amI don't think AJP even answers the phone if the lead question is Gorr available?.. Probably not likely he even considers Paddack..Morejon or Espinoza..
I would guess if Clev wants a mlb ready SP..the convo starts with Logan Allen and Q.. If prospects are ok Patino or Baez ..so without knowing (pitching wise) what Clev would want for Kubler or Bauer (I prefer Bauer ven with his yr to yr approach and him being his own agent)... This what I think Clev would be ok with
Renfroe + Baez + Q+ C Allen for either.. They may push back with Logan Allen instead of Q..aQ..and that hurts a bit more.. But our SP is so lefty heavy id be ok with it... Naylor has had a monster spring and may be the piece that we add to get this done as well ..

Quote from fenn68 on March 20, 2019, 9:31 amKeep in mind Cleveland wants (and expects) to be in the playoffs and push for the World Series. IF they put Kluber (5.8 WAR, 3rd in CY Young voting) or Bauer (5.7 WAR, 6th in CY Young voting) they have to get similar ML production back or set up their roster to replace that level of WAR.
Hard pressed to see either Paddack or L.Allen being pieces they would RELY on to make a significant contribution considering neither have pitched in the ML and Paddack is likely on a restricted innings limit. What they would need (want) beyond one of those two is an impact OF they could rely on to deliver the additional WAR ... Padres don't really have that to offer given the short (and inconclusive) histories of Renfroe - Reyes - Cordero (remember Myers contract keeps him out of the discussion).
Indians need ML components to reasonably RELY on making up the WAR difference ... can't see the Padres having that to offer. As I suggested before, Cleveland has to see they will NOT contend and might lessen the demands at the trade deadline just to lower payroll but given the AL Central even that is a long shot.
Better chance the Padres pass on dealing for the pitchers and deal Renfroe to Cleveland for one of their better prospects.

Quote from MrPadre19 on March 20, 2019, 12:51 pmThis would bring up an interesting debate.
If we did trade for prospects....what positions would we target or would it just be the best available despite position?
I ask because as of right now the Major League roster is basically set at 3b,SS,2b,1b,C and corner OF.
Pitching is abundant on the Farm.
We have backup plans on the Farm for most of these positions also.
Basically the only "need" we have right now is a Centerfielder.
I understand you can never have too many arms or top prospects....but we wouldn't have a need for a guy on the cusp of the Major Leagues at any position except CF ,RP,and Starter.
Looking at the Indians in particular I couldn't see us having interest in many of their prospects other than McKenzie(prob not available),Hankins or Oscar Mercado.....who would have to be "part" of a deal for Renfroe along with an arm(s).
In other words....unless we trade for a top CF prospect or a Starter...I just don't see us trading for prospects.
